I was in Old Testament class, and we were talking about Leviticus and the Law of Moses. He then said that Utah was #14 of the top number of rape cases. It made me sick to my stomach just thinking of that.

Meh, no place is exactly what some people expect it to be. For instance, AZ has one of hte highest dropout rates in the country. Why? Because 1) the schools keep adding on tests, 2) why bother going ot school if you can gamble for high prices? No joke, this is how some people think. I know for a fact that community colleges get alot of money just from GED students in AZ. that's just us. UT also has a high record of wife beatings and prozak. I've heard how much provo alone changed from my parents to my sisters. There's this one hill people avoid at night if they're smart, adn that's right next to BYU campus. This is mostly just what I've heard from others. Talk to those that live there and learn more. in reality, just because we settled there first doesn't make it heaven on earth. it's just another place in the end. I know, pestimistic, but reality sucks.

Every place has its low points and bad areas. Trust me, from going to lacrosse camp at BYU, I know. My bro and I had to ride the train the past 2 years, he's on his mission now, so I'll have to do it alone. Point being, the Provo train station is literally a ghetto. Not a nice area at all by looks. No joke, right across the street from where the train drops you off (its more of a stopping point. There is no station haha) is a building that looks like a crack den. Not even kidding.

You can find anything you want to find anywhere you really want to find it. Opposition in all things, there is much good but there is much that is out there looking to prey on the innocent and unsuspecting. I was told during my freshman orientation at BYU that there was a problem with rapes and near rapes on campus because everyone thought they were now a part of "happy valley" and that no harm could come to them there - that was precisely why it happened - evil knows to look for innocents and preys on those who are unsuspecting and naive. I think of all the BYU graduates that have really made something of their lives and many of the teachers there that have become GA's - so there is also great good there. Just don't tune out inspiration because you are "among the saints" wherever you live!

With that one hill you have talked about, there is more light there, so you don't need to worry as much

I am glad to hear that. It is interesting what people will do in the darkness in secret what they would not do in light and where they could be known!

It made me sick to my stomach just thinking of that. This may sound weird, but is it possible that is a good thing? That it means there is more of a good support and punishment system and so more people are willing to report it? I understand that many go unreported because the victim is ashamed or sure there will be more repurcussions and no help to protect instead if they do report it. Just a thought.

Another thing you might not know Is that we have one of the lowest ranking school systems in the country. We have high meth usage per capita. And we just passed a law that practically bans smoking in any public area.

The world we live in is not the best kind. It is due to those that can't check any issues they have, or addictions that they might have. I think we should just avoid the things that are evil in the world and do good works.

it's why we are lectured to live in the world, but not be of the world. The world will take something sacred and desecrate it. If we allowed the general public into the temple to view it it would probably be the number one place where rapes/bad things happen, just because some people would say it would be epic to do it there.

The biggest reason probably is the prevalance of the Church, which can lead to gullibility or too much trust. It's like a joke I heard: You know you live in Utah if everyone has alarm systems on their houses, but leaves the front door unlocked. I know during the semester, my roommates would always get angry at me for locking the door because it was inconvenient, thinking "We're at a church-run school. No one is going to rob us."
