Welcome, dear member! My name is Margem and I can see that you are new to the guild. You're wondering what to do around here, I bet. Actually, you look as if you are totally lost about everything in the guild. Here's a few Q&A for you (Questions and Answers).

Let me lay down a list for you here before I get into the whole 'bla bla bla' thing.

1. What is a guild? What is a guild home?
2. What is a forum or a subforum?
3. What are threads? What are the differences between threads in Alacrity?
4. What is a Captain? What is a Vice Captain? What is a Crew member? What is a non-crew member? What are the roles of all of these positions? How do I get a higher position in the guild?
5. What is roleplaying?

I will be answering these questions, and others, as they come up. Please be patient with me!
Thanks!
~Margem

WHAT IS A GUILD?

According to Merriam-Webster, a guild is defined as "an association of people with similar interests or pursuits". Here at Alacrity, we are a guild that are interested in roleplaying, however, there are other interests that we allow to 'live' here.

WHAT IS A GUILD HOME?
Our "guild home" is where we show others (who are not in the guild) what we're about. This is ours: Alacrity Guild Home.

You want to add stuff to make our guild look nicer, whether by advertising or coloring the guild home? Go ahead and send a note to Margem, or post a post in the thread "Improvements".

WHAT IS A FORUM?

According to Merriam-Webster, a forum, for the sake of this guild, is defined as "a public meeting or lecture involving audience discussion". Here at Alacrity, we have one forum - "Welcome to Alacrity! REQUIRED!!! (And random chats....)". This is where we do our basic 'introduction' and rules threads.

But what are the other weird blue underlined phrases at the top of the page? Those are subforums. (Scroll down a bit.)

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/forum

WHAT IS A SUBFORUM?
Subforums are... well, forums that are smaller.

Take the prefix "sub-", meaning "subdivision of " and add this to "forum". This makes subforum a "subdivision of a forum". In other words, they are sections of the forum and are smaller forums. (They're places to go and chat, roleplay or whatever the subforums are set up to be about.)

Here's a subforum that you should take note of: RPing threads (Created by Margem) - The President's Office is here. This is the Captain's subforum. She {I} governs this mini-forum. This is also where you will find the Warning Board and the President's Office [to see who's good and who's not; to comment directly to me].

WHAT ARE THREADS?
Threads are places where you can post something. The Merriam-Webster definition is: "a: something continuous or drawn out: as a: a line of reasoning or train of thought that connects the parts in a sequence (as of ideas or events)
b: a continuing element
c: a series of newsgroup messages following a single topic"
Definition of "thread".

In Alacrity, as with the rest of Gaia, a thread is a part of the forum in which you can chat or (as with Alacrity) role-play.

Let me explain making a thread and posting in threads to you!
1. Go to Margem's subforum.

2. See that the button near the top saying "Post Topic"? Margem does that in this subforum (don't actually make one here!). I will make a thread as I explain how to make a thread.

3. After the button is pushed, a thing comes up something like this (for the Captain, Vice Captain and the rest of the Crew members):
User Image
This is a picture of what I get whenever I push "post topic". This is not necessarily the same as what you might see - I have an extra option in my making of a thread (differentiating between Announcement, Sticky and Regular posts).

This is what you'd see if you are a Non-Crew member:
User Image

The difference? This:
User Image
It's a Crew thing....

4. The picture (above) has the basics of a thread. First, at the top, there is SUBJECT bar; this is where you put your topic [aka, what are you wanting to call your thread? what is your thread about? This thread, below, is going to be called "Garden in the Labyrinth Schwanereen"].
User Image
This is ONLY for the FIRST post of the thread! If you started this thread or if you are a Crew member, you can always come back to the first post and change the topic.

5. The part below that deals with the message of your post. I've already put text in my message area, so this is what it looks like. (The one without the post is above.)
User Image

Want to make sure that your thread looks correct? Click the Preview button on the bottom of the screen to see if it looks correct. Here's my Preview (with a nice looking Margem....):
User Image

6. Once you have the post ready (to post up as a new thread), click the "Submit" button. You'll now see something like this:
User Image

7. Now, once you get to the thread, you'll see that your thread is made. There you go! Here's a link to my thread: Garden in the Labyrinth Schwanereen

8. To be part of someone's thread, therefore, is similar to the process I just explained to you. However, you don't have to deal with numbers 2 through 4. You find the thread you want to post in and, after pushing the button "Post Reply" User Image, you see something like this:
User Image

Below the little bar are the posts from the last few posters. You can look at these to read what has happened in the thread (if you want to).

9. All you have to do to post is make a message in the box (like in Number 5). You can see my corrector right here, to make sure that I am spelling correctly [I have problems every so often, switching between Spanish and English]. You probably have spell check on your server/browser as well [a good tool whether or not you spell well].
User Image

10. You can preview your post, if you want to...
User Image

11. Click submit to see this:
User Image

12. You then are taken to your post, which comes at the bottom of the page (unless someone else has posted right after you).
User Image

Congrats! You now know how to make a thread and post in a thread! This works for chatting threads, opinion threads, Role-playing threads, grammar threads...... (etc. etc. etc. ......)

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THREADS IN ALACRITY?

I'm not done with this post either...

WHAT IS A CAPTAIN?
According to Merriam-Webster, a captain is defined as "one who leads or supervises; a leader of a sports team or side". In this guild, there is one main leader: the captain. That role is kinda like the role of a team captain of soccer or of dance. This person decides what she decides is best for the guild - makes the tough calls.

Who might this person be?

Your beloved Margem!

What I have to do is keep the crew (who are leaders) in line and decide what is best for the guild, though it might be tough for me and for everyone else in the guild at the moment. This may have to deal with 'firing' a crew member, adding a new subforum or initiating a guild-wide party for Halloween.

Also, as owner of this guild, I have the right to keep this position.

WHAT IS A VICE CAPTAIN?
A vice captain, just like on sports teams, is an immediate helper to the captain. According to my lovely online dictionary, Merriam-Webster, a vice-anything is "one that takes the place of <vice-chancellor>". It's like the Vice President of the United States. If the President cannot step up to the challenge of making decisions or is assassinated, the Vice-President steps up to the job of decision-making or becomes the President.

In this guild, as of the 14th of October of 2008, we do not have a Vice Captain. I did have one but he was not active enough to help me around the guild.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/captain

WHAT IS A CREW MEMBER?
A crew member is someone who is lower than the Captain and the Vice-Captain but higher than the 'non-crew' members. M-W says a crew is: "a group of people associated together in a common activity or by common traits or interests"; "a company of people working on one job or under one foreman or operating a machine".

In this guild, the crew is a group of people grouped together to keep the guild running with the little tasks that the Captain and the Vice Captain give and/or permit. These tasks are not as rigorous as those of the Captain and Vice Captain but are more than those of the 'non-crew'.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/crew[2]

WHAT IS A NON-CREW MEMBER?
A non-crew member is simply a member ("one of the individuals composing a group") that is not a crew, a V. Captain, or a Captain. In other words, this is the 'layman' of the crew, having very few (if any) requirements in the guild.

WHAT ARE THE ROLES OF THE POSITIONS?
Aye! This one is a tough question, especially since my rules thread seems to be questionable. (That's why I wanted the Crew to help me edit it!)

Captain (Margem):

Vice Captain (--):

Crew (Dunkballz, Dr.Elfy, Drakonis Darkblade):

Non-Crew (everyone else!):

HOW DO I GET A HIGHER POSITION IN THE GUILD?

[I'm not done with this post!
Please go to To Clear Things Up - ~Voice Your Opinion~ to help me decide this! We need to pull together as a guild, if you would be so kind.]

WHAT IS ROLEPLAYING?
{Here's where the fun starts for Margem as she readies the post.....}

According to WM, "role" is:
"1 a (1): a character assigned or assumed

(2): a socially expected behavior pattern usually determined by an individual's status in a particular society b: a part played by an actor or singer",
Definition of Role.

According to WM, "playing" is (for the definition of role playing):
1 a (1): to engage in or occupy oneself with
(2): to engage in (an activity) as a game

c (1): to amount to by one's efforts (2): to perform or execute for amusement or to deceive or mock

2 a (1): to put on a performance of (a play)
(2): to act in the character or part of
(3): to act or perform in b: to perform or act the part of ",
Definition of Playing.

There are many forms of roleplaying. There is the ACT of roleplaying (actually RPing) but there is the ACTIVITY of RPing (like the event).

Consider Roleplaying as if you are in a play (Drako and Elfy can attest to this). You gain a character (role) and you have to act/play it out. If you're Romeo in "Romeo and Juliet", you can't act or dress like yourself - you have to be in costume and in character (or acting/walking/talking like Romeo). The fact that you are active in the play means that you are Roleplaying. However, you are also Roleplaying because you are acting as another character.

To roleplay (or role-play) in this guild, though, you are more or less writing a story about characters.
