Mephistopheles had not expected to have kits. He wasn't sure why, exactly, it surprised him that Awai had become pregnant after their one-night tryst. After all, he knew how palui reproduced, and they had performed all the necessary actions to do so. Perhaps it was because he had considered their joining more an example of physical release than emotional attachment. After all, he had never done anything to indicate that he had anything beyond a passing interest in Awai. Certainly he had no feelings for her which would preclude starting a family.
So he paced, his tail lashing back and forth in agitation and his fur giving off sparks. He remembered that there had been sparks while the kits were being conceived and that it had momentarily crossed his mind that Awai could be hurt by them, but he was too newly attuned to know how to control them. He had acquired some measure of control at this point, but he still tended to spark when in states of high emotion. Fortunately, he was not frequently in that sort of a state.
He didn't know why he was still here, with Awai and the kits. Kit. He'd absconded with the female for reasons he didn't care to share almost as soon as she was born. He'd had a feeling was all. The male kit held little interest for him, though Awai kept mentioning how similar they seemed to be. As though that would entice him to stay with her and the kit. He knew he was a relatively intolerable creature, and certainly had no desire to remain with someone of a similar personality.

Awai Tenshi knew what the outcome of what Mephisto and herself did on that one night.. Knowing that she was putting herself at risk of getting pregnant with a male palui that probably has no feelings for her what so ever. But how.. And why did it happen? And why was it him? All the other palui that she met, it just had to be him. Not that they was anything wrong with Meffy. Its just that he wasn't the first palui that Awai would be so willingly to have kits with.
As a little black and neon blue kit slept next to Awai, she stared up at the sky. Thinking about how this all happened so fast with no warning. Not that she wasn't ready to be a mother or anything. However it seemed that Mephisto wasn't as interested as she was about the whole 'parenting' experience. That he wouldn't 'love' or 'care' for the kit like she did. Which made her think that she had to be a mother and a father if Meffy didn't pull his act together.
She sat alone in the still night, the sun was soon to rise. She softly patted her kit's head, just to close her eyes for a moment from not getting a night's rest. Making sure that no one would take her kit away from her while she slept quietly.

From where he perched Mephisto could see Awai and her kit quite easily. A person might say he was keeping watch over his family unit, but that wasn't really the case. In actuality, he just liked to be in high places. That was how he had ended up becoming attuned electrically in the first place. He went up Mt. Ouli in a lightning storm. He hadn't been struck, but a piece of ball lightning had hit very near where he was, and some sparks had flown onto his coat. He hadn't realized that he had changed until later, when he was even more prone to glowing in the dark than he had been before. No doubt Awai was aware of his presence over her head.
He glanced down at the pair. The kit was certainly asleep. He remembered that kits slept a great deal, in his limited experience. He had fathered other kits he assumed over the course of his life, but the mothers had never expected him to stay with them or do anything to provide for the kits. Actually, he was fairly certain he'd made it clear to Awai he had no intention of involving himself with her litter either, but she still seemed to hold some expectations for him with which he was not comfortable.
It had been easier in other cases. He could deny that the kits were his, for instance, or simply vanish, but Awai's territory overlapped his, and although he would be within his rights to demand she left, that was something one simply did not do to a nursing mother. And as for denying the kits...That would be impossible. The one was practically a carbon copy of himself. It had been probable with the others because the kits hadn't taken after him, and most of the females had been with other males.
He doubted Awai was asleep. Likely she would contrive never to sleep again while the kit was still young enough to need protection. Not after he had made off with the other kit. There was no proof, of course, that he had done so, but she probably assumed he had done so, and she would be correct in her assumption.
With a sigh, he leapt lightly from branch to branch down the tree trunk, barely making any noise, though the agitated glow which came off his fur would make him hard to miss anyway. When he reached the ground he planted himself deliberately within Awai's line of sight. She didn't like being snuck up on.
