everybody always gets uptight about wat chair they have but does it really matter? i say no cause a senior in my class was excellent at the trumpet but he always wanted to play 3rd seat

yes it does, to a certain extent... like, for instance, I'm in the second highest band in my school... I'm bout to get last chair, but it doesn't matter, cuz technically, that would make me first chair in the next lower band, right?

It only depends on if someone wants to make it a big deal. I know a trombone player who tries to get last chair so he can play bass trombone.

Also, in things like All State and all, it doesn't matter what chair you get, because in a few years, no one will remember. They'll just remember that you made it.

That kind of thing.

Our band doesn't really even have a chair system, except for the clarinets. In fact, our director even said that just because, say, a trumpet plays 2nd on one song doesn't mean that he won't get 1st on another.

Besides, we NEVER have time for chair tests, so we just go with whatever happens at auditions. People improve over the course of the year, but they're still stuck where they were at the end of marching season.

LOL.

That makes me feel so much better, the stuff about allstate.

I don't think chair order matters, to be truthful. As section leader, I treat all the other people the same way as I would treat an upperclassman -- with respect. It kinda sickens me when people think that because you are a lower chair order, you suck.

In my opinion it depends on which instrument you play and how many parts that instrument can/will have in it's music.
I play bass Clarinet and theres one other girl who plays it too. I know I'm better than her. (Everyone else knows that too) I give her first chair and all that stuff though cause it makes her feel happy. The only reason she got a chair ahead of me in All-region ws because my bass clarinet's key broke a few minutes before and my whole clarinet slid out from under me while I was playing (forgot to take the rubber ball for my peg)
So for my instrument it really doesn't matter. mrgreen

I got 3rd chair once and a girl challenged my twice because she wanted to be in the top three so badly.
The chairing system seemed to matter because depending on your chair, you had to play first, second, or third part. First chair usually gets the solos. But once I had second chair and the girl in first gave me a few of the solo parts.
But with the flutes, the solos were given to whoever could play the part the best instead of first chair.
And my brother is a trumpet player and he always tries to get first chair because he wants a solo.

i dont think it matters, like at my school everyone sits where ever, sometimes a tenor sax is at one end and another is at the other end... for trumpets it does matter, but our teacher just divides 1st 2nd and if there is 3rd trumpet between the three of us. sometimes my friend and i both get first and the other trumpet player gets 2nd. so really it doesnt matter.

To ME, it matters very little. I just try to not get last chair so I can feel good that I don't suck that bad, seeing how I'm new to band.

But really, it doesn't matter. I think what matters is what part you get. 2nd Alto Sax is fun...but whenever I look at my friend's 1st Alto part, I get jealous 'cause they have all the fun melodies.

What matters most is that each part gets covered and generally covered well.

Of course, it's always an ego boost when you move from 8th to 2nd chair and beating 3 upperclassmen while doing it.(I'm going to remember miss ol' second chairs glare for the rest of my life....'Cuz I particularly remember how she glared at me everytime I squeeked in practice.)

I think that people should compete for the first chair of each part and the best players be divided and shuffled inbetween those three parts every semester, yah? That's how I'll run it if I become a band director.

i guess it depends on your ego, i love being first chair and being known as the best ya know, and if being the best means that i have to cover a second or third part on "Christmas Festival" or any other song because somebody on a lesser chair won't practice and learn it then so be it,
things like that guilt them into working harder so as not to be embarrassed in front of the rest of the band

It doesn't really matter to me, as long as you get a fun part. 3nodding But I'm also 1st chair trumpet but the parts are given to who can play it the best, not chair order.

Most of our clarinet section couldn't care less, but the "Elite Four" (me, another
freshman, and 2 8th graders) as my BD likes to call us, get really competitive.
They don't bother dreaming about first chair because they're convinced that I'm gonna get
first every year until I graduate, but they get in arguments when chair test season comes around.

The top 5 or 6 flutes get really competitive, though. Last year, it was 5 freshman girls.
One of them had to give up first chair because the third and fourth chair
girls were harassing her about it, and the third chair girl got first chair even though she
didn't deserve it.

It doesn't really matter anymore to me, since I am the only Tuba [In my middle school. whee ]. But I do care about who I sit next to.. Luckily the people I sit inbetween are kinda nice. [I sit inbetween the Trumpets + Trombones.. confused ]
