Remember back when Phantasy Star wasn't an MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role playing game)?

http://www.phantasy-star.net/

Once upon a time, it was basically Sega's version of Final Fantasy... except the setting wasn't different in each game (all but two of the OLD games was set in the Algol Solar System) and it was totally turn-based. The monsters absolutely would NOT attack until actions for all of the characters had been chosen. A nice convenience for strategists.

Lol. I was wondering if anybody else was familiar with the series prior to the Dreamcast. ^^;

Phantasy Star III was one of the very first RPGs I played on a console! heart I was laid up at home with a broken ankle and my husband borrowed it and a Sega from someone he worked with to keep me entertained and off my feet.

I had played some AD&D games on the computer prior to that - but definitely a completely different experience at the time.

I'm a die hard Rpg player now a days. But I didn't learn about RPG's until Super Mario Rpg for the SNES. I have the newest Phantasy Star :Ambitions of the Illuminus. Which isn't so much a massively multiplayer game for me. As it is a Ps2 one player game.

I loved Phantasy Star. I used to play it on my Sega Genesis all the time back in the day. I actually saw a copy of it at a used game store the other day and it brought back memories.

heart I still own PS 1, 2, 3 & 4! whee
Unfortunately, my Genesis died (& therefore also my Master system Converter) so I couldn't play them until I got my hands on the Gameboy Advance conversion of 1, 2 & 3, which is almost exactly the same!
I sure miss being able to play 4, though. I had tons of fun when I got that, and I'd be all "OH WOW! They put THAT in here!! xd " And I loved the vehicles & their music.
My two favorite RPG series are Phantasy Star & the Shining series--I miss playing the original game Shining in the Darkness, which had a great sense of humor as well as being really hard to beat!

The only other RPGs as good as these is the two Lunar Games--Sega CD version, although I did play the revised version of the first game on GBA, and liked how they tied up the loose ends between the games.

The first Phantasy Star was amazingly hard to get through, especially that doggoned temple at Baya Malay with zillions of stairs and levels you have to get through to get to the roof and fly up to fight Lassic!
And then it turns out that wasn't the final battle after all.... biggrin

Remember when you used to be able to call the Sega game line for game hints and help? Did anybody else actually have a helper MAIL them a detailed map of the whole temple in order to get through the thing?

Shining in the Darkness was awesome! Damn I miss that game.
I'd forgotten about it till your post Eirwyn. Now I'm wanting to go find a used Genesis somewhere.

Loved and still love the PS series, well at least 1-4. With that I also have to say shining force, that game was good.
