I'm trying to decide what I should march this year. I know I have the first low brass part anyway, I just have to decide. I'm better at trombone then I am at baritone, but I like both. Baritone would be easier, because there's no slide that could hit someone, and it's easier to do eighth note runs and such. But baritone would be harder for me, because at the Christmas Parade, I was tired after we hadn't even started, and it's only a mile long, and by halfway through, I wasn't playing becuase I was in so much pain. Marching on a field an all the flashes and such would be harder, and guiding would be harder, because it's so damn big and heavy.
So what would you choose? Trombone or baritone? (As a side note: not this year, but in later years: what about tuba, too?)

Well, they have aq marching baritone, which is in the form of a trumpet, but plays just like a regular baritone. It feels a little different though and it may be hard to get used to at first, but it's way better than lugging all that giant tubing all over the feild~believe me! ;D

I'd play trombone.
But in my high school they switched all of the trombone players to baritones in marching band after 2005.

Hm... I'm stuck. I'd say Tuba/Sousaphone.
But since it's you... Trombone. I'd just practice 8th note runs. [I know their hard, I have to play them on Tuba. Very fast..]

Personally, I would go with trombone. You say you know that you have the first part, so that being the case, I would still go with trombone.

ok people seriously. the only reason why baritone would be heavy for you is because you are weak (no offense) i am a freshman, so i know what it feels like. but after i began doing 15 push-ups EVERY day, i got use to it. my baritone weighs almost 6 1/2 pounds. our show was 9 minutes and 15 seconds ish long. i've never marched trombone, but even in the jazz band in the jr. high i went to (last year) i had problems with eighth notes. i'd choose baritone. but i would like to march tuba maybe in college

(Btw, this is the OP, diff account.) I just did a whole marching season on trombone. You don't have to be weak to consider baritone heavy during a field show. I take that horribly offensive. the only reason you had trouble with 8th notes on trombone is because you switched from baritone, where you can just push down the valves and tongue, to trombone, where you have to move the slide and tongue at the same time, so there is no break in the sound. (it is much easier to switch from trombone to any other instrument than is to switch to trombone from another instrument.)

I would go baritone. Yeah, it's heavier. But baritone players are sexy! And when you get to college or do corps they'll probably use euphoniums which are even heavier so you should get used to it. Oh and if you're going to switch to tube eventually then you might as well get used to the weight. Not that i've played baritone for 9 years and I march a euphonium in college right now. *totally* not biased.
Might Sound of the South!! The grandest band in all the land. Look us up on youtube.
