So whilst on my vacation this past weekend I read the book, The Ruins. Book came before the movie, just so you understand.
My review is as follows, it's a great survival story. You can start to see where a person could crack so quickly, as I was reading it I kept thinking to myself, "wait they have only been here for 27 hours?". The plant doesn't really play a HUGE role in the book, It certainly is an annoyance and does some damage to make things worse but I strongly believe that the theme was survival. And from the previews of the movie- it looks like the movie did NOT stay anywhere close to the book.
The book made me cringe once or twice, and it kept me very interested- I read it in about a day. So I would reccommend it to you, but don't expect a horror novel, that's not what it's about.

The review of the movie I read said that the actors were subpar and the movie failed to capture the creepiness of the book. I'm just interested in how a book about killer vines can actually be taken seriously--I mean, is the writing really good enough to eclipse the silly concept?

That's the thing it wasn't killer vines. They weren't evil, horror, hell-bent vegetaion in the book. It was more of a sinister prescense.
Spoiler:
The plant ate fluid- blood/vomit and dead cells. Like Pablo's legs, he got paralized and the next morning they woke up to find the plant and devoured all the flesh, fat, muscles, and tendons was stripped from his legs. Then when Eric recieved a cut on his knee's the plant pushed it's way into his leg.
It's not so much man eating like "Rawr, I eat you now!" But a slow more methodical way of watching thme suffer and playing on their weaknesses.
