Which style do you enjoy writing best?

I've actually been known to write both, and it changes with every story. Usually I can quickly figure out whether first or third fits best with my current stories, but for this one, I've changed it back and forth a lot, and have finally chose and settled permanently on third, for various reasons.

I like first person POV because you can really get into a character's head that way. Plus, I enjoy writing the text of the story as that character's thoughts. The tone of the story seems more personable, and less like narration of a third-party author, if you know what I mean.

I enjoy third person POV as well, because I'm able to paint a wider description for my characters and the world they live it. It's nice.

What are your views on Third and First?

I would have to say that my favourite PoV is first person. It does have that level more of intimacy than third person and is often easier to communicate to a reader because it's almost like having one person talking to another and relating a story.

I have written a few of my novels in third person though, and I won't shy away from it if I think it's what the story needs. My current trilogy, for example, will have the first two books written in third person personal (with more of an emphasis on the main character of each novel; it has their thoughts rather than those of other characters), and the final novel will be in first person, present tense to put this character apart from the others.

I guess you can do a lot with PoV, all sorts of clever stuff, because whichever way you do it you can interact with your audience in a different way. It would seem that first person present tense might be the most personal way to address a reader, but third person omnscient at the other extreme of the scale allows a much wider view of the story as a whole and leads to a more rounded interpretation of the text. It depends entirely what kind of effect you want. =O

I usually find it easy to write in first person (usually just going with first person past tense unless I want to do anything fancy) but with this trilogy I actually stuggled. Originally they were all going to be written in the same way, but then I decided that I wanted them to be more individual; the third character, for example, needs to be set apart from the others because of her role in the story as a whole. I then thought about writing them all differently: third person past, third person present, first person present. But, after a lot of thought it just didn't seem right, so with the second novel I'm writing the bulk of it in third person past, with third person present sections of incomplete narrative (it would make more sense if you read it XD) and diary entries in first person.

XD

Sorry.. I kind of rambled a bit there. But, at least you know how I stand with point of view. >_>

I can write both really well so it just matters on what kind of story it is. My favourite is third person because I can really explain the characters, all of them and go into their minds.

But first person works really well also...so sometimes it's really hard deciding.

I have an affection for third person personal. I think you can get very much into a characters head that way. I also think that it is possible that first person narratives can be limited. *shrug* To each their own, of course. But I really have a thing against second person. It is just too often bad. I've seen it used effectively a few times, but those times do not outweigh the bad. Also, I don't know that I've ever seen a novel written in second person. Are there any?

None that I've seen, unless you count those 'chose your own ending' books, and in that case, K.A. Applegate wrote a few for her Animoph series.

Other than that? Nada.

I like to write third person limited. You can stick to insights from one character, but you can have a narrator with a style removed from whoever's POV you're using, which can be useful for head trips and such.

And I do love headtrips.

I can only seem to write first person if I'm also in present tense. And then, still not very well in either regard #^_^#.

After a childhood of avoiding first person like the plague (I blame Amelia Atwater-Rhodes for this one, *shudder*), I ended up with a vastly insane multiple first person view point that I'm still trying to perfect.

Believe me, you haven't had a hard time until you've written a novel from over seven different character's first person views. It's fun, it's exciting and they better damn well sound different!

This led to a hatred of third for it's coldness and general inability to get into the character's head.

So I did that for a while. Then I started limiting the number of characters, doing some formula/pattern POV writing in the same manner, did some singular first person stories and then tried a co-write, first person, back and forth.

Then I started to break out of my rut and write in third again, but I go for an "Over the shoulder Third," AKA Third person attached/limited. It's a bit less personal than my usual first, but I'm starting to get things out of it I wasn't getting with first.

I don't think I'll ever stick with one or the other, I'll just see where my writing evolves.

I usually just write in third person, unless it is one specific character, then I do first person, because it fits him best.

Third gives me the freedom to go from one character to another, since for at least one story, I have about nine or so major characters involved, then a ton of smaller ones. It is just easier for me to go from character to character this way.

I write both. And I enjoy both xD My current project, SoReNa, is third limited from the MC's POV. But, there are times when I have to switch views (usually when something important happens while my MC is KO'd that I don't want to explain in retrospect or when I don't want to bore the reader with an in-depth explanation of fight sequences) and also because my MC is practically emotionless for the first half of the book.

Amusing to attempt to write from an emotionless first person view. It failed terribly but was still fun.

It also depends on the feel of the story. SoReNa has a legend feel to it. Its old and technically told by the MC in third person looking back millienia later. A friend I Beta for, however, has a retrospect feel to it as well, but it is writen in excellent first person and I have no clue how she could possibly write this particular story in anything but first person. Her MC is so totally clueless that its amazing blaugh

I do plan on doing a first person project in the near future.

I prefer Third Person because it gives me the freedom to do Third Person Multiple, Limited, and Omniscient. I generally use Omniscient and Multiple and rarely ever use Limited.
There have been times I've used First person and I didn't like it much. I kept switching from "I" "We" "Us" to "He/She" "They" "Them"
It was annoying going back to fix seven pages of mistakes involving point of view.

it completely depends on what I feel is best for what I am writing. Third person is great for describing things the people don't see or for describing background details, but first person is good for describing human emotions, pain or happiness, or there personal ideas about certain subjects.

How comfortable do you guys feel switching character POV's in first person versus switching character POV's in Third?

Personally I enjoy witching in third better. For some reason first seem a little TOO personal for the switch up. That, and it seems more limited to me.

Thoughts?

I use both, but I enjoy First more. I like to feel like I am the character. Sometimes, I'll get crazy and forget which pov I'm using(this happens often, but I usually catch it before I get too crazy)!

Occasionally, but only when I'm writing poems or short stories, I'll use second and first. I've never tried just second.

I mostly use third person, but first is awesome as well!

I feel that in third person, you can usually put in more detail without making it sound so out of the ordinary, but that's just me.

I love first person however because it gives you the chance to truly think like you are the character you're writing about. I recently read 'The Lightning Thief' and it's an amazing book (if any of you have read it, you know what I'm talking about) it's written in first person, and the author truly makes you feel like he IS the character, he IS the one telling about what he experienced. However, it's fictional, so it really messes with your mind!

Basically, both points of view are great, it just depends on your story and how YOU feel about it.
