The land was already into autumn, leaves had turned and sadly some of the grass was dying. But on this day something wondrous happened. She had heard of it, but had never been able to witness it. Snow was something Lux was accustomed to, but she could learn to like it. Usually the only thing that clouds happened to produce was the hard pelting rain, but snow was so much more fun. It floated down from the sky, yes it floated, down to the ground.
It was also a lot slower, which Lux liked a lot more, and it was made of water. That’s what really amazed her. It was water but it floated down, like it was air. Staring up in wonder, Lux’s silver eyes went cross-eyed in watching a couple flakes land on her nose. Her wings looked to be getting whiter, and she ruffled them to get the sticking snow off.
Glancing at the ground she watched as the little water flakes landed on the ground, only to be soaked up. Did that mean it wouldn’t stick, like it was doing to her? It made a frown appear on her face at the thought. How amazing was this snow though? She hoped it snowed like this forever. Never mind the cold and the dead grass, she just liked winter now because of the snow.

Diego was not such a fan of the snow. Oh, it was fun now and then. Knocking snow off a branch onto someone unsuspecting never got old. And making little blizzards by backwinging to a landing in the middle of the herd was worth a laugh or two, as long as there was no ice on the ground and he could get away again. But he didn't think much of the feel of it melting between his feathers and it made his wing joints feel a little stiff when he woke up first thing in the morning. Flying warmed him up, of course, and he'd gone for one of decent length just now. He was warm, he was limber and he was ready to land. No blizzard this time. He landed neatly, stretched his wings to their fullest width for good effect, then folded them tidily against his sides. With any luck, the warmth would keep the snow from sticking to him. He only noticed the mare after he'd gone through that routine, and when he had, he felt a little silly, but done was done. So he straightened up, smiled at her and started to speak. But she was frowning. Er. "...everything all right?"

The voice startled her and she jumped, quickly moving her glance up to the horse. It was a stallion that had spoken to her, and he had the oddest pattern on his coat. It was almost mesmerizing. “Uh, no, nothings wrong at all.” She cleared her throat and gave a small smile. “I was just admiring the snow. And thinking of why it isn’t staying snow once it hits the ground.” At the end of her sentence, her gaze had once again moved to the ground.
It was odd that the snow stayed snow when landing on her, although it did melt a few seconds later, but once it landed on the ground beneath her, it immediately disappeared. It was just one of those mysteries of the world she supposed. Glancing from the corner of her eye she studied this mystery stallion more closely. He had wings, and it explained how he had come from out of no where.
She had to wonder though. Was it difficult to fly during weather like this? Hmm, perhaps she would ask…later.

He had wings all right. So did she, for that matter, and he'd noticed. Stripes on wings. He wasn't sure he'd ever seen markings quite like that before. And the swirl beneath her eye? Now that was definitely something new. He wanted a better look at it. He wasn't going to stick his muzzle in her face, though. That would be odd. And rude. And liable to get him bitten.
"Oh. Well." The truth was that he had not the faintest clue why the snow melted when it touched the ground, but dusted backs and feathers before turning into little runnels of too-cold water. He thought about it anyway, scuffing at the ground a bit with his hoof. "Maybe the ground is thirsty."

She had never thought of that. Was it possible for the ground to be thirsty? Was it even living? Because to be thirsty wouldn’t it have to be living? So many questions were flying through her mind at his words, and it made her want to find out. “I think that is a valid reason. Kind of weird though, that the ground would be thirsty.” The odd thing about snow was that even though the ground seemed to drink it up, it still stuck to her. But Lux figured that it was just the way of life. “So, uh…where did you come from?” She asked, and then immediately felt stupid. That was a stupid question, wasn’t it? She had already concluded he came from the sky, due to the wings, but she was still curious of where he had been coming from…

"Well." She had a point. Thirsty ground was kind of weird. And a little spooky, the more he thought about it. It had made sense to say at the time, but he lifted a hoof now, peering at the earth under it, just in case he'd stepped on a ...mouth. Or something.
"Well," he said again. "It gets dry and dusty in the summer, doesn't it? And when things are hot and dry, I usually get thirsty and I'd drink all the water I could find, if I had a choice. So that's why I thought maybe the ground just wanted a drink."
Which was still weird, but he was sticking by it. He brightened up at her next question. "I was flying. From edge to edge of the lands I've walked over. I like to see it from up high. Have you ever done that?" He gave his wings an excited ruffle.
