At first glance, one would question the alcove's usefulness. Post-its of varying sizes and colors, mostly the uniform yellow, but several in all shades of the rainbow, decorate the walls. There is no door to the room, merely a simple arch covered with a large purple Post-it for privacy. The walls next to that opening are themselves pads of the sticky notes, one in bright gold, the other neon pink. The right-hand one is covered with neat handwriting, and half of the top note is missing, made into a makeshift welcome mat that was later converted into scrap paper. It seems to be the fate of most things in the cluttered room.

A bag of cotton balls has been emptied into a secluded corner of the room, and wrapped up with a plain white handkerchief. Another hankie serves as a sheet, though it is more often found on the floor, and the lumpy bed is used to hold books far more than its maker. Next to the bed is a small night table which used to hold a candle, but has since been designated for yet more books. The table's legs are singed, and candles are now banned from the small room.

The rest of the alcove is slightly raised off the floor by a carpet made from a plain white memo pad, though the color is nearly indecipherable from all the markings on it. Bookshelves line this space, though there are as many books stacked haphazardly on the floor as on the shelves. A tall desk has been shoved against the rear wall (underneath the world map), made from a sturdy red matchbox. A pocket flashlight hangs from the ceiling above the desk, and spare batteries are stored in a nearby bookshelf. The desk itself is surprisingly bare, adorned with a few small origami figures, a miniature inkwell, and little else. A chair crafted from another, smaller matchbox is tipped over onto the memo pad rug, leaning on yet another stack of books.

The occupant herself is nowhere to be seen; likely she is in the common room perusing another book. In the meantime, why not take a look around?

A Book of Photos

User Image
The strange lens I was given. It's beautiful, but hard to see through...

User Image
Well... that's easier. How'd it do that? And what does it mean?

User Image
The first thing I saw when looking through the clear lens was this beautiful little... whatever-she-is. An Oculai, by the name of Delphi. (click for larger image)

Delphi and one of her friends, Galen. A gift from the Hearth, which Delphi treasures.

A Shelf for Self

User Image
I have a spare key for the den, as I tend to lose them. This one is hung on a tack above my desk.

If there's one thing that can compliment a good book, it's a good cup of tea. My favorite kind is jasmine, and I keep a tin of it along with my cup and teapot on a shelf next to my bed.

A notebook and pen given to me by the human. The pen is a bit too big, but I'm getting much better at managing it.

And one to grow on...

A frown burrowed deep into Delphi's otherwise pleasant features. The decor of her alcove was yet again causing her problems. While it was perfectly suited to recording observations and theories at the drop of a hat (or a pen), her reluctance to discard any of these notes made for a very cluttered living area. Things were constantly being misplaced, often important things. She had been confined to her Den for a week while searching for her key once, which she thought had prompted her to be more careful.

This time it was the spare bulb for her light. Such a large object shouldn't have been able to hide from her for so long, but it had been three days since the old one stopped working. Three days that she was forced to use sunlight to read. There was plenty of light due to the intricate system of crystals in the Den, but once the sun set she was forced to retire. It was absolutely maddening.

But where could it be? Delphi tossed book after book off her bed, which she rarely used anyway. Nothing. It wasn't under her desk or on any of the shelves or behind the curtains of sticky notes that lined the walls. It certainly wasn't under the floor, or above the ceiling, or in the desk. Which left absolutely nowhere. Which was absolutely impossible. Frustrated to the point of unfiltered anger, the Cloak screeched aloud and tore a paper wall panel from its frame, discarding it limply when she saw what her actions had revealed.

"Oh..." Her breath fogged over the small glass box, further obscuring its contents from view. She hurriedly fumbled with the clasp, making sure to hold the contraption over her bed in case it slipped while she worked it. After a few carefully performed twists the box fell open, spilling its insides to rest among the makeshift pillows on her lumpy bed. There was a pendulum made from a splinter of quartz and some of her own hair, a vial of bright red ink sealed with wax, and several cards that appeared to come from different decks. Their backs were just as unique as their fronts; while each card clearly had a side to be read and one that was solely decoration, all were different. Some had swirls in silver or gold ink, others had sand or cloth glued to them, and one was even trimmed in what seemed to be feathers. They were the most intricately created cards Delphi had ever seen, and she would know. She had created them, as she had everything in that box.

Construction was better left to other orders, she knew. It wasn't even a task she enjoyed much, unless she was making another origami masterpiece to adorn her desk. But she had heard that making ones own tools enhanced their pwer and clarity. It wasn't verified by any means, but the promise of potency was too tempting to resist. The experiment was tricky at any rate, and she had to pause it for different research. The tools themselves had been lost like so many other things, or at least, she thought they had.

The idea had potential. Theoretically, imbuing ones own aura into the reading instruments would further a connection between object and user. Results before had been inconclusive, but she also hadn't been able to devote as much time reviewing them as she would have liked. Eyes alighting with the prospect of a challenge, Delphi plucked a fragment of graphite from the floor and started to write on the torn Post-It that had once been her east wall. Each card of the strange deck was observed and notes taken, as if she had never set eyes on them. It wasn't just the way they looked that was important, some had certain tactile elements, others were scented with special herbs. There was even one that made a noticably different sound when placed on top of another. It was the differences that made the cards so difficult to study. One habit she had picked up was to assign patterns wherever possible. But there were no patterns at all. The only thing the cards had in common was the fact that they were cards, and that they were becoming increasingly difficult to see.

Annoyed, she reached for the tiny flashlight hanging above her desk. Her hand froze halfway there, and after hanging there for a moment it was jerked back, accompanied by what may have been a swear. Again she had allowed herself to be distracted, and it had cost her a night's research. Possibly more. It wasn't just the mess that kept Delphi from accomplishing everything timely, it was her nature to plunge into whatever she was working on and stay focused on it- until something more interesting came along. Schedules wouldn't work; there was no clock in her study, and she had no intention of changing that. Brilliance couldn't be rushed. But if she didn't find the new lightbulb soon, she may never get anything done at all.

The sun had already set too much to continue. If she didn't hurry and settle down for the night, she would be trapped with no way to move without breaking anything. She was forced to get some sleep, which did wonders for her body, but her mind was itching to keep going. Was it really possible to synchronize the two?

Most of the bed's contents were moved to a heap on the night table. As she sank into the lumps, she was still thinking. If the body and mind were separate entities in death, it could be harder to harmonize them in life...

Light or no light, it would take her a while to fall asleep.
