ok, so my roommate and i are in the same ancient civilizations class and we were talking and we realized that xerxes married Esther (in the bible)!

The reason i had never realized this is that in the English Bible's his name is translated as Ahasuerus!! but his historical name is Xerxes.

I found this so hard to believe that this could be the same man. The xerxes i know in history tried to punish the hellespont for being bad...and the one in the Bible seems a little strange and yet kinda cool in a wierd way. The xerxes in history became king of Persia in 486 and was defeated by the Greeks at Salamis in 480 and then at Thermopalye in 479! This is the freakin' lookind guy with all the piercing in 300 and the vegetable in veggie tales!!!

I just find them so different that its hard for me to see them as the same person!!

did you always know they were the same? What did you guys think of xerxes?

Are you sure it's the same Xerxes? They could be pulling a Life of Brian on you.

There does seem to be quite a bit of debate on the subject, though I believe that the most popular identification of Ahasuerus is with Artaxerxes II Mnemon, the King of Persia who lived from about 436 BCE to 358, and was king from 404 onward. He was the son of Darius II and Parysatis, and the brother of Cyrus the Younger, whose ultimately fultile revolt made Xenophon the Athenian able to write his Anabasis.

Unrelated unhelpful side-note: When I was... 9 or so, I played Xerxes in a little skit. I wore a purple bath robe and had a painted on beard.
GO ME.
I forget who Esther was.
