The noise of a car revving outside broke the silence of the early morning, the sound barely permeating the glass doors that made up the entrance to Hytech. Outside, the air was a little misty, the rose-colored fingertips of light shining over the tops of the buildings not enough to chase away the fog. Spring was slowly creeping up on the world, the fog, as well as the condensation on the automatic glass doors, attesting to this.

Inside, however, the air was clear and cool, nothing eluding to the change of the seasons. Kaede sat at a keyboard newly placed in the main area of Hytech, his silver blue eyes lingering on the instrument with curiosity and mild trepidation. His guardian, Nata, had given it to him -- an old keyboard from when she use to play, the black surface having recently been dusted off, gleaming slightly in the overhead lighting. The fish-hyte flexed his fingers slowly, running his fingers over the plastic keys. Ok, so it wasn't exactly a baby grand, but it was enough.

The koi had just recently taken an interest in musical instruments, after coming to the realization that he had hands. Most would think that realization odd, but not for a Hyte. Most hytes had some sort of paws or claws -- not very conductive for a pianist. Perhaps being a mer-hyte had it's advantages. Sure he couldn't walk or run or dance, but he could play piano. And that, to him, was enough.

Besides, Melisande needed a pianist. And Kaede thought he'd like to be able to preform at Maxwell's bar.

Tapping the foot pedal with his fin, he slid a strand of his white hair behind an ear-frill, enjoying the sound of the fake-vibration of tiny hammers hitting the strings of a baby grand.

Pink ears wiggled in the morning sun, hands wisfully rubbing together as the female's breath could be seen. While Spring had finally started to arrive, it did seem that Winter still wanted to hold its frosty grasp on the world while it could. The shadow of the female became a bit more prominent as she wandered back to the Headquarters of the place she found more and more often to be a refuge.

For it wasn't that she was hiding but that life had kept things quite busy. Rose had her store to attend to and while Xin Yue wasn't afraid of the animals she kept there, she found herself unattached to the place her mother had helped to found. As the last bits of breath left her mouth and grew into that familiar 'white smoke' her mother had once called it, she stepped into the doorway and very happily accepted the warm air that flowed through the building.

At first, she could only hear the 'click, clack' of her heels against the floor but overtime the mostly silent seconds started to fill with a bit of a melody. The Valentine Rat's ears perked up at the noise and she smiled, following the notes until she reached the inner sanctuary of the building. The music flowed outward from a small piano and a Hyte familiar to her in form and spirit, Kaede. She quietly walked in and sat down to listen, her shoes starting to tap in accordance to the rhythm, fingers swaying to the beats and she closed her eyes and let the music wash over the room.

The fish-hyte was in his own world, fingers moving over the keys slowly as he played Pachelbel's Canon in D, grey eyes slightly out of focused as he did so. Jazz was what he would be playing at HQ, by request of Maxwell, but Kaede found that, for practicing purposes, he preferred classical the most. There was something soothing about it... something peaceful. He liked that about it. So much in life was fast-paced -- he was always watching Nata run from place to place, study for this, take that exam, write that paper, go off to work... watching her made him feel tired. Not that he was not busy also.

The sound of gentle tapping, however, brought him from his reverie, his fingers lifting a few inches off the keyboard as he turned to see who had come in, bluegrey eyes blinking curiously. His expression, first one of surprise, quickly turned to delight as he noticed Xin Yue, smiling pleasantly and, turning on the bench, faced her.

"Miss Xin Yue. I'm sorry, I didn't see you there -- I would have stopped to say hello earlier," He apologized sheepishly, brushing a strand of his hair out of his eyes, "you have good rhythm."

"Well, I was following a pleasant rhythm as well dear Kaede." she replied, smiling as he turned to face her. She walked over and sat down nearby so they could talk a bit better. "Have you been well?" she inquired, starting out with what she could. She always felt that was a rather silly question; one was either well or not well and most people wouldn't just admit that they weren't well.

But, since she hadn't seen Kaede in awhile, it was only natural that she would inquire as to his well being. Plus, it was nice to just sit and talk with another Hyte, instead of listening to the daily grind that Rose seemed to be going through. While it wasn't talk of exams like many of the other Hyte owners, Rose had comings and goings just like the rest of them.

"I do enjoy your playing." she mentioned quietly, musing over the notes he had been playing. It was a sweet set of melodies that played nicely over the quiet Hytech rooms and she smiled as she looked back at him.

Kaede laughed a little, slightly embarrassed at the obvious compliment. Flicking his tail a little, the fish hyte shifted on the bench, moving over enough so that XinYue could sit down if she wanted, lacing his fingers together in a slightly nervous fashion. He was always slightly nervous when around a beautiful girl, and it was hard to match the valentine rat for beauty. Her style of dress also quite appealed to him -- he would never say so out loud, but he was quite fond of oriental styles, and had a soft spot for them. XinYue being the Chinese New Year Rat, which explained, in a very round about sort of way, why he had such an attraction to her, and why he was so nervous.

"I'm suppose to be practicing my Jazz," He replied, gesturing off-handedly towards the small pile of Jazz music sheets he had on the floor next to him, "But I like classical... especially Cannon in D." Smiling up at her, Kaede made a motion for her to sit down next to him. "Any requests, m'lady?"

Xin Yue sat down, as allowed and smiled back at Kaede. She was flattered at the attention she was receiving and tried to show the same to the fish-hyte in return. "I'm not too up to date on different types of music but if you have a favorite song, why not give it a shot? I'd love to hear what type of songs you enjoy as well!"

She straightened her dress as she grinned happily at Kaede. It was so nice to see the different Hytes and their talents, which just reminded her of what she tended to enjoy. She wasn't very sure of what she truly enjoyed, besides being with her Hyte friends but it just brought up that thought again to the New Year Rat and it puzzled her.

Kaede smiled happily when Xin Yue sat down, blushing a little at the attention. He was rather shy around ladies, especially rather feminine ones like Xin Yue or Femi, and even more shy when the ladies weren't obviously dating someone. Which just happened to be the case with his conversationalist right now. Confident and outright beautiful, how could he not be shy? The fish-hyte was only happy that Katsu was not around to witness it. The Kitsune would be more than happy to tease him relentlessly about it.

"To be truthful I'm not either. I'm just learning, and really all I've been doing is jazz and classical. But it's good practice to learn to talk and play at the same time, so you should tell me how you've been doing." Kaede replied, settling his fingers down onto the keys, beginning to play a slower, more soft piece, so that their voices could be heard over the music.

Xin Yue returned his with a smile and a pleasant one at that. She was happy to be around one of her good friends and especially happy to just be able to talk with him about life in general. She also kept a slight blush to herself (if she could manage); being with Kaede made her open up about things that even her best friends couldn't seem to do.

"Well, I've been alright." she started, thinking out-loud to help Kaede with his studies. "I've just been thinking about the future lately, you know?" she mused quietly, speaking thoughtfully. "Some of my dear friends have found love and what they want to do with their lives and...I'd like to do that too. Find love and a career, I mean."

She looked over at him with a small smile and nodded. "Do you know what I mean?" she inquired honestly.

Although he, too, kept it to himself, the fish hyte couldn't help but feel very pleased when he glanced over to see Xin Yue smiling like that. Although he tried to keep everyone equal, and tried very hard to keep on merely friendly terms with all, Kaede was finding it increasingly difficult to do so. The chinese valentine rat was beautiful, there was no doubt about it (although he would often think to himself that ALL the hyte girls were breathtaking), but there was something more about her that really caught his eye. He hated that that meant he might be treating people unequally. Oh, the tortures of trying to be on neutral ground!

And, perhaps equal or even more importantly, what if this ruined his friendship with her?

Flushing a little, the fish Hyte tried to push these things to the back of his mind, listening politely to her speak, and nodding in agreement with a wistful smile. "I know... I'm very happy for them though. Femi seems very happy with Gable," he replied, trailing off a little as well. This would be it... if he was going to do it, he should do it now, right?

Licking his lips, Kaede took in a soft breath, paused, and let his eyes flicker back to Xin Yue, his usually peaceful expression now shy and unsure.

"Well... if you'd like... I would be honored if I could take you to dinner sometime..."

Curse those butterflies in his stomach!

"Yes, she does seem to be very happy with him indeed." The Chinese Rat remarked, her mind wistfully thinking of their time together when words she hadn't heard came out of Kaede's mouth.

Xin froze for a moment and looked back at Kaede with a look of surprise on her face (though she really did try not to show it). Was...he asking her out? Xin pursed her lip before slowly coming to the realization that, Kaede was honestly asking her that question. She nodded slowly, thoughts and mindset coming back to earth.

"The answer...is yes. I would be delighted to have your company at a dinner." she replied, gently putting one of her hands on top of his. Her heart leapt at the idea that someone wanted to possibly pursue something more with her and she smiled back at the fish-Hyte.

She sat closer to him, listening to the music gently as she awaited his reply.

Kaede's heart sank a little as he noticed Xin's look of surprise, although he tried to give her a weak smile. He should have known she wouldn't have been interested. She was... well, she was Xin Yue. She was beautiful and kind and thoughtful and soft spoken and probably had all the hytes, even the female ones, begging to go out with her. And he was a fish... that was probably daunting to a lot of Hytes... perhaps even scary... freakish even...

The koi-hyte was about to tell the chinese rat that it wouldn't offend him if she said no when the girl spoke up, his words caught in his throat before he could utter them. Thinking she had refused, Kaede gave another weak smile, running a hand through his hair nervously and gave what he hoped was a good-natured chuckle, although it probably sounded a little more down that he had hoped.

"It's ok, I should have known better, and you pro-- wait, what... did you say?"

Blinking, his eyes growing wider, he paused. Did she just... accept? The koi glanced down at the rat's hand, placed so gently on his own, and slowly, very slowly, placed his other one on top of hers, his music long since having gone silence.

There were prettier things to pay attention to in the room.

Xin smiled back at Kaede, a smile that seemed quite genuine in her reply. "Silly, I've been wanting to hear those words for ages. I had thought that no one wanted to even have dinner with me. So, it's nice to hear that I'm not some sort of freakish being that bleeds poison or...what people think of these days."

She held her free hand gently on his cheek and turned her body to face his on the piano's bench. "You're so nice Kaede. I'm definately looking forward to having dinner with you, wherever you choose." she mentioned, smiling back at him.

Perhaps well...she had been wrong in her assumptions that she wasn't a wanted Hyte and that she might have a chance with someone after all?

Kaede relaxed visibly at her words, that hand on his cheek causing his smile to widen a little, his eyes to soften. It was such a relief that she did not, in fact, think he was crazy for asking her on a date. He couldn't help but laugh at the "bleeding poison" part, but it was a good-natured laugh, and he turned towards her also, turning over one hand so it was palm up, taking her hand in his and blushing a little.

"I'm glad you're looking forward to it. I mean, I'm sure you get tons of offers... you probably have a boyfriend already. Or girlfriend! You're so sweet and beautiful and thoughtful..." he replied, trailing off a little towards the end, glancing away for a second before turning back, his smile confident. "I feel extremely lucky, you know."
PostPosted: Sat Aug 01, 2009 12:07 am

"Actually, you'd be surprised." she noted, he was blushing too! She blushed a bit as well, a pink tint coming to a woman already well acquainted with the color. "This will be my very first offer for a dinner date." she murmured quietly, though only Kaede and herself were within the room. "Though, you'll have to excuse me if I'm not a bit unsure as to what one does on a dinner date, except for the eating dinner part, of course." she replied, laughing a bit at her unknowningness on the subject matter.

She pursed her lips playfully as she thought on the question of other types of relationships. "Perhaps the many new couples that are of the same um...sex...lead me to believe that there weren't as many other Hytes that would be willing to have dinner dates and similar activities." She blushed, thinking back to a conversation with Lilith on feathered 'rat-babies' when the first Generations were happening. "Not that that's a bad thing of course. It's actually rather telling that Hytes can fall in love in different ways." She stopped short of mentioning that she'd had crushes on a few of these Hytes and looked up at Kaede. "I'm glad for that too but I'm happy that there are still guys out there..."

"Really?"

The Koi blinked in surprise, obviously amazed that she was not flocked with potential lovers. The fact that Xin Yue was a wonderful person was obvious to him, as he was sure it was obvious to everyone else as well. So if everyone else knew it, why didn't they want this amazing lovely to themselves? It confused him to no end, but in the end the fish-hyte dismissed it -- all the better for him, he supposed, although it made him feel selfish thinking it.

Laughing again, Kaede clasped Xin's hand a little tigher, smiling. "Well, I think it would start with dinner, and perhaps end with a nice walk, perhaps in a garden or a park, and end with me taking you home and hoping for a peck on the cheek, if I have done well" he teased a little, although he was entirely serious. He went quiet at the talk of same-sex relationships, thinking back on his own brief experience with hunter. "Well, I don't think you should worry too much about that, Miss Xin Yue. I think there are some who are and some who aren't, and some who are only into themselves. Aka Maxwell..." he winked for effect at this before continuing "But I think that there will always be someone who cares deeply about you, and wants to be with you. Regardless if it's me or some other lucky Hyte, I'm sure you'll find someone wonderful."
