Lutalo was lazing on the flat of a rock, his face twitchign as he tried to mental locate the source of an itch on his side...just behind his shoulder...

He screwed up his nose and after a moment, raised a hind paw to scratch vigorously at that spot. Then, a sigh of relief drew forth as the irritation eased away, letting him roll onto his back, displaying his golden belly to the sun above.

Ah...much better!

He wasn't really feeling up to much today, maybe because the sun was getting hotter and adding to this drowsiness that refused to let up hold. In any case he felt just about ready for a nap and with the densite close by he knew he'd be safe with his family watching over him. Besides, the Pridelands had seemed safe enough and to Lutalo, there really didn't seem anything to worry about.

He stifled a yawn and let his forepaws relax against his chest.

The mighty warrior stalks his adversary! Foolishly the enemy has let down his guard. He has left himself perfectly exposed and his senses are dreary with fatigue. As the mighty warrior draws nearer he can smell the stale breath of his enemy blowing toward him. The mighty warrior pauses, waiting for the moment to be ripe. Then… HE STRIKES!

Vu rocketed out of the grass, tackling Lutalo from the side and sending the two of them rolling across the ground like pebbles tumbling down a steep hill, bouncing head over head. When the dust cleared Vu had landed on top of his brother. He nibbled on his ear affectionately from on top of Lutalo’s tummy, snarled tauntingly and grinned. Time and time again Lutalo had been nibbled by Vu, along with all his other siblings. Today was no different.

“I got you!” Vu said proudly through his teeth. He tugged gently on Lutalo’s ear in the hope that he would fight back or beg for mercy. Begging was preferable. Fighting back would be fun, too. Sooner or later they’d get to the begging part.

Well this was certainly an unexpected turn of events! Lutalo's world suddenly went spinning out of control. Once calm and peaceful it had now been transformed into a dizzy, chaotic whirl of colours. By the time he stopped rolling he was aware of the light-headedness and the weight of someone sprawled across his tummy. Then something tugged on his ear.

He cracked open an eye at the familiar voice.

There he was. Vu. His warrior brother, the one cub who was intent on beating everyone in a fight. Well, Lutalo hadn't really felt up to fighting, but he could feel the urge now and he gave a small, cubbish growl.

"Vu! I ain't no antelope!" And he gave his brother a shove, rolling free and turning to face him. "Lions fight face to face, right? No sneaky stuff." He prepared his 'pounce' posture and his expression turned to onw of mischief. "So, you ready for a proper fight?"

“Only if they’re fighting fair!” Vu quipped, tail in the air. “You’re going to regret challenging me!”

He rushed in for a quick attack, hoping to surprise him with the sudden attack, and swatted at the side of Lutalo’s head with his paw. This was all in fun, but for Vu there was also a serious side to their game. Mother always encouraged her children to rough house and pay attention during their games so that they could learn from experience, rather than just instruction.

"Oh really?" Lutalo jibed. "I don't think so!" His voice took on the air of a sing-song, but there was no time to say much more. Vu was rushing at him and focus had to be on the game now. Unlike Vu, he knew this was something that their mother liked them to do and encouraged. He had a competitive strak, certainly, but that didn't mean he was very good. Even still, good or not, he wouldn't let it ruin his confidence.

He leapt sideways away from Vu's surprise attack and felt the air whoosh past his head as Vu struck out at him. With a playful growl he span, turning to throw himself at his brother, attempting to pin him to the ground.

Vu was neither the largest nor the smallest cub in his family. When he played with his siblings he needed to rely on his quick eyes and fast reflexes. Holding fast to his mother’s teachings, Vu turned and side stepped, their bodies bumping at the shoulders as Lutalo lunged.

Seeing his chance, Vu shoved his weight against his brother’s side in the hopes of throwing him off balance. If he succeeded he would turn and try to pin Lutalo to the ground.

On the other hand, if Lutalo caught his balance Vu would back away and prepare for his next move.

Vu's move was a good one. As Lutalo moved in for the pounce he was moving to fast for him to stop himself. He'd committed himself to the attack and now it seemed that his brother was going to evade. He gave a little cry of surprise as their shoulders made contact, doing well to knock Lutalo aside.

He stumbled a little, one paw losing its footing as he landed. Knowing if he didn't stabilise himself in time, he'd be pinned, he struggled to turn and face his brother, but knowing in his heart he'd be too slow.

He did the best he could in strengthening his posture and closed his eyes in the face of the anticipated attack.

Vu roared in triumph and flung himself at Lutalo. He pushed him off balance, lifting and pushing him onto his back. When he hit the dust Vu grabbed Lutalo by the neck. Vu growled happily, knowing that if this were a real fight that would have been the killing blow. That is, unless Lutalo managed to shove him off.

Lutalo raised his backpaws to press them up against his brother's tummy, wishing he was strong enough to lift the cub this way and shove him sideways. That'd show him! But they were similar in size and probably strength too, so that alone would not be enough.

Maybe if he...

Aware that Vu was at his neck, Lutalo pressed his hind paws firmer against his brother's tummy and did his best to roll himself sideways, attempting to wriggle free of his brother's grip.

Vu shifted with his brother’s weight to block his retaliations. He dug his claws into the earth and kicked at Lutalo’s hind legs to keep him from knocking him off balance and lying on top of him, using his weight to keep him down.

(( *just got back from vacation* they are gorgeous *o* ))

After a strained moment or two, Lutalo cried out angrily and let the tension free from his body. He fell back against the ground and mewled, somewhat irritated.

"Fine, fine, I give up. Just let me go." He glared upwards at his captor, annoyed but already plotting a way to get him back. "Not fair, anyway. The ground where I was standing was bumpier than yours."

He gave Lutalo one last nibble for good measure and hopped off laughing triumphantly. He padded around, tail in the air and chin high.

“You can’t make excuses,” Vu explained, almost taunting his younger brother. “Like mother says: you gotta adjust your balance and stuff.” He spread his chubby legs as if to demonstrate.

"Pah, don't tell me what to do, Vu. I know just as well as you do. But listening is different from doing. You try fighting on uneven ground. Then I bet you won't be laughing so much."

He wrinkled his nose and huffed. "Besides, I've won way more fights than you or anyone. So nerrr~!" He was on his paws and scuffing them through the dirt.

"One day you'll see me in proper fighting mind!"

“Nuh-uh! I’ve won tons more fights than you!” His mind drew a blank. How many real fights had he been in? Of course he counted the sparring sessions with his family as real fights. Just because mother called them ‘practice’ didn’t make them not real. Instead of trying to figure it out, Vu just puffed out his chest and held his tail straight up in the air so that he looked big. He ran circles around Lutalo, crowding him and nudging him boastfully.

“When was the last time you were in a real fight?” Vu taunted. “I bet you can’t remember. I fight all the time!”

Of course Vu didn’t take this game very seriously. As far as he knew all cubs taunted their siblings this way, it was how they played. If you can’t take a jab from your brother, what are you? A big softie! And who likes a big softie? Nobody, that’s who!

"No way! I have! You ask anyone and they'll tell you straight out. Lutalo is better, better, better!" He stomped a paw and tried to crane his head so that he could watch his brother running around him. Everytime a nudge came his way he'd give a little hiss and spit and dig his little claws into the grass.

"Yesterday." Lutalo replied before really thinking how silly it was to lie about something like that. "This stupid boy came by, wanted to pass close to the den. I said no way and showed him a thing or two about messing with me." He puffed out his own chest.

"Yeah, he was bigger than you, Vu. Much bigger! But he didn't have nothing against me. I coulda beat him with my eyes closed!"
