All of the movies that I have whatched and talked to many people that druids are considered evil. I know this to not be true but I was wondering if any body else did.

That is because for centuries Christianity ruled the people and outlawed any threat to their religion..hence, when they took over after the romans fell, all knowledge of the ancient druids etc were made into something evil so no one would dare study them and be like them (the christians would loose a "lamb") and despite what we are discovering about the ancient cultures, the old prejudices and beliefs persist.

I'm a dork...I studied this in high school sweatdrop

Even Merlin though is portrayed as a pet of the church x.x

It is a sad fact.

Reality can be quite a sad thing. It's in our human nature for stereo-types to exist. Which is rather unfortunate....

It depends on what culture you're looking at. While Druids and other "pagans" are often depicted as uncivilized, the same is also true of other religious groups. Take 'The Mists of Avalon'-- ancient religion is glorified, whereas Christianity is depicted as stupid and unenlightened. Cultures with predominately polytheistic or nature-focused beliefs often portray similar fictitious religions as right and true, whereas the monotheistic groups are often led by a tyrant or liar. It really depends on the prejudice of the author of the work.

In truth it all depends on who you are talking to.

Go anywhere near a D&D player... druid is a "good" steriotype.
Say "pagan" around a Christian and then it's all "Do not stand a witch to live"

Unfair? Of course. Turth? Not in the slightest. Anyway.. even when I was little I always saw druids as peaceloving protectors of the forest... especialy in movies...

crying sadly this is true. most of the people who think druids are evil normally don't even look in to it. and as most people now ignorence almost always leads to fear and fear leads to needless hate. like when my mom found out I was wiccan. i tried to explane to her about it but she kept interupting me before i chould get a word out edge wise. saying "I don't won't to know about it." and it's with this willing ignorance that people can't learn to love and respect one another.

I have seen that. i've also noticed that sometimes druids and satanists are confused with one another.

Perhaps this is why so many Christians fear them?

But, if they truly believed in the power of their god, then why would they fear any evil that could come off a human?

I've seen both. I'm not really familiar with druids in movies but there seem to be some books out there which are kinder to druids. I think what might scare people away is the human-sacrifice thing.

Oh, good; I was hoping human sacrifice would show up; the way it's protrayed is a pet peeve of mine.
From all sources I've seen except B-movies; the important thing about a human sacrifice; or any sacrifice, technically, but it's easier to check with humans; is that it needs to be willing. But every time it shows up there's some waif in a white dress screaming to be saved by the hero, and that's not going to do anyone any good.
"Pardon me, I need you to pass a message to someone."
"Okay, where are they?"
"The otherland."
"Mmm, that'll be hard."
"Not if I kill you first."
And if they're pissed off about this, they're not going to pass your message!

having been a druid myself, i have noticed it is easy for people to automacticaly assume that a druid is a dark warlord because they are considered to be in the foremost power with the earth, druids deal with the earth formost but in good, we do cast spells that will destroy the earth, many people think that with that kind of power druids use it for only evil, many give druids bad raps

I have noticed that in certain circles (and also in Hollywood) that they do have a negative connotation in varying degrees. However with the increase in awareness of paganism, more and more people are taking a better look at Druidism and other pagan beliefs and if not agreeing with the teachings, at least acknowledging that Druidism is just as plausible as any other belief system.

The Wicker Man did not help. That movie was a misinformation disaster I think.

Stelmaria2, that is interesting. I personally am fascinated by the lore of the Druids and ancient Celts. Where do your friends get the information from? Ever since the early Roman days there has been a lot of false information spread for the purpose of Christianity. I am surprised that there is much authentic information still left, especially since I thought the druids mainly pased things down orally. I would be very interested in hearling more about that. ^-^

As time goes by...
I think Druids have been stereotyped. I think pagan beliefs and wicca has suffered the most, being classified as "severely evil" in our society. I actually knew a friend who said she was pagan.

@irishcocoa: Yes, I agree. An overruling person or group can often cause prejudices that survive for several generations past.
...the last note of sound lingers.
