Should I try to teach myself the violin?
  Hell Yes!!
Wait until high school when they have a strings teacher.
  Ask your concert band teacher.

Yes, well, I have alot of questions, but I have one main one.

Is the violin a hard instrument to play?

The only way I can learn to play one is if I teach myself but, I already know how to read notes because I am a clarinet/base clarinet player. So, I think the biggest problem of teaching myself is done. No one that I know plays it so, I have no help there unless my concert band teacher could help me. But, really, for the most part is it hard?

I'm a music ed major (a horn player) and I just finished my class on learning strings. Violin wasn't too hard to learn, but there are some nuances I would suggest getting a teacher for, such as hand position, vibratos, playing position, and instrument care. I believe your band teacher should know these though - I think a strings class is required for all music educators, unless they got their degree a long time ago. Once you get the positions and instrument care, it should be pretty easy to learn.

it isnt if you have fun with it!!! violin is a lot of fun...i have been playing for 8 years now and i love it...if your gonna teach yourself then make sure you really want to do it because teaching yourself an instrument takes a lot of work and dedication!!!! if you have a friend you does play violin i recommend meeting up with them sometime to make sure your teaching yourself the right techniques!!! and they can also help you out through the tough stuff like positions higher than 5th position (if u get that far)

im a viola/violin player, and i must say, this is one instrument that you need a teacher for. There's a lot of things to worry about like intonation, hand positions, shifting, bowing, and style. Not to mention the normal musical things like rhythm etc.

If you've had piano lessons in the past, it would help some, but I'd still recommend getting a teacher. Believe me, it will be worth it. you don't want to develop bad habits in the beginning.

even if you just have like, a few months of lessons, it will be good. there's a proper way to hold the violin, and if you don't do it correctly, you could end up with tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Um you could give it a try after all I thought myself cello and piano but violin is just something that if one thing is wrong it all is for ex: If your position is horrible than your notes would be horribly out of tune so I wouldn't try it without a little help

-GOOD LUCK! biggrin

Violin is Defitley not a hard instrement to play.
When you first start you might sound like a dead cat... But as you start to progress more your music will get better and better. Don't stress about what you CAN'T do. Always focus on what you can do and don't doubt your self. The vilolin is an awsome instrement to play. HAVE FUN biggrin

It's actually easy to play and to learn. As long as you know the beats, notes and the note position on the strings you're good. There are people who can play by the ear too. They're cool! biggrin

It will be hard in the beginning, but sooner or later, you will get gradually better...

I'd recommend you learning from a teacher or an experienced violinist because if you pick up bad habits, you could d heapsm of damage to your hands, fingers, arms, shoulders, elbows, neck and back. It's a lot of risk to learn without a teacher.

I'm self taught Violin, only after playing Viola with a private teacher for years.
It's not a typically a hard instrument to play, it's just intonation that makes it difficult.
