Yes, everyone. Field show season is coming once more! Everyone's getting their music memorized, their instruments all shiny, buying lyres (lulz, who the heckz would do feeld show wif LYARZ?). Oh, and there's a handful of freshmen coming from the junior high, itching and anticipating what adventures follow them in high school band and SOME OF THEM ARE JUST ABSOLUTE PAINZ IN THE a**! scream

The Anecdote to Which Most of You May Compare:

When I was volunteering as a leadership member at the junior high band camp two weeks ago, this freshman flute was thinking she was helping me by telling me how to play.

"Um, Miss Leadership Lady? *Snaps fingers* This is supposed to be played staccato, okay? *smiles really big and gives a thumbs up*"

The other freshmen flutes may have laughed at me, but

... I felt like killing HER.

Don't get me wrong, I of course WAS playing the piece correctly.

FYI, not only was I a Junior with four years of marching behind me. I also took music theory for the past SEVEN FREAKIN' YEARS, and was involved with piano performance for even longer, so how DARE she?

This particular b***h has a mother who spoils her as well. She bought her a piccolo she can't even play right. (My flute teacher, who was instructing at the camp, even said "... loud and obnoxious...")

This really surprised me. This little freshman girl had no formal flute instruction either.

Worst of all, she had the nerve to not practice her pieces during the entire camp, and so when concert-try-outs came around and she SUCKED and wasn't accepted, she brought her mother in with her the next day to complain... guess what? She got was she wanted.

Whoop-dee-diddly-doo. She fake-played the whole concert even.

That wasn't all, of course (besides telling our alumni first-flute veteran that she was a "b***h" and "should go to hell," and bossing around the sixth grade flute player like no tomorrow.)If I told the rest of what she did, even awesome band kids like you guys would show your a*****e-sides and say "tl;dr" scream

NO SPOONS FOR YOU! DISCUSS SIMILAR EVENTS!

Okay, I'm done.

A lot of freshmen are like that. I hate it a lot. They think they're awesome cause they're in high school now. It is freakeshly aggrivating.

I'm a freshman, but I do nothing like that. Some of the other one's are a different story. It got so annoying. We were out working our butts off learning drill while 3 or 4 freshmen feel "sick". They sat on the sideline and goofed around, throwing stuff at each other, telling jokes, etc etc. Whenever a director/staff/tech/officer walked by, they acted like they were miserable. So if our show sucks, we know who to blame.

Brats like that shouldn't be in band. Does your director not know how to say no?

In any case, I know how that goes. I'm a Junior in my marching band, and I've yet to see my freshmen yet. I fear them, though. I know one of the percussionists who can barely play triplets acts like he knows everything. But eventually, they'll simmer down.

And if not, fight fire with fire.

I'm a senior, and so use to having a small group. This year we have nine freshmen. Two of which are best friends, and never shut up. One that is always snappy. I put a stop to that real fast. I made her march with me during her lunch. evil She hated me after that. Then we have another freshie, whom thinks he is the sht. He tried to tell me i'm wrong. I turned towards him and told him he was wrong. Whatever is happening to all the god freshies?

Good freshmen are hard to find. My freshman year, I followed orders. I did what I was supposed to do. And I didn't complain.

Last year, we were unfortunate enough to find a bunch of bad freshmen. They didn't listen. Didn't practice their music. Skipped class (wtf?). Complained about the sun. Complained about how much marching hurts, after five minutes of doing it. The rest of us marched the whole three-hour practice without saying a word.

Good freshmen are hard to come across anymore. When you find them, take them under your wing and show 'em how it's done. Maybe the bad ones will get jealous and try better. =P

And normal freshmen last year were far worse... *shudders* Can't tell you how many fights involved a freshman and an upper classman. Freshmen never win fights against upper classmen. Upper classmen have lots of connections, and even if freshmen manage to beat them alone, they'll send someone for them later.. So even when the freshmen win they lose.

I feel your pain.
We have a few of those in our band. rolleyes
My spot in the drill is between 2 freshman. One of them's cool. She listens to instruction and does the right thing. However the other one always feels the need to say "Take smaller steps." Or maybe she decides to point out my approximate spot for newly learned drill while I count from the hashes and yard lines to be as accurate as possible. Then I have to start counting again because of her interruption. D<

There's also the sophomores, who may be worse than that freshie girl, but I won't even start on them. Too off-topic. razz

I'm a freshman, and I've been working REALLY hard not to be annoying like that. I'm listening to everyone who's helping me, and it's helping me out a lot. I'm really grateful to anyone who even takes the time to see how I'm doing.

The other freshman in my section...she's nice, but she doesn't listen very well. We're about at the same level in marching, but she's always talking when we're at standby and playing something. I like her, but...it's annoying.

Well, we should expect at least a few freshmen like that. Coming out of middle school, they have yet to realise that high school isn't going to accept any funny business from them. While in my experience in band I haven't exerience the want to kill, but there are a handful that are bound to get on my nerves. My only option is to endure it at frst. If they really are too much to handle, then you take the appropriate action yourself. Thankfully the freshmen in our band aren't that bad. They slowly mature and learn what high school band is all about. But if it's any of those stuck-up kids, then you gotta show them you're not going to take any crap from them. You gotta be strict and real with them.

I'm a freshman, and I really, really try hard not to be like that. I try to smile, (not when we're at attention, of course), be optimistic, and be a good person. I'm often described as 'The girl who is still positive after four hours of 8-5's, even though her claves really hurt.' I try to be at my best and listen to what other people have to say. Although sometimes it's hard not to fall asleep standing up.

When I was a freshman I was super lucky, there was a senior who sang and played piano, I guess in his junior year he decided on majoring in music, so he had to take up band and of course a marching instrument, and of course our BD puts him in my section, the baritones.

So in band terms it made him a "freshman" since it was his first year marching, but he acted like he was a senior, going out to talk with other seniors at football games, and other seniory stuff, plus he gave the directors and our techs a hard time and he couldn't play well, so it was easy for me, there was someone to compare me with, and I exceeded him (and most of my section) in marching and playing, so I got to be really good friends with the upperclassmen

The best time with the day before Championships, our BD tells all of the freshmen (and all battery) to go out in an arc to play the whole show, to prove we can hold our own, well at first the kid didn't come out, but then my section, and the tubas all forced him out

It made my day....

Oh I hate people like that.
Last year( my freshman year) This girl would always fake a broken leg. We went out of state to arizona and when we had a practice she said that she had a migrane and was watching us practice. The next day at our performace she was perfectly fine. I swear she had the crutch for a WHOLE FREAKING YEAR!! I'm so glad she left.

This year we have 2 girls in our section who are best friends and one of them has an attitude problem. And one time she missed our sectional for a freshman orientation and she had to marck sets for our show music. She drags her friend and it takes her like 30 mins to mark 5 things. So I go over there and ask her if she has any questions and she says that she's having trouble reading my friend (sophomore)'s writing. I'm like wtf and i backed away.
