I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings if they happen to write fanfiction. I just don't get why anyone would want to. I mean, you'd have to follow some rules, and you'd kinda have boundaries. I don't like that when I'm writing. I prefer to make up my own characters and plots.
And I kinda feel like, it's really disrespectful to the author. A lot of people can't write in the same style and they end up corrupting the characters. If you're going to write fanfiction, at least try to write in the same style of the author, and it takes a pretty darn good writer to do that.
It all strikes me as slightly presumptous. I know if I were an author, I'd get really angry that people were actually trying to replicate my characters. I mean, authors never tell everything about their characters. There's always a secret, and the author is always going to know more about the characters than anyone else. And characters can't be portrayed corrrectly if not everything is known about them.
Anyone else feel this way?

No, I see fanfiction as a creative outlet to display your fantasies or theories. Fanfiction is, to me, practice. It's perfect for writing exercises, beginners, and fun since the characters are already established. With the characters all ready, the writer just has to pick one of the endless possibilities for a plot, then develop from there. I don't think that fanfiction should ever be in the same style of the author (in a book's case) since that just hinders the creativity of the writer. Also, it's so wannabe-ish that it's pathetic. If I wrote a book and fans began to write fanfiction of it, I would feel really flattered since they liked it so much and had their own ideas. It shows that fans aren't mindless and are imaginative. I'd enjoy seeing what other's thought of about my characters. Also, I don't think that fanfiction ends up corrupting characters. It's like actors of a play. Five actors each do the same part, but each one is different in their interpretation. We don't get angry at them just because they interpreted the character differently.

I see your point. However, I don't think that it makes the person creative to use another's characters to the person's plot. Half the challenge and fun of writing is coming up with your own unique characters. They're the first thing I come up with when I write. The plot is written by the characters.
You're right, though. Some budding writers aren't ready to come up with the whole kit and kaboodle. I think it's okay to write fanfiction, but putting it up for others to read...I don't know, it doesn't strike me as right.
And while I think the actors thing is a good analogy, I think the two are two different things. Books give us a world. That rarely happens in plays.
I don't know, the whole thing seems wrong somehow.

True, the actors analogy doesn't pertain well to the whole universe set by the original author, but I was aiming for a character comparison. One of my biggest pet peeves about fanfiction is if the world set by the author is screwed up.
To me, posting fanfiction for others to read is beneficial. Sure, some reviews are just "omg plz post more soon kthxbai", but putting fanfiction out in the vast internet will let others critique the writers work. I love getting a well thought review that shows me where I lacked.

I'm actually a pretty big fan of fanfiction. And as an author, I'd be pleased if someone wanted to try and do things with my story, make their own endings and so on.
