from LJ
Porcelain are never gonna be gorgeous, prestigious pets -- they're gonna have crappy but mildly cute artwork, really really slow and irregular growths due to my flakiness/slowness/many horrifying papers for school... but, a very detailed background that lends itself to a lot of RP.

Here's my idea for Porcelain 2.0: the [deities/divine forces/laws of time and fate/WHAT COULD IT BE it is an Apologia spoiler maybe] are wreaking havoc on the Porcelain timeline. Reincarnations are transforming into each other, timelines are folding in on themselves, and... ancients falling through portals (like Setsushi did) and landing in Gaia.

Shop attitude:
Laid-back, rules-light, gentle and friendly, but intelligent and intensive RP -- intensive in the sense of detailed (in my case at least, MASSIVELY DETAILED,) but with NO timetable at all, and perhaps even no specific requirements.

I'd like to be the boss, since the Porcelain are my babies and all and I'm touchy as ever about maintaining control over their biology and backstory, etc., however... I would like to share authority and some responsibility with the owners, especially the old owners who've kept contact with me over the years (you guys.) As I would also like to be able to take hiatus whenever I need, I'd give those of you who are interested access to the shop mule and maybe the important files. You guys could thus conduct events, keep each other updated, or whatever, without needing me to be there all the time.

I've been thinking about the method of giving out new Porcelain (as I'd like to be able to add at least a few new players; if someone really likes the concept and wants to play with us, we should let him or her) and I'm thinking that it'd be some sort of... flatsale/RP application. An application to make sure the person is serious about RPing (but not as in SOMBER serious; just someone who is attentive, creative, fun, responsible, etc.) which would then be judged by the other owners. If interest is low (and gods I hope interest is low) anyone whose RP is OK will get one. If interest is too high, we'll have to do a contest instead.

New Porcelain:
An adult Lucid like Setsushi can adjust, but immature Dreaming Porcelain (and some of them even defenseless little children!!) need protection and guidance. In the Empire, the mother or family matriarch raises the children until they are grown and secure in their adult lives, but separated from her, these refugees will need Gaians to look after them and teach them how to live happily and virtuously.

for old customers (you, my beloveds):
1. You guys could have all sorts of options. You can, of course, retain your Gaia Porcelain as they are, with no changes. Perhaps you could request as your free redraw a new tag with new art of your old, chibi-style Gaian Porcelain on it.
2. You could "Apologiaize" them, like Samses did with Boyan & Melo, transforming them into biologically similar to the ancients (but not changing their personality and memories.) You'll get a pretty new tag and art and stuff. [edit sez: They might also revert a few stages back in age, which you could choose to RP including a loss of memory/a reversion to childhood mentality, or just as a physical change with no mental component.]
3. Or, you could get a brand new ancient Porcelain. In some cases, this could be the ancient your Gaian is a re/incarnation of (two incarnations can exist perfectly fine in the same timeline; the universe won't implode.) However, in some cases, the ancient is too powerful/important for me to remove her from the Empire without causing total havoc (and you'd get an overpowered, set-in-stone character, etc. An example would be the Empress -- lifting her out of the Empire would cause mayhem)

I am perfectly happy to surrender these characters to you, because, in terms of correspondence between the Porcelain 2.0 storyline and the Apologia storyline, they were completely divorced at the moment Setsushi entered Gaia. The history is the same; the future is totally vulnerable to your RP.

or, of course:
4. You just get a new, free ancient Porcelain (of whatever age you like, younger makes sense though.) If you like, I can pick one who is related somehow to the ancient of which your Gaian is a reincarnation.

Method of growth:
Ancient Porcelain age just a little faster than real humans. Therefore, I feel like it'd be silly to have them simply grow every couple of weeks, or even every couple of months.

Instead, I think there'll be a loose RP requirement (have to RP a certain age "enough" by the standards of the other owners.) Then, when several owners' Porcelain are ready to grow and I have enough free time to grow them, a portal will be discovered leading back to the Empire (but probably in an alternate timeline, a mythic age, or something else really wacky like that.) If your Porcelain is brave enough, she can venture back into the Empire and spend several years applying the lessons you've taught her. She won't be on her own; before you send her through, you'll establish contact with a caretaker or tutor on the other side.

Your previous RP, your choice of tutor, and chance/whim of the almighty Wenwen will determine what happens to her during this period (of probably about 1-2 RL weeks? Don't want to keep your character out of commission for too long.) During the retreat, I'll send you a list of events that happened in the past few months/year. You'll then write a journal entry building on these prompts, and then I'll send the next year's events, and so on, until your Porcelain is ready and returns to Gaia at the next stage of growth.

Breeding can be done by only one player (though if it is between two players' Porcelain, it requires both's consent.) It will require your Porcelain to either marry an NPC (which would probably entail you receiving this NPC as another character) or another owner's Porcelain. Pregnancy, which is probably around 7.5 months for Porcelain, will probably take place in the Empire in the same way that growing does (though this is problematic for an owner of a male married to a player female buying a pregnancy, as it might require the other owner to RP even though she will not receive the child.) A single child will result, belonging to the owner who paid/arranged for the pregnancy, though s/he could of course be given to someone else, joint-RPed, or whatever the owner likes.

Pricing
I don't want to charge a lot because the art is not great, the service will not be professional and consistent, I don't really want gold, etc. At the same time, if I don't charge a lot, there might be a lot of interest and I won't be able to handle the workload -- I would rather there only be a very few new owners at a time. I also don't want to make them purely gift/breed, because then unpopular newbies will never get a chance to join, even if they might just be shy and turn out to be really fun and interesting.

So, I'm thinking of perhaps charging a relatively small amount for the initial purchase, and then charging a similarly small amount for each growth, in the hopes that owners will RP and request growth slowly. Also, owners who lose interest or only RP halfheartedly might be less likely to ask for a growth if it costs money. A sort of pay-to-play model, allowing you to put a lot of gold and effort in when you feel like it, but not punishing you for taking a break when you feel like that.

I want to keep these amounts small so that it'll be fairly trivial to the regulars.

Your thoughts?
Since I want to give a lot of power to you guys, please do tell me what you think, and if you like the ideas, if you want to be a lieutenant-type with mule-access-in-case-of-emergency.

Oh oh!

If you don't have any new suggestions and you're interested in a Porcelain from the new shop, you can go ahead and tell me which of these 4 options appeals to you the most:

1. Retain your Gaia Porcelain as they are, with no changes. I might make you a new tag with newer, better art (still chibi-style,) but your Porcelain won't be a fully functional 2.0.
2. Your Gaia Porcelain transforms into a biologically ancient Porcelain (perhaps reverting back a few stages of age, perhaps not.) Memories and personality do not have to change, though you could RP it that way if you like. Your transformed Porcelain is your fully functional 2.0.
3. You get a brand new ancient Porcelain:
(a) the original incarnation, of which your Gaian Porcelain is a reincarnation. Assuming that the original is not so crucial to the Empire that removing her from it would cause disaster (ie, the Empress cannot become your pet) hints here
(b) a relative, friend, or associate of the original incarnation
(c) somebody brand-new.
Clarification of option 3 - your old Gaia Porcelain will not be taken from you, retconned or anything like that -- this is a new character whom you can RP alongside your old Porcelain.
4. Something else?

I guess as far as new Porcelain, I'd want a #2 for Jilan and a #3a or, barring that, a #3b for Yixing.

Mrr, going to bed in a few =3= Will definitely check back here in the morning, though.

Asahi Kumoru
#2 for Jilan

What age would you like transformed!Jilan to be?

Asahi Kumoru
a #3a or, barring that, a #3b for Yixing.

#3a might be a little hairy, because Porcelain12 from the timeline of Setsushi is already dead. sweatdrop But I might be able to figure out some time-fu that allows us to bring forward another reincarnation of the same guy...

...orrrr we could go with #3b. He has a 20-year-old son (already Adult) and a 16-year-old daughter (Youth II.) If they're too old, I could have the son be married, and his poor baby is the one who falls through a portal.

Further refined thoughts on the method of growth:

1. When I predict I'll have the time and energy, I'll announce that a retreat is about to occur, and allow a period of time for owners to send in Growth Application Part A (a declaration of the intent to grow, which Porcelain you want to grow, and evidence of the RP you've been doing.)

2. If there's at least one owner who wants to grow, a portal will be discovered leading to the Silver World (more on the worlds later) and Setsushi will investigate. When he returns, he'll report what the setting is like on the other side, and the owners' choice of tutors/guardians for their child's stay on the other side.

3. Owners have a period of time to send in Growth Application Part B (choice of tutor, instructions for the tutor, and what your Porcelain intends to do for the first year of the retreat. And also, very importantly, how much trauma you allow your Porcelain to undergo -- no trauma allowed, all experiences must be neutral or positive? Dramatic events allowed, perhaps changing your Porcelain for the better or worse?)

[owners send growth fee trade at this point?]

4. The growing Porcelain are ICly whisked off to the Silver World. After a short period of time, I'll tell you what happened to them in the first year of the retreat. If several owned Porcelain went over together, the same events may happen to them, they may participate in projects, etc.

5. Owners must write a diary entry from the PoV of the Porcelain explaining his or her reaction to these events. It need not be long or complicated, but should indicate changes in his or her attitude that will effect what events happen to her in the next year.

* this way, the events that happen to your Porcelain are out of your control, but the internal changes that happen to your Porcelain are in your control; you can have them respond to the events however you like.

6. 4 and 5 repeat until the retreat is over. Your Porcelain returns to Gaia, older and wiser (or not) with a new tag.

[trade is accepted at this point?]

Chibi Sorka
for Ichigo ;p probably #3a?

The original character on whom Porcelain3 is based changed a lot over the years... if you pick #3a the result would probably be the 3-year-old (Child I) daughter of Imperial Princess Seian (the Third Princess, an elder sister of Rika.) heart

Stages:

Baby (< 3 years): normally only through breeding.
Child I (3-6 years?) - equivalent to human's 5-8.
Child II (7-9 years?) - human's 9-12.
Youth I (9-12 years?) - "Budding Youth." human's 13-15/16.
Youth II (13-18 years?) - "Blossoming Youth." human's 16/17-22/24.
Adult (18+ years) - human's 23/25+. No more growth, at least until the Grammies and Grampies Expansion Pack comes out.

Common events for stages:

Not at all RP requirements, but culturally expected milestones for Porcelain in the Empire. Would inform what events happen to your Porcelain during growth retreat, what sort of pressures he or she feels, etc.:

Baby:
Not expected to talk, study, or express long-term aspirations; play is encouraged and indulged.
Early childhood mortality was quite common in the early days of the Empire, so babies are given as much happiness as possible, in case their lives might be cut short. Nowadays, magical and medical technologies have advanced, so there's not as high a risk, but small children are still traditionally spoiled.
Child I:
Small children start to be educated (by parents, a tutor, or a local school, depending on the preferences and social station of the parents.) Boys and girls receive similar treatment at this age and learn the same sorts of very basic reading, writing, literature, history, mathematics, and sciences.
The biggest emphasis, though, is on developing social skills, learning to interact with others in a peaceful, polite, and productive way. Parents will try to eliminate bad behavior by the end of this stage, with gentle, respectful, and affectionate methods of "discipline" preferred.
Children may speak a little at this stage -- parents should teach them to pronounce the various syllables and to say their own name, their parents' names, and a few other words, but there isn't a lot of pressure yet.
Child II:
Children sometimes change names at this stage. Babies are often given generic, cute babyhood names, another reflection of historical infant mortality. When a child enters this stage, it's likely she'll live to adulthood, so the parents may now choose a respectable adult name.
Children are encouraged to find their own personalities and interests, which will help the parents plan their child's future. Boys and girls' education begin to diverge, with girls' education given more an emphasis on language and boys given more arts and allowed more time for physical play.
Their vocabulary expands a little, but there still isn't much emphasis on talking yet.
Youth I:
The most stressful phase of childhood, leading up to the coming-of-age Naming Ceremony that takes place sometime in the child's 13th year. The child should come to a firm understanding of his or her own personality, interests, and desires, which will help the officiating priest choose the correct Name for the child.
By the end of this stage, children have to be at least minimally functional members of society, and so are given a thorough education in decorum, morals, and propriety. Parents will push the child to speak aloud as much as possible, as it is at the Naming Ceremony that the child is declared to be Sleeping, Dreaming, or Lucid depending on how he or she answers the verbal questions. This declaration pretty much will determine the child's social station for the rest of his or her life.
Another part of being a member of society is maintaining good relationships, so children are encouraged not to go too overboard on the studies. They should continue to meet new people and maintain their old friendships.
Youth II:
With a Name, Porcelain are considered to be adults. They continue to grow physically and mentally, but are reproductively mature and capable of making many decisions on their own.
As they are still a little inexperienced and immature, though, Porcelain of this age remain in dependent relationships with adults. Some stay in the care of their mothers, while others become apprentices to elders in their desired occupation. Among the Lucid nobility, boys often become squires of older male Knights, while girls become secretaries of diplomats or courtiers. Among the Dreaming Porcelain, children may follow this pattern, but they often have more choice in what occupation they would like to learn.
In the Empire, boys are under a huge pressure to marry during this age, which is supposed to be the height of their beauty and masculine charm. While it is traditionally women who choose their husbands, boys can court girls in an attempt to sway their decision. Lucid boys usually marry women who are a few years older (Adults), while Dreaming Porcelain are more likely to marry within the same age group.
Adult:
At this age, Porcelain no longer physically mature; their bodies are in their basic adult shape and will stay basically the same until old age kicks in.
Adults may continue to learn and build skills, and may stay apprenticed for several more years before becoming professionally independent. Porcelain do not prize "independence" highly, however; children usually maintain close relationships with their family and old masters and tutors, with the members of this network extending support and aid to each other when needed.
Once basically self-sufficient, female Porcelain are expected to marry and have children. Attitudes towards the proper age of first motherhood and the best number of children to have are diverse; it's not always true that more and earlier are preferred.

Porcelain Time and Worlds:

The Porcelain hail from another plane distinct from both Arasias and the universe of Gaia. The home planet of the Porcelain, which we shall call the "Golden World" in reference to the "world of the living" from Imperial mythology, everything progressed peachily up to the year Toutei 720, in which a catastrophic event messed everything up. (If you want to know what that event was, play Moon's Apologia. xd )

It seems that after that event, the movements of the divine forces governing Porcelain and their Name magic were interrupted and forced into a strange circular dance. Porcelain were born who are so similar to ancient from the Golden World that they appear to be reincarnations, though no memories or powers are passed down among them. Furthermore, only Sleeping and minimally Dreaming Porcelain were born, though Lucidity could be accessed through magical accidents and bizarre and dark rituals of human sacrifice.

However, things have begun to change. Varieties of Porcelain from different worlds have been transforming into one another, new Lucid children are being born, and portals are between the worlds they inhabit. There was only one portal leading into the Golden World, which has closed (see Moon's Apologia,) but many are opening from the Golden World to Gaia, sucking hapless ancients through.

In the future, stable, two-way portals to another world may be discovered by Setsushi and your Porcelain. This world is highly reminiscent of the Golden World but somehow different, eerie and odd, and shall be called the "Silver World" in reference to the mythological "world of the spirits." The Porcelain there are much like the ancients in body and custom, but serve the godlike Silver Empress instead of the mortal Porcelain Empress of the Golden World's Empire. The Silver World is peaceful and productive, and Porcelain of Gaia may enter it in order to participate in their society and learn their people's history, values, and customs.

I think Boyue would definitely have to be option #2, just "apologiaize" him the way you did with Melody <3 Though, hopefully not with the losing age thing since he's about to be a daddy. xD

I'll comment on other stuffs later. I'm lame like that.

A Very Brief Overview of Imperial Porcelain Culture:

The very, very, very brief and oversimplified description: A fantasy race and culture, graceful, artistic, and steeped in magic, much like the generic fantasy "elf," but instead of being European woodland creatures, set in a Chinese-inspired bureaucracy.

The bullet points:

• Mainstream political power in a pyramidal bureaucracy.
· Though highly stratified, concerned with community, caring, fairness, and kindness. Abuse of power is not tolerated.
· Concerned with propriety and etiquette, mainly among the higher ranks, with leniency towards commoners.
· Dynamic, not truly hereditary. Members are promoted, exchanged, or retired quite frequently. Empresses are chosen from the high nobility, which includes the Imperial Princesses but also many others. (However, due to the tendency towards endogamy, ranks can become informally hereditary.)
· There are challenges to this system, accomodated by alternate power systems described below.

• Highly matriarchal.
· High political offices are only held by women.
· Women are far more independent than men, who tend to be controlled by their mothers, wives, or even daughters.
· Mothers have responsibility for their children until adulthood (and sometimes even past it.)
· In any relationship between a male and a female, the female is assumed to have more power.
· Men are assumed to be loyal to their wives before they are loyal to their peers, teachers/masters, or even country.
· Among extreme sexists, men are considered to be mostly alike, while females are considered unique and intelligent beings. Thus, men are expendable, and are allowed to die for the benefit of women (common soldiers are almost all males, for example.)
· These norms are accompanied by gender roles that encourage the submissiveness/frivolity of males and the dominance/seriousness of females, and gender stereotypes that depict males as weak-willed, less intelligent, less able to understand and control emotions, less far-sighted, obsessed with marriage. Whether these are "biological" or "cultural" is unclear, though it is true that Lucid males are rarer than Lucid females.
· Although this system highly privileges females, it is never acceptable to directly abuse males, and they are valued for their "masculine" virtues.
· There are frequent challenges to these gender norms, the strongest of which come from the Sorcerers.

• Mostly peaceful.
· Due to the empathic nature of Porcelain, individuals are very reluctant to harm each other and enjoy helping one another. Lucid Porcelain can mute this ability somewhat, but it is a learned skill.
· Among Dreaming and Sleeping Porcelain, conflicts of interest are typically resolved through peaceful compromise. In situations when harm cannot be avoided, a Lucid Porcelain (usually the local judge) tries to resolve things equitably.
· Among Lucid Porcelain there is far more aggressive conflict, but these are usually resolved by debate, negotiation, and social pressure/shaming. Political entities traditionally fight each other by manipulating trade.
· Martial arts were developed for protecting communities against monsters, but there have been intra-Porcelain wars in the past. "Wars" are far tamer than human wars; the numbers involved are never that large, and it usually involves more intimidation than killing. Still, queens who engage in war of any scale tend to be characterized as exceptionally violent and cruel.

• Prizes art and culture.
· After the feeding and caring of her underlings, the aspirations of a monarch are usually to advance the arts and enrich the souls of her people.
· Visual arts, dance, and (written) literature are the highly respected arts; music, spoken literature, and perfume are not as appreciated as they are in human cultures, due to differences in biology.

• Not monumental.
· Diversity is a prominent feature of the culture, as there will always be Porcelain of the 5 different elemental Names. The attitude towards diversity ranges from "resigned acceptance" to "encouragement."
· Lively debate in arts and politics is considered a sign of a healthy society.
· There are many challenges to the pyramidal matriarchal system:
· The Empress directly rules only the main island of Toukoku. The other territories are governed by Queens and other Ladies, who nominally submit to the Empress but may not show much actual respect towards her decrees.
· The priesthood is an alternative system of power existing alongside the Imperial bureaucracy, and allows males to ascend to high rank. Technically, the priesthood has the responsibility of deciding what is moral and right for the Empire, and advises the Empress; however, the Imperial bureaucrats impose various systems to try and limit this power. (for example, the "High Priest" is nominally the highest rank, but it is held by a cloistered male maiden who is prevented from having too much direct influence on politics.)
· The Sorcerers have a completely independent power system. They disrespect the laws of the Empress and the priesthood (and they're all male! scandalous) but they cannot be denied because they hold enormous power as the conduits/shamans of the Chaoses.

• Your Porcelain might not hold these values at all.
· If your Porcelain came to Gaia at a young age, he or she will be influenced more by you than by this culture.
· Although the ancients have to go back to a similar culture to grow, they might not enjoy its values; they could come back disgusted and determined to change things. Or not! It's all up to you.

Oh yeah, I'm a dummy and forgot to ask this outright:

Who wants to be a shop lieutenant?

Your privileges:
• Access to the shop mule for editing the front page/whatever other nefarious purposes. Please don't steal her items or kill her fish.
• Crew status in Guild, for whatever that's good for.
• IF we end up bringing in new players by score-based RP contest, you will definitely have a judging privilege. (If we do things via yay-or-nay voting, all owners can vote, and Tsutsu will be the ultimate judge.)
· uhh... not sure what else. Making up your own events? Dancing around in a provocative fashion?

Your responsibilities:
• Nothing, under normal circumstances, but...
• In the highly likely circumstance I go on a long hiatus or just totally disappear from Gaia, one of you must at least edit the front page to indicate this.
· In the event of a long hiatus, you could also take over the shop and do growths and so forth, but I hope things don't come to this!
