Hello. this is my second yr. playing bassoon, and 5 yrs on the saxophone. What I want to know is what is better to play on, a plastic bassoon reed, or a wooded one?

Obviously a wood one, without any question!

My bassoon came with plastic reeds, and I could barely even get a sound out of them.

wood is always best. sure you don't have to worry about plastic reeds as much and they're a good alternative if you're worried about breaking them but wood has a much better sound quality and overall is the better option for people wanting to have a better quality of music when performing. and you should alway practice with what you perform with.

Wood is harder 2 use and doesn't sound as good until you become really good at it but its a lot less of a hassle. Doesn't break and doesn't grow mold (but once its that old you might want 2 throw it out anyway)

Ummm, no.

Wood is far superior to plastic. It's easier to adjust and has better tone quality and flexibility. Also, you do not need to throw out a reed until it's broken. If it gets moldy, soak it overnight in lemon juice which is acidic enough to kill the mold, then soak it in water for a few hours and rinse it off. Then stand it on end and let it dry out completely. Good as new.

Exactly! Never, ever, ever, EVER use plastic reeds! And as afore mentioned, mold can be taken care of. If the lemon juice doesn't remove the mold, a quick sanding or light scraping will take it right off. Also, instead of using lemon juice I've been told that soaking it in hydrogen peroxcide for about ten minutes and then thoroughly rinsing with water works as well.
