(Here's the storyline of Dragonball to Dragonball GT for those who don't know the storyline of the anime)
Goku is basically a strange little boy with a tail who was sent from Vegeta-sai before it exploded. He landed on the Planet Earth. As he did, he was a wild, uncontrollable baby who was programmed to destroy the planet. However, he was adopted by Grandpa Gohan who took care of him as a baby. But one day, Grandpa Gohan was going traveling and accidently dropped Goku into a large carvern, Goku's head hitting a large rock and making him forget everything he knew about his race. He became good, and friendly and pure-hearted.
Goku goes through a series of adventures, first meeting Bulma while looking for his 4-star dragonball which he thought he was his grandpa. He was afraid of the machines and called them monsters.. (Earlier in the series, he had no idea that he accidently killed his own grandpa as an Oozuru, earlier in the series by looking at the full moon.).. Over the adventures, he meets Oblong, and becomes friends with him.
Yamcha is a desert bandit along with his little cat friend and tries to steal Goku and Bulma's dragonballs.. Goku fights him, and wins.. they become friends..
(Bulma starts to like him more)
Goku then meets Chi-Chi, who was trapped up on Fire Mountain that was burning, and she needed help to get her Dad the Ox-King Down.. They couldn't leave.. Goku found the banshi fan and got rid of the flames.
Piliaf, Mai, and Chou keep appearing and tries to ruin Goku's adventures with his friends by stealing thier dragonballs.
During the World Tournament series, Goku completes in the Martial arts tournament and meets Master Roshi, Krillen and Tenshin-han. He makes it all the way until he reachs Jackie Chun (actually Master Roshi in disguise). After Goku loses, Master Roshi agrees to train him.
Master Roshi takes him as a student. Goku becomes students with Krillen.. where he learns the Kamehameha (Turtle School), and they become good friends.
In the Red Ribbon Series, Goku meets The Red Ribbon Army that wants his dragonballs and stops at nothing to get them. This is where He meets Dr. Gero's creation Android 8, and they become good friends.. agreeing to fight the Red Ribbion Army together and they win.
Last but not least, is the Piccolo Series. Here, Gokou is a young adult who has to defend the world from Piccolo. After the famous battle, Piccolo is defeated. Rather than destroying the demon, Gokou spares his life. At the end Piccolo spits out a egg with his son.. (which won't be born until Dbz)
At the end of Dragonball, Goku marries Chi-Chi.. which he promised her earlier to do.. (which he thought it was food).

Dragonball Kai (or Z)
Dragonball Kai is a condensed Version of Dragonball Z, cutting down the number of episodes in the series down to 100.. taking out all the filler episodes to lead to the original fights.. Contains a new theme, called Dragon Soul at the beginning.
Anyways, Dragonball Kai/Z starts out as showing how Goku actually came to earth as a kid, showing Goku's Father Bardock's last moments and throwing his attacks at Frieza, and how Vegeta-sai explodes. (After Dragonball) Goku as a young adult married to Chi-Chi, and they had thier first kid.. Gohan.. (named after his late grandfather). They go to visit for a reunion of old friends. Bulma, Krillen, and Master Roshi are in the house.
Goku brings his son Gohan over to meet everyone. This is where the violence of dbz begins. When Goku is happy to let his son meet everyone.. A large, tell, long haired Saiyan appears and lands on the island only to reveal that he is Goku's older brother. Everybody gasps including Goku who had no idea he had any family besides his grandpa. Raditz reveals that Goku is also a alien from the Planet Vegeta-sai, and he is Saiyan. So Goku is now a earth-raised Saiyan, he says.
Goku doesn't remember anything Raditz mentions, about his mission, clearing off the whole planet to make it for sale for a new race, His Saiyan pride, his race. Raditz is ticked about this, and gasps in horror as he sees his brother's tail missing. He growls as Goku refuses to join him, and kidnaps his own nephew.
Raditz locks Gohan in a pod, and waits to take him off planet. Goku is shocked and horrified that his only brother was evil and hurt both his son and Krillen, and him. Piccolo decides to join up with Goku to defeat Raditz and they go follow him. Raditz is suprised that Goku and Piccolo would follow him.
Goku and Piccolo fight Raditz to find out they are outpowered by Raditz and he has the advantage so far, but things change when Gohan sees his father hurt by Raditz, and rushes into Raditz's chestplate, giving Piccolo a chance to use his trump card: Special Beam Cannon.
Piccolo blasts for the first time, and it cuts through Raditz's shoulder armor, leaving a burn on his arm. Raditz laughs and dares him to try it again. Goku grabs Raditz's tail and he is paralyized. Raditz begs to let him go, and Goku lets go, Raditz sending him to the ground. As Raditz betrays his brother again, Gohan breaks Raditz's chestplate, and Goku grabs Raditz's back and shouts for Piccolo to shoot both of them, and he nods.. Shooting Raditz and Goku with the Special beam cannon, killing both of them.

Ah-ha, but this is not where Z ends. Not by a long shot. What has been described is merely the Saiyan Saga aka Part 1 to the Dragonball Z series.
Part 2 of Dragonball Z is called The Namekian Saga
This part basically shows where King Piccolo, the one that Goku had defeated when 12 years old, was born.
It had not been known up until now that the Nameks were actually good people and not bad. Piccolo was the only "evil" namek per se, that had not changed into "Garlic" or "Garlic Jr's" breed.
You see, just before the saiyan saga started, something that was left out of the series foolishly by the creators of the show, Gohan had, at the age of 3 destroyed 2 evil Namekians adding further emphasis that Gohan is indeed Goku's son, but Gohan had a hidden power.
On Namek, in Part 2, we find out that Frieza needs to be stopped here. Frieza was the one responsible for killing every saiyan save for 4, as the story properly goes. Though, keep in mind, the story focuses on the male saiyans that survived, a sort of... sexist thing for the classic that the show is.
But, also, by leaving out the fact that there may be saiyan women alive... namely Celipa who was away at the time with Sama, and Tora, it emphasized a part of Chinese Culture. Stuff that schools teach.
Yes, Chinese and Japanese Culture both treat women as lowly beings rather than equals. Usually they are not counted when it comes to class separation societies.
Getting back to the saga itself, 4 male saiyans had been alive to this point that was known. Well, 2 actually... Nappa died by Vegeta's hand, and raditz was killed by Piccolo... so...
And it was up to Vegeta and Goku to stop Frieza from destroying any more races. This happens only when Namek is sacrificed, Vegeta is wished to Earth to live in peace (makes you wonder what happened to that Promise that the next time Vegeta came to earth, it was toast), and Krillin gets blown to bits by Frieza.
However, Frieza was not ultimately killed until Part 3.

Part 3 - The Android Saga
Back in Dragon Ball... the Red Ribbon Army, led by a rival scientist to Bulma's father, tried to take over earth by using Androids that were programmed to do the evil scientist's bidding.
Goku had stopped this scientist once as a boy, but because of his heart of forgiveness, this was a second battle that Goku was going to regret not finishing. He did not finish of Frieza, who came to earth early to finish what Frieza started on namek. And he did not finish off the scientist.
A mysterious boy named Trunks (William-Tyler on Gaia people), came to first finish off Frieza so that the Namek Saga could end properly (thank you son of Vegeta... too bad it wasn't the Prince of saiyans himself. Oh well, a descendant of the late King did beat the lizard, so who cares?). Then after warning everyone, including Goku of the Android threat that had wiped out his future world, also warns Goku of an epidemic virus that kills a person.
It sure reminds one of today... that killer flu virus going around... hmph, too bad there isn't someone from the future making the medicine for it. Ha! Well, whatever...
It just goes to show you just how much of a classic and how freakishly parallel to the real world that the Creator of this Program was.
He touched bases on history, the future, and some high school topics without even realizing he had. He even went as far as to doing controversial subjects like male pregnancies and gay relationships. Like the people of today can sooo see it.
He talked about what happens to people when royal orders are not followed no matter what intentions they were. Because Goku was a commoner, he had to destroy earth no matter what. But, because he failed to do so, by the end of GT, Goku was sent to the land of the dead permanently.
In the end, it all goes back to Vegeta being the prince, which no one seems to get. Its there, but no one sees it.
