This has been the first couple of weeks that Awai Tenshi has been far away from that human poison. Personally, she thought she would be dead by day two. However, she has been hanging in there, actually killed something as well. The other day she caught her first fish. She was proud, but she wanted to take down something a bit larger. However, the fish was rather good to not catch the next day and the fact that it was rather easy. Having a nice serving of berries after the first too, it was better than that food those humans' where giving her.
The plains of the forest wasn't as dark as she thought. Yes, there some dark places around here, but she doesn't go into them unless she has to. There were also many sounds, but she has now adapted herself to the different sounds a bit. Wishing that she did this sooner, but she should be glad that she even made it this far at all. The breeze was rather warm as the day turn to the night, the sun hiding behind a few trees from the distances. Awai was up in a tree, rest for a bit for her next lesson.
Hunting at night.

Hunting at night. One of Mephistopheles favorite pasttimes. He rarely tried to bring down anything much larger than a squirrel or a seagull because he simply couldn't eat any more than that and didn't wish to be wasteful - waste was a human trait, judging by the large amounts of perfectly good things they disposed of on a daily basis. He knew palui were supposed to be omnivores, but he happened to prefer meat to plantlife. There was something very satisfying about the coppery tang of blood and the crunch of small bones between his teeth, not to mention the sensation of tearing flesh. He didn't like spitting out fur and feathers much, which was the only real downside to formerly-live prey, but it was acceptable. One could only eat so much fish, after all, and berries and nuts were boring.
He moved utterly soundlessly along the ground, his ears swiveling to pick up the slightest sound that might herald the arrival of either a predator or prey. He had it in his mind to return to the nest he had scouted a day or two ago, where the baby birds were too young to fly. It would be simple to stun or kill the parent sitting with them, and then he could return for the babies at his leisure, as they would be helpless. Of course, his leisure would have to be fairly soon, or else they would die of starvation, and he did not like to eat carrion. When he was younger he had gotten very ill after doing so, and even now remained reluctant to give it another chance.
He climbed the tree he had subtlely marked, revelling in the straining of he muscles as he dragged himself upward. He stopped on a branch mid-way up to rest and saw from that vantage point a white, fluffy form on the branch of a nearby tree. Driven by an irresistible impuse to upset others, he growled softly to alert the other palui to his presence.

Sitting quietly on the branch, Awai heard a soft growl, it was either at someone else or just to scare someone off. So she dare not move. Though the growl sounded someone familiar, it wasn't her problem. It seems like its every palui for itself in this forest. She looked up at the sky to see if it was dark yet. The sun still tried to linger, however to her it was still night. The cream blued eye palui stayed curled up on the branch. Until she smell a bunny or something coming by.
However, she smelt another palui. Once again, she was having a strange feeling about this one. Sniffing the air once more, the smell was familiar. A male. She did not move, just looked side to side. For all she knew, this palui might be behind her. But she could act dead on this branch if she just stay still. Smelling the air around her, smelling a bunny or two from some distances. Wondering if she should move or not.
But if she doesn't, she is letting her dinner hop away from her. However is behind could be hungry for her though. But why would a palui eat another palui? Most palui would usually eat plants or fish, sometimes even berries.. But not other palui, she looked down. Her food was just sitting there, she could probably just attack now but first, she needs to know who is behind her.

With a sinking feeling, Mephisto recognized the light-colored palui in the other tree and wished he could take his growl back. He did not want to have anything to do with that palui. He had met her once before, and the meeting had not gone as planned. He could almost forgive her for not being properly intimidated by him, though it was his nature to hold grudges, so she remained unforgiven for it. Besides, she had taken a swipe at him, clearly meaning to strike him. It didn't matter that she had not bared her claws to him when doing so, nor had her paw even connected. The point was that she had tried, and he was not inclined to forgive her for doing so.
Moving slowly, but with as much stealth as he could, Mephisto retreated closer to the trunk of his tree and began his ascent, moving toward the bird's nest he had planned to prey upon since the sun had began to set. It wasn't truly hunting, but it was easy and it would assuage his hunger. He had not eaten for some time, being reluctant to even venture outside of the wooded area, where humans rarely went, but where the game tended to be too large for him to take down or eat.

Awai's ears began to twitch around when she heard noises behind her. Who was it and what was the palui trying to do. She stopped looking down and looked behind her. Her eyes connected to Mephisto but not only that, he was trying to do something to a nest of small birds. Was he going to kill them? He would be that hungry to do that.. Or maybe he is, she creep to the edge of her branch and hopped to tree that Mephisto was. creeping behind where her was, she looked up, her head tilted to see what is going on.
She understands that he could be hungry and all.. But he could at least get some fish or a rabbit or something. Not helpless birds that can't even fly yet. Now that she's close to the trunk of the tree. She grabbed on the trunk, her claws sharper than ever now, began to climb her way up to a nearby branch, not trying to disturb him to much. But maybe she could talk his way out of it. Her eye was on both the rabbits and Mephisto. She wanted to point him to those fully grown and rather meaty rabbits instead of the birds. Maybe he would even thank her for it. She doubts he will but at least the chicks would be save.
She tried to figure out how to get his attention. She grabbed a berry that was next to her and hold it. She was kind of afraid to bother him. Maybe he doesn't even want a rabbit. She sighed and and through the berry anyway. Not at him though, at the trunk, most likely he would look back, or already know that she is there.

Mephisto's head jerked around when the berry hit the tree and he bared his teeth in a silent, particularly feral-looking snarl. His eyes were already narrowed into slits, but somehow he managed to alter that expression to convey a depth of fury which bordered on the unholy. His ears were flat back against his skull, giving his head an almost serpentine shape. Everything about him warned Awai to keep her distance. He was not going to issue her any congratulations on her (so-far) survival in the wild until after he had brought down his quarry. He listened carefully for sounds that might indicate the birds in the nest behind him were waking. None, yet, but he had a suspicion that wouldn't last too long if Awai remained. He growled very low in his throat, full of menace and warning: Do not cross me.
Then he turned his attention deliberately back to the nest of birds. He didn't know where the second parent was at the moment, but it would be best if he killed the one guarding the nest quickly, before it could summon its mate to harry Mephisto in his hunt. He only planned to take the one adult tonight. After that he would be sated and there would be no reason for the nestlings to die. They would still have their other parent to feed them and defend them, though there was, of course, some risk that a predator would come by when the lone parent was off gathering food or chasing off other predators, but that wasn't really any of Mephisto's concern. This was the real world. Things died.
He inched marginally closer, gauging the distance between his current position and his prey. He could certainly stun the adult bird from here. Stunned, the bird would put up no struggle and issue no warning to its mate. He could kill it and take it away to eat it. He seriously considered the idea of pushing Awai out of the tree if she tried to interfere with his hunting. With a lightning-fast paw, he struck the mother bird along the side of her head to no visible effect but for a slight slump in posture that indicated she wouldn't be waking anytime soon. Then he stalked closer and prepared to break her neck.

Awai wasn't scared by this low growl. It meant nothing to her. Before she could throw the next berry, He already had done something to the mother bird. But she wasn't sure what. She could either jump after him and tell him to stop or just sit where and watch. She wanted to help so there wouldn't have to be any killing, but she just watched. This is a good way how to learn. After moving a bit to see what he was doing, it looked like he was going to grab her.
However she looked closer, Not only that he was going to grab her, it looked like he was grabbing the mother bird by the neck. If he applies much pressure on the neck he could break it, causing the mother to die. She watched, quietly sitting there not making any movements what so ever. She had no right to actually disturb him anyway, not like she is any help to anyone in the first place.

Mephisto glanced over his shoulder to make sure Awai came no closer, or he might actually put thoughts into actions and give her a shove. However, as long as she stayed where she was he didn't care a whit. He batted the mother bird out of her nest and onto the branch with a practice flick of his paw and then took her neck between his teeth. With several decisive shakes back and forth he broke the bird's neck. Then it hung limply from his mouth, no longer more than a corpse. Food. In the morning its mate would wake and discover it was missing, and then assume the role of both parents.
Keeping a firm grip on his meal, Mephisto turned to Awai and looked at her expectantly, clearly asking, What do you want? He did not try to talk around his mouthful of feathers and fine bones, because that would have been pointless. He couldn't descend until she moved, anyway, since she was between him and the next branch down. So he waited for her to do something.

Awai was wrapped in her thoughts after Mephisto broke the neck of the mother bird. All he did was shake it until it breaks. Something different than what she was thinking. But why? She sighed and looking around, guessing that she was in the way for him to get down. She climbed her way down and looked to see if those rabbits where still around. Her paws where ready to distend. Now that he got his food, she was rather hungry herself and thought of catching these two from the beginning.
Creeping softly behind the rabbits, her eyes here almost closed, enough for her to see of course, her paws made no sound. And trying to put together of what she learned from Mephisto. Swiping across one of the rabbits face, knocking that one out and grabbed it by the time she did that. The other hopped off. She sighed and looked down. She felt as she didn't really accomplished anything. Applying much pressure on the rabbits neck and shaking it, the neck broke. As it sounded strange for her, as she did it for her first time.

Mephisto made his way down the tree, carrying his prey, but he stopped on the lowest branch to watch Awai make her kill, doing her the courtesy of staying out of her way as she had kept out of his. Perhaps she was learning more quickly than he had anticipated. It was the way of free palui not to get in each other's ways when hunting, a matter of manners, the only kind to which he adhered. They were not the foolish rules of humankind, but the sensible rules of the free palui.
He watched as she emulated his hunting methods, applying them to the rabbit with more success than he had anticipated. Ordinarily it took more strength to knock out a rabbit, or break its neck. There might be more to Awai than he had originally thought at their first encounter. Of course, both his experiences with her thus far had been limited and he was not going to make any judgments about her for the moment. She had already proven him mistaken once, though it had not been so long since their last meeting that there was any guarantee she had mastered the necessary survival techniques.
When she had finished he slid the rest of the way down the tree trunk and slunk away a short distance to partake of his meal, beginning the messy process of removing the bird's feathers.

Now that the terrible killing was down she looked at the fur. Not knowing how to rip it off. But if she doesn't take the fur off, what if someone comes in and snatch it away from her? She tried her best to remove some of the fur but that was all she could do. It was harder to take off the fur than she though. She just got down to eating, still wondering where that other rabbit was.
As she finished her rabbit, she blinked at the leftovers of the. All the meat was gone, however, what could she do with this fur? Maybe as something to rest on. But if she keeps it someone might think its food. Someone larger than her. She didn't look at Mephisto, it would be rude to stare at him while he eats. Picking up the rest of the rabbits body, she put it under some dead leaves. She wasn't sure to either walk away or just stay around, maybe her & Mephisto could have a short talk before its completely dark outside.

He finished, relishing the crunch of delicate bird bones and the sharp taste of blood over his tongue and on his chin. It was worth the irritation posed by the feathers for the joy of the kill. When he was done, his muzzle was covered with blood and bits of feather, and he looked quite savage as he looked up at Awai, similarly bloodied, but behaving strangely and covering her finished meal with leaves. Human tendancies, he thought and gave a little sneeze to dislodge the tiny feathers trying to make their way up his nostrils. The sneeze only held a little bit of disdain, though.
"You can eat the flesh, too," he advised, gruffly. "Just spit out the fur, or heave up a hairball later. It does no good to let it go to waste."
He had left little of his meal but feathers and bones. There was hardly a scrap of bloody meat remaining, clinging to tough, chewy tendons. Sometimes he would work on severing a tendon so that he could chew it all day, keeping himself from feeling hunger by convincing he stomach it was about to be fed, though he would never swallow a tendon. That posed a danger of getting tangled up inside him.

She looked at him while rubbing the blood of her nose. She didn't really want to eat the flesh, she ate all she could that she knew of. Maybe someone else would like the rest. But she was guessing that would be wasteful. And dragging the rest of it around to chew on wouldn't be safe either. She ate what she could and coughed. Fur was stuck all around her mouth and somewhere in her throat. She rather save the rest of it than being choked up like this.
While she coughed up a fur ball, she rubbed her head. Thinking to herself that she would only stick to fish only unless she really wants rabbit that bad to eat some of its fur. The top of her nose was covered with fur, of course she didn't know. She felt something but didn't really worry about it. Turning to face Mephisto, a very small smile appeared on her face.
"Thank you for telling me that. I wasn't really sure if I was suppose to eat the rest or not." She said while wiggling her furry nose, finally sneezing.

With some reluctance Mephisto conceded, "You would have tried it eventually, if you got hungry enough. You didn't need me to tell you."
He waited, expecting that she would say more after a time. In the meantime, he licked the congealing blood from his chin and muzzle, enjoying the cold stickiness not quite as much as he enjoyed the hot wetness of it when it was gushing out of a warm or rapidly cooling body. Then he licked at his paws and cleaned his face absently.
"Of course," he continued after a moment's consideration, "Nothing really goes to waste here. Something else, hungry, will come along and eat it. Just take care it can't follow you, or it may eat you, too."

Awai looked away from him while he was cleaning his face. It wasn't really all that pleasant to watch him clean his face. All she did was stared at the sky as it turned into the night. She usually would stay up in the trees during the night but she couldn't just leave him like she did last time. Though last time she tried to slap him across the face, wasn't as successful as she thought.
"I see. Well then." She paused while getting up. " I guess I could have hid it somewhere for later.. Though someone would have gotten it before I could even get back." She said softly.
This conversation wasn't going as planned. Isn't he interested in anything at all instead of being a wild palui? Theres nothing wrong of being a wild palui or anything. But he barely has anything to talk about. Though, she does just likes to listen to the different sounds of the forest. For some reason, it soothes her.
