I'm sure most of you know the basics of the story of the Yamata no Orochi. Eight-headed snake, eating a maiden yearly, feeding off the daughters of a family... ...Only to end up drunken and slain by Susanoo, the storm god.

Well, this is that story, with quite a few twists to it...

Kushinada is not a woman. Well, yes, there are women involved. But it's eight separate women--a few goddesses, a princess, and some demons.

Izanami, Goddess of Death.

Amaterasu, the Sun.

Tsukuyomi, the Moon.

Benzaiten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods.

Kaguya-hime, Princess of the Moon's Kingdom.

A kyuubi no kitsune.

A nekomata.

And an ookami.

One for each head, to serve as a distraction until the Orochi was drunk, and then to erect a barrier so Susanoo could slay the serpent. However, something went wrong. Preying on the weakness of Izanami--her love for her husband, whom was trapped in Yomi, all because he wanted to rescue his wife--he managed to break the barrier with one head intact, and flee to safety.

After this, a deal was made. The demons would live until the task was complete, the other five reincarnated into human forms with Susanoo.

This is the story of those girls, the story of the Yamata no Orochi's quest to revive his lost heads and once more enslave Japan.

And the hope rests in finding the members of Kushinada, and the items that would awaken them as their true selves, for their human incarnations no longer remember their divine origins...


Twisted Myths:

Izanami and Izanagi: In the true tale of Izanami and Izanagi, it is the woman whom is trapped in Yomi, the Japanese Underworld. For the sake of the story in my Manga idea, Izanami was found by Izanagi, but the residents would not let her go. So, Izanagi served as a distraction, allowing her to escape. As she did, a landslide was triggered, blocking the physical entrance with a boulder, meaning Izanagi couldn't escape. As she wept over the loss of her husband, her tears brought forth three flowers. And from those flowers were born triplets Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi and Susanoo.

Tsukuyomi, the Moon: In the true legends, Tsukuyomi is male. Again, for the sake of story, this has been altered to her being a fairly masculine-acting female. Think Artemis of Greek myth, almost.

Kusanagi and Kushinada-hime: In the legend of the Yamata no Orochi, Kushinada-hime is a real person, whom Susanoo saves--on the condition that she marry him. In my story, she is the name of the group of maidens. Kusanagi is also originally found in the corpse of the Orochi. In my story, it has already been found, and is the item to awaken Susanoo's incarnation.
