THE STORY OF OCULAI
Long ago there was a race of small sprites with two arms, two legs, and two eyes, not too dissimilar from you and I. Though small and lacking in any spectacular magical ability, this race was very adept and finding the strands of the web that connects all things. With only a little time and a little thought an elder sprite could discern the fate of an entire kingdom, and even the youngest could answer the quandaries of a wandering pilgrim.
This talent proved their undoing, as the desire to control fate made the creatures a prize of man. Lured by traps or taken by force, the fortunetellers were snatched up until only a mere dozen remained free. For the sake of their race, this council begged a boon of the their creator to safeguard them from the eyes and hands of man. The goddess placed her mark upon them and transformed each into a lowly creature that could live under the noses of their hunters and never be seen for what they truly are. And so for generations these 12 lived, loved, bred and died free under the masks of spiders, insects, and other humble animals.
Centuries later, as old gods die and new ones arise, the magic that has kept the descendants of the last free fate spinners cloaked has begun to fade. With each new brood the features of the humanoids they once were show through. They are now trapped between the forms of fae and the forms of fauna. With new faces come new courage, and slowly but surely the oracles are appearing in the corner of our eyes, in the nooks and crannies of our homes and the trees of our gardens.
