Anyone seen this? It's fairly Steampunky, even though it has a sort of Firefly type of feel to it, but I think one of the coolest gadgets in it is the steampunked version of the wicked witch's Crystal Ball. Lots of brass and knobs and levers, as well as some crazy gelatinous goo contained in the chamber that portrays images. If you haven't seen it yet, do so. Very fun stuff.

I saw it. The costumes and the set design was really beautiful but the dialogue and acting was definitely sub-par. The girl who plays Dorothy has the exact same expression throughout the entire thing. Wide eyes, open mouth. This is my excited face: °o° This is my amused face: °o° This is my frightened face: °o°
And you get it. Plus, the scarecrow was a little too fruity for my tastes.
But, yes. It definitely had Steampunk aesthetic. sweatdrop

What I saw of Tin Man I liked well enough, but unfortunately mundane reality had claims on my time when it aired. Speaking of the Wizard of Oz, anybody seen the silent version? Rather different from the later Judy Garland version...for one thing, Toto seems to be a horse! Makes me want to read Baum's books, so I'll know the real story.

Yes I picked up on that Steampunk aspect but I have to agree with Elsebet Anja with the acting especially on the actress for DG. You're lost in a world you've never heard of except for in stories your 'father' told you about and you just look like you're forever going 'Um? What?' she just looked like she just didn't care it seem to bring down the acting of the rest of the cast.
I still want a copy for myself.

Elsebet Anja Plus, the scarecrow was a little too fruity for my tastes. "Oh sure, pick on the zipper-head." (I quote, I jest)
I caught the end of it just after seeing this thread a few days ago. I agree that it couldn't be seen as completely Steamy, but it was still pretty close.
I need to see the whole mini-series.

Did anyone ever see 10th Kingdom? Not sure if you would consider it steampunk at all, but it's worth a look if you like your alternative fantasy. (Snow White Memorial Maximum Security Prison?! xD ) Linky linky.

OOh, thanks for sharing that link, Ezra!
I don't know how I missed this on my radar. It looks REALLY entertaining and has some amazing actors in it.
I'm going to have to watch them all soon. biggrin

I remember watching that a few years ago. I do love seeing and reading retold classic tales. I wish that they would do Wicked on something other than the stage so that they could do more from the book. I'd love to see more of the tik toks and the train.
It sort of makes me wish American McGee or McFarlane get that Oz movie out though dark I know that I'd see more steampunk with them.

I really liked Tin Man. Of course, I was already familiar with Zooey Deschanel and Alan Cumming so I knew what to expect from them as actors, but overall I was very impressed with the quality of the mini-series, especially compared to other "Sci-Fi Original" productions, which are usually uncomfortable to watch. That being said, I also thoroughly enjoy re-invisionings of famous fairy-tale and literary classics. Right now I'm looking forward to the new Alice in Wonderland movie coming out next year, even though it's not steampunk either.

Glitch (The Scarecrow) added comedy. I ADORE the Tin man. It's steampunk. I mean robot parents? that whole scene? Plus the city- Come on... Tin man IS my favorite mini-series. A wonderful show.

I never said it was straight up steampunk but I did say that it has some small steampunk kind of elements.

Yeah, I've heard of it, not really seen the whole thing. When I first saw it I thought 'Oh, well, it's very steampunk. That's coolio. n_n'

it was a nice take on wizard of oz and it was more like a sequel to the wizard of oz than a revamp of it.

It was a good enough movie, I suppose. I admit that it had it's moments. The ending bombed, though.
