Over the years of playing such a magnificant game I have constantly in my mind fought between two names and which is the true one. I think (if I remember correctly) Aeris is the American name for her and Aerith is the japanese one.

So good people of the Final Fantasy 7 world I would like to know if that is true or not?

If so then I'm sticking with the Japanese one.

Her real name is Aeris. In Kingdom Hearts her name is Aerith. If you think about its the same name biggrin

Square changed it to Aeris for the American release. For for recent releases, the name has gone back to Aerith. For me, It'll always be Aeris. I've been saying it for ten years, and to heck if I'm changing.

I was under the impression that Aeris was the japanese name...I still prefer to call her Aeris, though. However, I refuse to call Sephiroth "Sephiros".

Sephiros? I haven't heard that one. Kinda sounds like a fan girl nick name.

I believe thats what it was in the Japanese version, but it was changed to Sephiroth for the English market.

For me, I'm gonna stick to Aeris. It's less confusing that way.

I like the English change to Aeris because its so close to the words Eris
and Heiress.

Eris is a Greek goddess.

An Heiress is one who is to inherit something of value.

Aeris is a beautiful women with great power who is born with the destiny to Inherit the legacy of the Cetra.

Edit:
*sigh* so later today I took a look into the "Name Origins and Meanings (Possible Spoilers) thread." Found that the points I made where covered in that thread. Here I thought I had something cleaver to say. Oh well...I still like Aeris better.

I think that both are fine. I've gotten used to saying and hearing both that it doesn't really matter to me.

No it wasn't. It was always Sephiroth. How they pronounced it was a different matter. But its actual translation was always Sephiroth.

Okay I think I can help clear this up a little bit, assuming most people here don't speak Japanese.

There is no "th" sound in Japanese, so they use the "s" sound instead since they are similar. So the name Aerith and Aeris are the same written in katakana, as well as Sephiroth and Sephiros.

There are other names that are easily mistranslated, such as Zack, but they did a good job on making those true to their originals. (Zack could have turned out as Zax or something...)

So they're pretty much pronounced the same in Japanese, but in English they can be pronounced two ways, so that's why the spelling changed. (In Japanese they would be pronounced with the "s" sounds though.)

I hope that helped. =)
