The day was slowing coming to a close as the great ball of fire was setting in the sky. Overhead, shades of blue melted into purple then to red behind the far-off jagged mountains. Tai'ruka lazed underneath a seemingly dead tree, its naked branches hanging low over the relaxed animal.

His day had gone well without a disturbance and he'd aimlessly drifted until he found this little patch of shade. Thankful for the idle time, the white and brown canine had spent the majority of his day resting for the evening. Tai gazed up towards the sky and smiled softly.

Yes. Today had definitely been a nice day.

He only wondered what evening would bring.

Eusi tilted her head to one side more than the other, watching the different shades of the sky twist and turn to either side of the horizon. The colors were simply beautiful. Her favorite had to be the brightest ones, the orange ones that were so far off into the red that it was hard to tell the difference.

The color matched her eyes. The only part about her that she liked.

She gave a little sigh and stretched down onto her belly, giving a little yawn. She was on top of a small hill, facing the sunset. There were sparse trees below her on the soft incline, one of which she could see sheltered a wild dog like herself, only bigger and brown. With a white head. Her head tilted again, this time with curiosity, as she peered down at him.

Now, what could a wild dog be doing out this time of night?

A weak breeze drifted by, carrying with it a scent unfamiliar to the brown dog. His ears tweaked in curiosity and he tilted his head away from the sunset to the source of the scent. On the top of the hill behind him, sat another wild dog. A smaller smoky-hued female with - from what he could see - vibrant orange eyes, as if reflecting the sky at that very moment.

"Well, hello there!" he sat up, a wide grin stretching across his maw.

It would be less awkward to begin a conversation rather than simply gaze at the other. At least, that's how Tai's mind worked.

She didn't really notice the wind brush by her, but she did see the wild dog below turn and look her way. The wind must have gone down there and carried her scent with it. Oh well. Introductions are a necessity. And it wasn't like meeting a new face was a bad thing. Friends were always good to have.

Eusi smiled down at him politely, friendly.

"Hello yourself. Enjoying the view as much as I?"

"Of course, how can one not?"

Tai grinned, tilting his head back towards the rainbow-filled sky. He took a couple more seconds to watch the sun ever so slowly climb down behind the black mountains. Finding it very impolite to leave the little lady, the brown dog turned back to the female, an affable smile forming on his muzzle.

"Now, what's a lady such as yourself doing on her own?"

"This is true," she chuckled. Eusi rose and trotted down the hill to join the stranger and get a nice view from under the tree. "Here, now you can still watch it while talking to me," she teased.

She took a seat next to him and smiled back.
"I'm admiring the view, of course. But when I'm not, I find myself wandering around. I'm looking for an adventure, you see. I don't mind finding friends along the way, of course. But I have no idea what to do with my life." She gave a melancholy sigh and shrugged.

Tai'ruka chuckled as the female joined him. "I'm honored," he bowed his head slightly, taking on a playful tone. He studied her wistful face, suddenly wanting to do anything he could to bring her lively spirit back. She, like him, had no purpose in life, constantly searching for something unknown.

That thought momentarily perplexed him and he pushed it aside.

"You are looking for adventure?" he asked instead. "Adventure like. Exploring? Hunting? Or even perhaps someone such as you would want a different type of adventure? Like joining a pack or raising a family for instance."

Tai had never joined a pack before nor had he ever even thought of raising a family. All these thoughts just came to him. Maybe he was just being tactless.

"To be honest? Anything." She made a face and then chuckled at herself. "When my father died a year or so ago, I had no idea what to do with my life. He raised me well, since I've come to survive so far. But he was my guide, my constant. And now I have no idea what to do with my life.

"I would love to raise a family. I think a pack would be a good environment, and the pups wouldn't be able to run off very far without a member seeing them." Her smile widened. "As I was prone to do, I'm sure my children will have that run-away streak in them as well. But a family...I was the only child of my father, and I yearned for siblings to play with. So yes, definitely a family for me. The only problem is finding a mate. One that'll stick around and help raise the kids." She blew a puff of air upwards and smiled sheepishly once more.

Eusi wasn't quite sure why, exactly, she was spilling her guts and past out to this guy, but she didn't feel bad about it. Or weird.

"What about you?"

"Well, I'm actually looking for a pack to join. Been alone enough I think," he exhaled deeply, thinking of all of his scattered meetings. There hadn't been one other feline or canine he'd met that ever stayed to chat for the entire day, let alone ever meet them again afterward.

Tai'ruka wasn't at all uncomfortable as he listened to the female speak about her life. He was kind of used to it as most of his acquaintances also did the same. His white ears drooped a tad, half expecting this lady to be no different. All of a sudden, pups sounded so much more interesting to him now.

He glanced at her, tilting his head away ever so slightly at an angle, with a skeptical/playful look on his face. "Do you think it would be so terribly hard to find an ideal mate?"

A pack? She had thought about the idea before, but to be honest, she hadn't really thought more about it than just...a fleeting idea.

"I think a pack would be interesting, to say the least," she agreed slowly. "It would give family, and safety, and support, and a group of those who lived in peace...I like that idea." She smiled again.

She outright laughed when he asked about finding an ideal mate, and in a playful way, at that.

"Oh, you have no idea. These days, I'm surprised if I find someone of my own kind, let alone an ideal mate." Eusi wrinkled her nose not unkindly at him. "Why are you still all alone, then? You're an 'ideal mate.' No lady fit your fancy?"

He snorted in an un-gentlemanly fashion at her question. "It's not really that they didn't fit my fancy - more like I didn't fit their's," he chuckled. "But then I have to consider the fact that I wasn't exactly looking for anyone special during that time anyway." Tai thumped his tail on the ground once, twice.

"Anyway, yes a pack would be interesting," he cleared his throat. "Would you care to join me on my quest?"

His tone took on a valiant tone, actually having fun for the first time in a conversation. And then suddenly it clicked. He had no idea what her name even was.

"I'm being rather rude today aren't I?" He frowned. "I'm sorry. My name is Tai'ruka. And the lady I'm accompanying is..?"

She laughed at his snort, but then smiled sympathetically when he told her his problem. "I understand that," she replied. "I've met many males, but can't see myself anything more than just a friend to them. Oh, I've been looking for someone all the time, but perhaps just not as blatantly as I should've." She chuckled, too.

Mm, join him? To the pack? What a quest!

"Why kind sir, how sweet of you to ask me! I'd be more than happy to accompany you on this quest." Ohh, her manners had been forgotten as well! Funny how that always happens when you get sucked into a good conversation. "I'm so sorry; it's so nice to meet you Tai'ruka. I'm Eusi'mbwa, or Eusi for short."

Eusi. Eusi'mbwa. It was a nice name, flowing well through his head. Tai'ruka nodded, beaming. "Tai for short," he added. The canine got up to stretch, watching the gleaming sun finally disappear behind the mountain top. The sky was still a multitude of vibrant colors though he knew that darkness would just replace it sooner or later.

"Well now, lady Eusi, shall we begin?" he butted his forehead against hers. "We've got a long journey ahead of us."
