Missing meteor mystery has scientists baffled
Palu Island Post, 29th April 2009
Last night's meteor shower, one of the most impressive in the last few decades, has sparked a great deal of interest among Palu Island scientists - and a great deal of puzzlement. The largest meteor in the shower, and the only one to survive burning up in the atmosphere and strike the island, has caused a small crater on the north side of Mt. Manu.
But the meteor itself, in a shocking twist to the tale, is nowhere to be found.
"We just don't understand it," said Dr Cerys Llewellyn, a representative from the island's foremost research group this morning. "The meteorite is worthless to anyone who doesn't wish to study it, and would have been too hot to carry off easily. We don't know who's taken it or why, and we don't see where else it could have gone. Meteorites don't make a crater like that and then just vanish."
The researchers have put out a small reward for the return of the meteorite, but they - and others following the story - hold out little hope of its return.
"Anyone who wanted it badly enough to carry it off while it was still hot wouldn't be tempted by pocket change," remarked schoolmistress Meredith Grant, who took her class to the scene of the crater this afternoon. "And it's not as if it's just been overlooked - the scientists combed the place, we combed the place...it's gone, and without a trace save for that hole in the ground."
Bizarrely enough, the bones of several wild dogs were also found in the area. We asked experts if the meteor strike could have killed them, but scientists say no: "The bones were clean," said Dr Llewellyn. "Whatever killed those dogs did so long before the meteor hit."
Miss Grant remains skeptical. "I've been up this way in the last four days and the bones were nowhere to be seen," she explained to us on the way back to the schoolhouse. "I wouldn't be overly surprised if there was a Palui at the heart of this little massacre. They grow and change in ways we still don't understand, and they hold grudges just like humans do. If there were a powerful enough Palui out there, would it kill six predators and strip the bones in a night? Yes. Without a doubt. I live with nine of the little devils, and they'll stop at nothing to protect their own."
The investigation continues.

What This Means For You
The quest to get to the bottom of this will be a five-day event, running from May 9th to May 13th, requiring one RP post each day from each entrant. Those who get to the fifth and final day may have to make further posts depending on how the event plays out. If you cannot commit to spending half an hour on this event every day for five days, don't bother entering. This is for people who can show commitment over an extended period of time as well as showing good writing and RP skills. You cannot just swoop in and win this one - you need to stick around and prove you really want the prize.
And trust me, you do. ^.~
Signups will be from now until 11:59pm on May 8th, that's this coming Friday, in the current timezone for the UK, which is five hours ahead of the EST people, six ahead of the CST people, etc.
To sign up for the event, post the following form in this thread.
Username:
Character Name:
Character Gender:
Can you commit to the posting requirements?

The Character fields should be filled either with the details of a human character you want to play, the details of a Palui you want to play, or the details of a human/Palui pair you want to play. If you don't have an already established human character and don't want to play a Palui (or don't own one to play), now is the time to create one.
You can only enter once - one human, one Palui, or one human-Palui pair. Not two Palui, not two humans. The Palui you enter, if you choose to enter one, will not be automatically changed in any way by this contest - so you can enter based on which character you like to play, not on any attunement plans you may have for them. ^.~ (Thanks to Bouncy_Pineapple for the questions that put this info here!)
And for those of you who are wondering, yes, I do mean human characters. No angels, no demons, no vampires, no werewolves, no fairies, no cat-eared or fox-tailed people, no half-unicorn princesses - none of that. Human or Palui only. I will haz shop canon, people. XD
If you don't own a Palui, you may play as a human - but you may not make up a Palui to play! You may only play a Palui that you own. 3nodding
Here are some examples.
Human Character
Character Name: Meredith Grant
Character Gender: Female
Palui
Character Name: Maximus "Max" Meridius
Character Gender: Male
Human Character with Palui
Character Name: Meredith Grant and "Max"
Character Gender: Female / Male
