Timur liked to believe that he had transcended what it meant to be hyena. This was a glorious accomplishment, though it made him lonely sometimes. Yes, a little lonely.
His fur was looking a bit unkempt lately, due to the lack of company. Canine company, anyway. Felines were a different matter. Since cats assumed hyenas normally looked mangy, uncouth, and roguish, he didn’t see the point in trying to impress them. Timur ripped a ribbon of flesh off the carcass and gobbled it down.

She wanted nothing more than somewhere to rest for the day. She had been walking, more like scouring the lands.. for days now.
She had gone off in search of more like her. She had only her family, and her lioness half sister.. She needed more.. She needed more interaction.
So her quest was born, to meet more.
But she really hoped one was a single male who was looking for someone special. She could be that someone special..she had always wanted to be in those fairy tales..
Her little white paws were brown with the dirty sand, and she was going to stop under the shade of a certain tree she had spotted but... Something smelled so good!
She hadnt eaten in days. Without Val, she didn't hunt well Valenera had always been an amazing bird hunter. She was just naturally gifted.
It made her maw drool, and she began to stalk closer. Her nose made her tummy rumble.
She also smelled another canine, and she knew if it was the fighting type, she'd not survive it. She didnt know how to fight. Though she wasnt useless, she was a perfect forager, and she sure knew how to tell a good story!
Or..Or..She could find bugs..Which were more her speed.
"Hello?"

“Hm?” A pair of deep brown eyes attached to a dark grey muzzle popped out of the carcass. Was that… was she… after all this time? His wide eyes darted back and fourth, ears flicking in anticipation, a piece of flesh hanging undignified from one side of his maw. Hyenas did not usually travel alone. The last group he ran into chased him away, but that was months ago. Anyway, he was in no mood to give up his entire meal to a pack of greedy thieves.
Listening to the silence, he gobbled down the fleshy glob, leaned forward, putting one paw in front of the other, and cautiously sniffed the outsider. She carried no scent but her own. He smiled slowly. He was quite handsome underneath that messy mane. “Hello, my young comrade! Eyeyeye, it’s been a while since I saw another hyena! What is your name?”

Esperanza smiled, seeing the grey dappled male and smiling, with a sparkle in her eyes. Could this possibly be the prince from her fairy tales?
She smiled, a little giggle escaping at his laugh.
"Oh my!"
She smiled, all friendly, trying to be easy going. She had heard her kind could be mean and skittsh, and she be damned if she'd get hurt because she was seen as rude.
She'd do the best she could to avoid it.
"Good day to you sir! Truth be told, I have never seen another hyena outside my family, and its a pleasure to see you now."She replied.
"My eyes have been dying for someone like me. My name is Esperanza, or Esper if ya like. Whats your name?"

“Esperanza? What a pretty name! My name is simply Timur.” A female hyena. Timur had not seen one of those in a while. Even in his old clan, males of his rank were forbidden to breed. In those days he resented the females greatly because of their higher status. Now that his restrictions had been lifted, she didn’t seem so bad.
He gestured toward the carcass. “Would you like to share?”

She had not been unallowed to breed. She had been too young. She had never wanted pups, though to be honest, she still did not want them. Not without love.
But she saw pups following soon after love.
Oh howe her mothers tales had done her no good out on her own. She had no idea how this worked!
"Timur? Well that is quite interesting! I like it!"
She blushed a littler, her white cheeks staining pink.
"Oh, hehe, It means Hope."
She said, her own little laugh appearing in there out of nervuseness.
Her eyes brightened.
"Only if you want to share. I havent eaten in a few days."
She replied hnestly, her mouth drooling once more at the sight of the carcass.

“Then it is a fine name indeed, eyeyey.” He nodded, tail wagging as he stepped aside to allow her access to the carcass.
“There is not much left, I’m afraid, but enough for two. Most of the meat is locked between the rib bones and inside the marrow.” He pushed the sturdy ribs with his paw. After testing them, he grabbed a pair of bones between his jaws, and with a few powerful tugs, snapped the ribs from the body. He nosed them toward Esperanza. “We are friends, yes? We should share what we have equally. Do you agree?”

She brightened instantly.
He had said they were friends. Were they friends? She certainly didnt mind having her first Hyena friend. She grinned, her eyes bright and gleaming.
"I like to think we are. I always like making friends."
She replied, grabbing at the bones he tossed to her with her maw, and laying on her belly, bone firmly between her front paws.
She began chewing and ripping meat from bone.
It was tasty, and her hungry belly gurgled in happiness and satisfaction.
"So Timur, why are you out here all alone?"

Timur felt glad. Now Esperanza would stick around and he would finally have real company. Perhaps, he would have much more. As he licked the marrow out of another one of the zebra’s rib bones he thought about how best to answer her question. There was an awful lot he could say about his life.
“Hm. Yes. That is a long story. You see, I had a strange experience once… I believe I encountered one of the gods’ messengers. The monster attacked me because I accidentally trespassed on its land. I didn’t know! I was taken away and held prisoner for many days, I suppose, as punishment for what I had done.
“When I returned to my clan, the matriarch did not believe my story. She accused me of making up rumors to cause panic. Why would I do that? I wanted nothing from her, except for her to believe me. But she refused to listen and demoted me to the lowest rank possible. She wanted to make me an example to others. It wasn’t fair.”

"Thats not fair at all!" She gasped, hearing his story and was saddned by it.
"You do not seem the type who deserves hardship."
She said with a nod, her little blonde mane nodding with her.
Her bright eyes gleamed as she continued gnawing on the meat of the rib bone, which was little, but still there.
She munched away, and looked back up at him.
He was gorgeous, and he was kind.. Or so she thought. She could feel her heartbeat quicken when she looked on him.
He was so goodlooking!
"Ive only ever lived around my parents.. Ive never had much other than that."
She replied, nodding.

“Such a sweet girl, you are,” Timur smiled. “Yes, it was difficult, but I am glad that it happened. My eyes were opened to the injustices of my clan. I finally realized that we should all be equals. I imagined a better world where all hyenas are brothers and sisters and no hyena is suppressed by another. Many others agreed with me. We all fought hard to change the ways of my clan. Some of us sacrificed our lives. It was… difficult… watching my friends being killed for what we believed in, but we all knew that we were fighting for the betterment of our brothers, for a brighter future!”
He stamped his paw on the ground, attempting to make his point clear. On accident, his paw struck a piece of bone and sent it tumbling into the air. He sat up, startling himself. When the bone hit the dirt he wagged his tail nervously and let out a soft laugh. “Sometimes I get carried away talking about it,” he said.

She smiled, her smile happy.
"Oh its okay. You get worked up, thats fine. I get worked up too.. If I believe in teh cause."
She nodded, but looked back at him.
"And you SHOULD believe in your cause.. Because if you dont, who else will..Right?"
She smiled, wagging her own little tail.
Had she found someone of which to be best friends with? Of which..to maybe fall in love with?
Her heart beat wildly, and she giggled.
"Oh, you.." SHe said, pawing at him.

“This is very true. After I was exiled, I could find no one who would support my beliefs. I felt betrayed. But you agree with me, don’t you, my friend?” He scooted closer to her until she could smell his breath. His deep brown eyes seemed to engulf her with their conviction.
“You and I, sharing what we have, this is the way all carnivores should live. I do not dominate you and you do not dominate me. We are equals! In my clan, many hyenas went hungry because those of higher rank, the minority, took more than their fair share. If we were all equals we would all have prospered. We would all live in peace.” He smiled encouragingly. “You are smart, like me. You see the way I do, don’t you?”

Esperanza smiled, nodding exhuberantly.
"Of course I agree! All creatures are created equal.. My sister is a lion."
She said, as if to prove her point.
"I cannot believe you would be exiled. I like what you think, and I like you quite a bit."
She said, nodding and smiling, a blush tainting her cheeks.

Timur wagged his tail, elated to finally discover a fellow hyena who shared his beliefs. And better yet, Esperanza was a female. This meant pups. Pups meant a future clan. The perfect clan; a clan with the right ideals – his ideals. Yes, he could see it coming together so clearly now. His utopia.
“Eyeyeyey, I feel the same about you. And it is good that you have such a strong friend—er, a strong sister! I would love to meet her.”
