Okay, right off the bat I'll say that I just finished playing this game, and am kind of a BioShock maniac right now.
Anybody play this game? It's an excellent FSP with a few steampunky elements in it, though it's more art deco than anything else. But I must say, the Big Daddies are awfully steamy.

I still gotta play this game. From what I've seen it does look like it has steampunk elements. I've heard lots of great reviews for it too.

It's an amazingly fun game. My absolute favorite on Xbox 360 (with Fallout 3 coming second), but I have to warn those not yet familiar with the game that it is more accurately a cross between Dieselpunk and Genepunk, as there is little to no actual steampunk in the game, and nothing Victorian whatsoever as it takes place in the 1950's/1960's within USA territory. Plus the game includes a lot of chronologically accurate things like television (to a certain extent).
But as long as you approach the game with no expectation of pure steampunk stuff, you should be able to appreciate the dieselpunk elements that might cross over into steampunk easily. For example, gasoline powered machine gun turrets. They could just as well be steampowered, but that's being kinda nitpicky, eh?
All in all, pretty much everything in the game is water related and jury-rigged. That definitely satisfied my steampunk tastes.
BTW, I got the limited edition at launch day and I have one of those Big Daddy figurines. He looks great next to my Vault-Tec Vault Boy Bobblehead and my Halo 3 Legendary Edition Spartan Helmet. cool

Fallout 3 is another rather spiffy dieselpunk game, despite it being set in the far future with oodles of nuclear power..
But you get the idea. =D Looking forward to Bioshock 2!

Oh and now comes Bioshock 2. 10 years later and Rapture didn't fall apart as one would expect all thanks to a Little sister returning as the Big Sister and now you get to be one of the great Big Daddy's not just any one but the first.
I reread the article to it twice in my Game Informer. Oh how I wish they had something of a free walk option so that you may explore more of Rapture without the worry of Splicers, other Big Daddies, or the Wrath of the super powered Big Sister.

From the perspective of a non-steampunk gamer: Bioshock was pretty dang good!
I'm a pure cyber-punker and tend to really doubt genre-based games like Bioshock, but I really enjoyed it. I'm a fan of the FPS first(simply because not enough girls play FPS's) and the "adventure game" second, but Bioshock was a winner in both categories. The controls are good, the AI challenging, the difficulty curve about perfect. I can only lament that it didn't take long enough to beat, but that's a small complaint in the face of a high replay value.
Steampunk fan or not; it's definitely worth renting, if not buying.

I bought it the other day. I'm completely in love with it.
The controls are intuitive, the plot is engaging, gameplay is exciting...what's not to love?

I concur with the insufficient length of the game. I played it on Medium difficulty, then Easy while writing a GameFAQs walkthrough for it, then Hard -- including disabling the Vita-Chambers so I truly beat it without dying, though I did a bit of save reloading in the first level. I then proceeded to beat it once more on Hard. At this point, the game is disappointingly easy and short, but it's every bit as fun as it was the day I first started it up. @Feline: I'm glad to see you're enjoying it! I honestly don't know anyone who doesn't like the game, except a few folks who blindly bash any FPS game regardless of quality, and one friend who likes the game but can't play it because it scares him, hehe. EDIT: I was going to move this thread to Arts and Media since it's a video game, but as it isn't a steampunk video game, I'm leaving it here. If anyone objects, PM me and I'll reconsider moving it.

I feel that way with any games that aren't competitive. I don't really like people sitting there watching me while I play a game. *shrug*

Actually, since you play as a Big Daddy, the lone splicer will more than likely leave you alone, it's when you see them in groups that they try anything, and even so, a quick backhand of the drill will teach them whose boss. Hell, in a gameplay demo I saw a lone splicer take off running just form hearing the drill. I know in Bioshock 1 once you got the Big Daddy suit, you got left alone.

And there was something lulzworthy about hearing Papa Loves Mambo during a firefight, andI use the term firefight quite literally XD And on the subject of Bioshock, I was watching Comicon footag,e and I saw soemoen cosplaying the Big Sister.
