I think so. We do just as much work as other sports teams. I dunno about you all, but we do laps and push-ups and we build muscles through endurance. We grow stronger through marching band and develop certain kinds of reflexes and then we compete with rules and trophies and uniforms and all that shiz. We can drop out, we can move up in chairs. We can even consider practices for excersize logs and shiz.

Heck, we deserve way more credit. What do ya'll think?

HECK YES!
My school doesnt even announce that the band has won something.
We've got TONS of trophies but no one knows.
Its always about the football team..or volleyball.

My friends and I had this very same conversation on the way to a competiton. We decided that anything you compete in is a sport. Si, yes. It is.

Yes we should get credit for what we do, and for the most part, what we do requires more concentration than other sports.

~ AGAINST ARGUMENT ~

Marching band is very similar to Drama. Both require a lot of out of class work and practice, along with memorization and dedication. However, in sports such as football, basketball, and volleyball, you can't anticipate or memorize where the ball is going to fall or how your opponents are going to run a their next play. In this sense, marching band shouldn't be a sport due to the fact that you can prepare and memorize the routines ahead of time, without the surprises and unpredictabilities that live sports present.

~ FOR ARGUMENT ~

On the other hand, since marching band requires running laps and lifting weights, it should be considered a sport, mainly because the major way to train for it is to exercise (and of course practice your instruments.. blah, blah, blah), simlar to regular sports. We also can win state titles like all school sports can.

yes it definitely is a sport. you cant just not play in the show. we dont have a bench. it's as our director says" we're all starteers on the varsity team.

yeah and our band doesnt get any credit either. our principal is a retarded football buff who thinks band is a bunch of hoodlums and are only good for playing at football games

I must disagree. Board games are competitions, but not sports.

Totally agree with your first argument. As for your second, it makes sense, but I think along with these elements that define a sport, there is the added element of musical performance which makes band something different. It no longer fits in the category of sport.

But whoa, you have to lift weights for band? xD

Chess is considered a sport.

along with that argument though, how is cheerleading a sport? If that's considered a sport, then why not marching band? They practice and compete with routines just like we the bands do. That's what I don't understand.

Pfft, totally.
Like at my school, when they have a video featuring fall sports, they show cheerleading, but no band.
xD
The ironic thing is, I decided to b**ch about it last year, and as soon as I was done talking *BAM!* there's about 15 seconds of band on the screen.
x3

But yeah, it needs to count as a sport.

I would just also like to point out we move to a specific spot, at a specific time, at a specific speed while playing and keeping our toes up with perfect posture and boxing!

But that's not hard! <- note this here sarcasm.

I think our school is finally getting somewhere. People are beging to take pride in our successful band program. They announce awards and we get exempt from gym just like the football team and other sports

I think it should, I mean, it's physical. plus you get scored for your performance.... I think it should be a sport.

Marching Band should be a sport

we work just as hard as anyone else if not harder

the definition of a sport is :an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition

thats exactely what band is we train hard doing lots of hard physical work over the summer
in the hot sun

while everyone else is in a nice aircondition mall complaning about the heat or how boring there summer vacation is

and most of the time highschools dont even recognize all the hard work the band does.

it really pisses me off all us band geeks should combine together and take over the world
