Yes although it's not practical in a standard bigband.

When jazz first started in New Orleans they used a tuba as the bass, so logically it could work and create a fairly cool sound. Although I think would depend on the instrumentation of the group and the piece being played.

For a while in my jazz band we had a tuba player. it was great for the new orleans pieces we did as Theme and Variations has mentioned. i think the sound is great but still the bass bass is always good. smile

Of course, If there's no string bass, or bass guitar, then sure, it'd work.
I play bass clarinet in jazz band at school and in a few extra ensembles, and i love it... (but I guess there's always dolphy & karn?)

That's why there's bass trombone....
But if you don't want to take the time to learn slide positions, yes I think tuba should be in jazz band

Tuba + Jazz =Win
I think a tuba is great in a jazz band! I have only ever heard one jazz song with a tuba that I didn't like, and that's because the tuba was to obnoxious and loud. Bass is good too, jazz bands should have both if possible!

True, but my school doesn't let trombone players play Bass Trombone until they reach 9th grade. neutral They let trombone/Baritone players play Tuba in 7th or 8th grade.
