Zazu! Zazuuu~” A blue lioness called, her voice ringing through the air as she searched for her avian companion. Her purple eyes pierced the plains with worried looks as she began to think her search was growing useless. Oh where had her little birdie gone? Then all of a sudden she spotted dark blue against the pale sky. A wide smile came to her maw as Zazu was flying back. She trotted forward to the bird who glided down and landed onto her back.

What is it now Subira?” he looked at her, almost with a smug expression.

On the other side of the plain, a brown dog was sniffing around for food. Mealtime was about an hour ago and he still hadn’t eaten yet. His stomach growled threateningly, as if hunger was eating himself inside out. Tai’ruka hung his head, tired and famished until he heard a feminine voice. It was calling someone. ‘Zazu’ it seemed to say. The canine raised his head and scanned the horizon from which the voice had come. There, against the yellowed field, a blue animal stuck out like a sore thumb.

He tweaked his ears curiously and stared. It was a lioness. Joy.

Where have you been? I’ve been worried sick,” Subira turned her head to face Zazu and frowned. He always did go off, but never had he been gone for so long. Her frown then turned into a smile of relief as she exhaled deeply. “Doesn’t matter, you’re here now,” she said. Zazu was probably the only one Subira would ever be outwardly dependent upon. The avian never seemed to mind, he was the paternal figure in her life. Sort of.

I’ve been here and there. No need to worry about me,” Zazu’s smugness still remained. “Hey, y’know, I’ve found us a nice waterhole nearby.” He began flapping his blue wings and hovered around the lioness’ head as she began moving ahead.

And... she was moving this way. Tai wondered if she was hungry – because if she was, well, it might not have been such a good choice to stick around. But what was this? There was a bird. Around her head. And as far as he could see, she didn’t look very threatening. Perhaps joining her would not be such a bad idea.

The wild dog restarted his trot and headed towards the lioness. How desperately he hoped she was in a good mood.

What’s this?” Zazu gently perched atop his companion’s head as a brown dot moved into view.

Subira followed Zazu’s gaze to the brown animal heading their way. She tilted her head out of curiosity, causing her avian to fall sideways.
Subira!” he cried. Oops, sorry,” she chuckled. The wild dog approaching the two didn’t seem harmful at all – in fact, it looked more pitiful than anything else. Subira resented pitying others but that one had it written all over. Pitiful. Pitiful. Pitiful. Zazu narrowed his eyes at the stranger, contemplating whether or not it would be good to interact with the canine.

Let’s avoid him,” he nudged Subira and she started right.

Tai’ruka’s ears perked up as he saw that they were shifting left (from his point of view). Were they really avoiding him? He frowned, brows knitting together in confusion and somewhere deep within him, offense. He raised his head, straightened his body and started left so as to confront the lioness. He wasn’t letting them get away so easy – not that the male had any intention of hurting them or anything. In fact, if the female got angry, he’d probably flee.

Seeing that the canine followed their change in direction, Subira immediately turned left, gaining some speed to see if she could outrun the male. It’s not wooorking,” Zazu commented, gliding beside her head. Yes, I can see that,” the feline replied through gritted teeth. “Is he hunting us?” She began running, her muscles working easily and diligently underneath her soft coat. What was wrong with dogs?

But the wild dog’s speed was no match for them. Tai’ruka easily chased them down, though probably it looked like hunting from the others’ aspect. He was risking so many things at the moment – his meal, a possible friendship, even his life. It wouldn’t hurt to try either way. “Hold up a second please!” he finally called out, trying to get some communication between him and the feline. If she was being reasonable in the least, she’d stop and listen.

The lioness jerked to a halt at her pursuer’s voice and narrowed her purple eyes at him. She didn’t know whether to keep calm or not. Instead, she kept her body rigid as she felt Zazu land upon her back once more. He quickly sidestepped to the back of her neck where he peered out at the other disdainfully. Dogs. How he disliked those canines. Subira watched him come nearer and she turned her body away from the brown animal. “What do you want?” she asked tersely.

P-please, I was just wondering if-if I could join you for the day,” he stopped a couple feet away from her and winced at her cold tone. Tai’ruka chided himself for acting so pitifully in front of the female – but then again, she could do more damage to him than he probably could to her. The male had a right to be scared. “M-my name is Tai’ruka and I’m just a lone traveler in these areas,” he explained.

Finding all of this ridiculous, Tai straightened himself up before the female and puffed out his chest. Maybe, in some strange way, it would change her thoughts about him just slightly.

Instead. Zazu stared at him even more skeptically and Subira laughed. This wild dog definitely meant no harm. She didn’t mean to laugh at him. It wasn’t her first intention but his little display of manliness just broke her composure into bits.

Well I say, Subira. What’s so funny?” Zazu looked at her in surprise, being rocked up and down by her shaking laughter. It didn’t come off as funny to the bird at all. In fact, he scrutinized the male dog and scoffed at the pathetic thing. He ruffled his feathers and clicked his beak in a show of contempt and scorn. Evidently, Zazu did not like this male. Then again, he never seemed to like any of the males that Subira encountered.

Zazu, be nice.”

Tai relaxed immediately after he heard her laughter. He’d gotten through to her and that was all that mattered. The little avian could be ignored. “So anyway,” he cleared his throat, suddenly much more confident than he had been a few minutes ago. “Would you mind if I accompanied you for today? Sounds like you could use a better companion than your little… bird over there,” he tossed his head arrogantly and looked at the infuriated bird with a smug look.

Zazu hmphed loudly and turned away from Tai, mumbling incoherently under his breath.

Subira raised a brow at the smaller male, discomforted by the fact that he had insulted her dear friend. “Uhh, we were actually heading somewhere…” she frantically searched her head for an excuse to leave now. Zazu grinned subtly at the rejected male and tugged on a tuft of Subira’s fur as if to indicate that he was eager to leave. I’m really sorry Tai'ruka,” she smiled sheepishly, in reality not very sorry at all. “But not today, though I’d be happy to accompany you some other time if we meet again.”

Tai’ruka stared after the lioness, completely mystified at the rejection. Where’d he go wrong? Was it something he’d said? Well, there goes another free meal, he thought. Inhaling and exhaling deeply, the brown dog watched the other two leave – apparently on bad terms now with the bird. Then he turned around, returning to his search for food.

His stomach was growling again.
