January 109

The ground and sky look alike with the snow and clouds, but stepping on the snow and stepping on the clouds are different, Jamie thought of the scenery as she waited and listened for the boomerang's return. Hearing the projectile's faint whir as it neared launch point in the distance, the private turned her gaze away from the butterfly-shaped clouds she was following toward the direction of the oncoming object, hearing its whirring increase in volume, seeing it increase in size as the distance between them diminished, and then catching it with ease. Sound: check, she noted inwardly. Let's watch it all the way again, Jamie decided mentally and released the boomerang again, then focusing on both visually keeping track and listening to it intently, standing steady and composed. She was confident she could come up with an idea to spice things up in the dodge drill..

Where as Jamie had been working on her concept, Rainingwind had been using his time training by hunting a range of creatures up until just before the point of breaking into a run for the target in each of the hunts he took up. Sometimes he wondered if Jamie had a telepathic ability of her own for he seldom informs her of where he heads off to on his own and she seldom inquires both after and before. This was the case today as they weren't working on drills in the training field to change things up every so often and yet, she had managed to station herself close by according to the familiar whirring that met his ears.

Decidedly he halted his activities and headed in the direction of the private, commenting on her status when he met up with her. It's extraordinary how you come up with the things you do with all that seeming jumble in your head, he sat and looked to weigh together the current observations and those in memory regarding the projectile's movement and listened for comparison to past gathered details just as intently as his rider.

Jamie grinned as she caught the projectile and sent it flying again, commenting optimistically in regards to her not having thought something up yet before her features were marked with calm focus on the task once again, "The day's young."

A whirring sound distracted Silversoul from his daydreams as an odd-shaped object flew by. Ears flicking irritably, he was just turning away when the strange thing hit the back of his head with an audible thunk. Furious, he seized the offending boomerang and proceeded to dig a neat, deep hole to bury it in. Nearly five years ago he would almost surely have torn it to bits, but since bonding his temperament had grown significantly milder.

Halfway through his task, he considered the fact that the rude object might belong to a rude person who needed a--

Nice, quiet little talk. Iris bent over to pry the boomerang from an indignant Silversoul'd jaws. Really, try to be nicer. Over four years she'd been teaching him to be polite, but he had his occasional outbursts. Perhaps it was only part of being a wolf. Still, he ought to try harder.

I do! her bonded protested. I've been extra-nice to the ladies, and nearly as nice to everyone else. Just because I thought about maiming doesn't mean I was going to do it. Feeling righteous, he reclaimed his prize and set off in the direction it had come from. Someone might want this back.

Their eyes followed the projectile as it flew off course. It was a bad throw, they observed. The boomerang evidently was going to head back through the trees, so they'd have to be wary for it coming into sight again.

Time passed. It was late.

Didn't you say they're best thrown in clearings? Rainingwind asked for clarification, as usual tone seemingly unconcerned as he sat unchanged despite the development.

Jamie nodded as she replied, her tone held a tinge of worry, "That's right. I was looking for a place where I might not hit a wolf or human. I hope I didn't." But just as she said this something caught their eyes.

At the sight of the boomerang-equipped Silversoul appearing and coming in their direction in the distance, Jamie immediately responded to the sight by taking steady strides toward him to meet him.

Rainingwind didn't encounter Jamie getting into mischief on a regular basis, but went to supervise his rider for her trait of spontaneity as it had become a habit.

"Greetings, Silversoul," she bowed her head politely as she spoke. "I was the one who threw that boomerang," she admitted calmly braced and with a tone steady but without arrogance.

Greetings, Silversoul. What mischief did that projectile cause? Rainingwind queried the fellow Gamma in like calmness with his rider so as he might inform Jamie of the specifics of the damage she dealt according to Silversoul.

Iris glared after her bonded, then after a moment's thought bolted after him. If his old personality quirks were to surface again, she might need to be close. Wait up you peacock!

Silversoul spun and growled. Peacock? Needless to say he was disgruntled. If you weren't bonded to me soul and mind, I would shake you like a wayward puppy. Not that he shook wayward puppies, but still. His wagging tail gave him away, though. He doted on his rider, perhaps more than a wolf properly ought to. But then he remembered the task of his strange wooden object that had so rudely disturbed his peace.

Now if you'll excuse me-- He turned his head away from her and ran a little faster, right into Rainingwind. Mortified at this slip of behavior in front of an older wolf, he gave a respectful nod and an extra backwards tilt to his ears. My apologies, Rainingwind. Really, he'd passed right by Jamie in his distraction, never even considering the possibility of her being the offender.

Both had taken note that Silversoul was likely preoccupied communicating with Iris.

It's alright. My apologies as well, Rainingwind responded to Silversoul's words. He had seen the possibility of a collision and had reacted by only somewhat moving with the hit so as to lessen the collision's resulting impact.

There was a possible explanation that may be linked to this action. Jamie had posed the question of how he'd react if instead of a predicted collision with a centipede, what if it was with another wolf or a human. Since the day she brought it up and had him cunningly trapped him in a side-to-side-mirror situation, she had taken to the trick for a time and played it on him until he'd found a reaction he was to some extent accustomed to for the situation she had challenged him with. It wasn't usual for him to issue a sparring challenge under such a circumstance. Well, as he and his rider were aware, ultimately his reaction really depended on his mood.

Jamie chuckled inwardly at this recollection then approached Iris as well. "Iris, greetings. The boomerang Silversoul carries, what mischief have I caused with this object?" Jamie's tone was polite, it characteristically kept a politeness with all she spoke as well as a steady feel to it she'd attained over the years.

If you are in search of the perpetrator who fired that object, Silversoul, she is my rider who currently addresses yours.

Silversoul swallowed, twice. He'd been expecting to find some young apprentice still green at the ears, but a bonded pair older than him....it wouldn't do well to his Iris-inflicted honor to try revenge on them. Since when did a mature, adult Wolfrider throw things at others' bondeds anyways? But what could he do...

Feeling a bit awkward, he let the incident pass and laid the boomerang at Rainingwind's feet. I believe this belongs to your rider. Really, he wasn't about to show blatant disrespect for his elders just because he was offended. Please do remind her to be considerate of where she throws it.

Iris chuckled at her bonded's rather hapless activity, glad he was for once the awkward one. "Oh, not much, Jamie," happily she remembered the other girl's name, "Only a little bump on the back of his beautiful head that has him in a panic."

I heard that.

Thank you. I shall, Rainingwind replied before taking the projectile in his fangs. Then giving Jamie a nudge with the top of his muzzle, his rider took and returned the object to the sheath at her waist.

Jamie listened intently to Iris' reply. "I'm glad," a dainty, sincere smile came to accompany the expression of those words. "I apologize," Jamie then inclined her upper body, having given a slight bow meant for Silversoul and Iris as her features returned to the calm as a moment before.

He knew quite well how Jamie responded to her faults and that was by further exceeding the effort she placed in work in the consequential period, both in the physical and mental aspect, and it hasn't yet ceased to bewilder him how she'd developed a disposition that rarely displayed an absence of composure. Though, it also isn't apparent to the wolf that he was similar to Jamie in this, an unemotional version as opposed to Jamie's more tender appearance. At such times, one watches over the other so as nothing is overdone. Decidedly thinking a step ahead of her, Rainingwind informed her of what he thought up, I have an assignment in mind for you to tack onto what you'll plan and execute later. I'll brief you then.

((Meep, this'll be a hard one to reply to...Both Rain and Jaime are quite terse...and leave a girl hanging as to whether she ought to just leave...))

An instant of inferiority unnatural to her nature swept through her. She was so clumsy, so childish, this woman so calm and composed, and refined. Then the moment was gone, and she laughed easily, naturally. "There's nothing to apologize for." Really, she was Iris and Jamie Milan was Jamie Milan. And had enough years on her that she had a right to be more mature. "If anything, Silver's been the naughty one and ought to apologize for ignoring you in his fury."

Right Silver?

Said Silver ignored her and sat in the snow, wagging his tail good-naturedly. Rainingwind, would you do me the favor of telling your rider that I apologize? Iris needn't know. He had decided to let Iris think he refused to gratify her, but his sense of honor and respect forbade him from neglecting his duty to apologize.

[OoC: Indeed~ A likeness between them that's been honed with experience, lending to positives and negatives. It does veil their friendliness to an extent. x3]

Likely unbeknown to Iris as she listened intently once again, Jamie admired the younger private's own maturity shown before her, familiar with the fact that mature charm was not strictly defined. Practice from experience lead to her capability of concealing her weaknesses from her bearing, that she continually worked to keep from deterring her from her goals.

Alright, Rainingwind accepted Silversoul's request, neither inclined nor adverse to being the middleman. Silversoul gives you his apologies, Jamie. There was no physical change in him indicating that he had addressed his rider in keeping with the agreement he had made with the fellow Gamma. Between the wolf and rider, it was the wolf whose bearing fluctuated least.

"Likewise, there isn't anything to apologize for," Jamie smiled, gently and cheerfully, as she replied kindly to Iris and Silversoul.

How is training progressing for you and your rider, Silversoul? Simulating conditions akin to opposing centipedes has been a challenge. The last season of battle has had his rider even more consumed by training. Her melancholy for their losses, especially Ylora's passing, remains though not evident in her bearing. Jamie had been considerate to try hard not to have him take on not only his sorrow but hers as well.

You should take a break from your brainstorming. You could head back to the barracks or the Hall, then we'll meet when you're going to resume the training.

Sound advice, Jamie decided a break may help.

"I'm thinking of heading to the Hall for a break. May I ask where are you both headed, Iris, Silversoul? If you are also going to take a break and if you'd like, Iris, may you join me? I would be pleased with the chance to chat with you."

With a wolfish smile, Silversoul dipped his head. I thank you. His shattered sense of dignity was piecing itself back together as he spoke, allowing him to relax and enjoy the company a bit more. And in response to Jamie's words...well, he simply nudged Iris mind a tad. I told you.

As she nodded politely, slightly awkward, Iris gave the slightest of smiles at Silversoul's smug feelings projected her way. Okay, you win. No one had to apologize.

Training is training. He yawned, mischief glimmering in his eyes. Simply too boring, nothing at stake and all... For all his five years, he was a New Eve wolf, daring, reckless, and scornful of death and suffering. Though he'd heard of Moonstride's passing and the tragedy at White Shadow, to hear it was not as educating as a real experience. I would see Spring return, with its freshness and life and the howls of glory and battle. He thought for a moment. And the deaths of those who inflict so much pain on our kind.

Iris caught a drift of his conversation--Silver had a habit of feeding her a constant stream of information as he talked--and frowned. "Silver, really. Honor and glory? Tell me what glory there was in seeing comrades fall last winter, what honor in the festering, poisoned wounds that slowly killed so many others?" Though she was careful not to show her anger in front of their companions, she allowed him to feel it.

Jamie's invitation stopped her short and she covered her mouth, embarrassed. "I'm sorry--you should not have needed to hear that." How had she managed to lose herself like that? "If you'd still like to have me along, I'd enjoy the company." She blushed. "And thank you."

So it would appear that Silversoul, too, allowed his rider some access to information from his conversations with other wolves, Rainingwind observed, his ears flicking from the fellow Gamma to the rider Iris as each spoke along with his gaze. Both you and your rider speak sound words. I agree with you, Silversoul, in that I too prefer the sight of the battleground littered with the slain that dared to attack the Valley as opposed to dead bodies from our side, was his reply, delivery of his words the constant cold and motions of those not expending excess energy as he conducted himself in battle.

Jamie also observed the similarity. Upon being addressed by Iris, she shook her head slightly with gentle firmness, a fire of optimism appreciable in her eyes, “It’s alright really. And, I found what you said to be insightful, Iris.” Honor and glory, the words replayed in Jamie’s mind, able to relate to such feelings and yet also to Iris’ words. “It can be a challenge, not getting carried away by delight in felling a charging centipede when succeeding in impeding one’s invasion and facing the onset of feelings of revenge. I’m glad that we have formed our alliances to protect wolves and humanity through the forts, it would be a much more difficult endeavor to take up without the good fortune of fighting alongside one another as we are now.” She smiled once again, a kind and friendly smile, ”Thank you, too. Let’s enjoy a bit of relaxation together.” She then started to move toward the fort entrance.

They were a ways away from the Hall, being that they were outside fort grounds and Rainingwind decided to take the opportunity to have his obstinate rider catch up on the lack of breaks she’d been depriving herself of before she changed her mind. Get on, Jamie. Before you decide you’d rather just overexert yourself in training, I’ll take you to the Hall, the wolf positioned himself but by no means crouched from his full height.

Okay. And what if I change my mind right now, Jamie teased with a light chuckle as she vaulted onto the wolf’s back.

Then we won’t take the new path, the wolf replied, unmoved.

She drew a small breath in delight as her bright eyes widened slightly, Let’s issue a challenge.

Alright, came in his unchanged tone once again.

Her cheerful smile grew wide as she said to their companions with gracefully kept excitement, her tone and expression amicable yet determined, “Rainingwind and I would like to challenge you to try to catch up and keep up with us on the roofs, Iris, Silversoul.” Her eyes shone with the issued challenge before focusing on the direction they’re headed, “If you think you can do it, give it a try. We’re headed to the Hall now.”

With a dip of his head in agreement to Jamie’s words, he turned his gaze from Iris and Silversoul and took off, running along the fort walls. Upon entering the fort, the wolf made quick work of climbing a tree he’d charged at and from there leapt onto the roof of the barrack beside it. The path was one that allowed for an unhindered run as Rainingwind then leapt onto a different roof, Jamie having kept on his back with little difficulty aided by the harness.
