Okay! This is kind of pissing me off as I'm going through the arena. People will post ANYTHING. It's driving me MAD. In my opinion, in order to have a good avatar, it must be eye-catching and for all the right reasons. Ugly people don't win beauty contests. Yes, they're looks are eye-catching, but for ALL THE WRONG REASONS! Wow... that's a good analogy. ANYWAYS!
This is my guide to having a good avatar, especially for the arena.
1. Pick a theme. It can be whatever you like. Angelic, Demonic, All Blue, All Monthly items, whatever. Just have ONE THEME and stick to it.
2. Find colors that work well together. Do NOT pair colors like poo brown with hot pink. It won't work. For emo or goth, try the traditional black and red or try black red and purple or black and purple. Red and purple might not send the same message.
3. DO NOT, under ANY circumstances think that random chaos is good. I can't tell you HOW many bad reviews I've seen tonight on utter chaos avatars.
4. Ask friends if you could borrow items that would work. All of you have IRL friends, I'm sure (cept Ronin maybe). Ask them if for even an hour they could let you borrow an item. Once you submit an avatar, you can't change it. USE IT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.
Use Tektek if possible for your "rough draft". It's got basically every item on here, and even ones you will most likely never own like Devil Tails.
5. Have a starting point. Have something the eye will be drawn to and so it can move elsewhere.
6. Balance it out! You don't want everything to all fall on the right side and have the left side stark and bare. that doesn't mean that you have to have identical sides. Just have focus points on each side.
7. Think about the background if you're gonna be in the arena. It's pure #FFFFFF white. If you're going to use the Winter Rose in petal form, PLEASE have something it can reflect off of. It will get lost in the background if you don't!
8. Take the time to put a description. Many times, you will have atleast a day, if not a few hours to think something up. If you've got a day or 2, think up a quick little poem or ask someone else to. There's plenty of help in the poetry guilds. You could think up SOMETHING. Even if it's like "Once upon the time, I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus!" if it's a "Santa" avatar and the Celebrity Date model kissing him. Someone could mistake it for "Santa and his hoes". It clearly labels it.
9. Don't copy a winner! You'll notice all the winners are DIFFERENT. They don't copy one-another. There may be some that are -similar- but none are exactly alike or carbon-copies.
10. If you have an idea and you know someone who has a vast collection of items, make a deal with them. You'll make the avatar in tektek and have them use it, splitting the winnings (if you win). Maybe even commission them for their time and effort.
11. If it's a cosplay or of a character, give a picture if possible. I saw one earlier that was Chihiro from Spirited away. I didn't realize it at first just looking at it. I had to read the title and description. It just looked like a cheaply dressed ava with a silver dragon, shadow spirit and rat. Had it had a picture of Chihiro with kohaku, the noh and the baby-turned-rat, it would have gotten a 10/10.
12. Ask for people to vote for you. Don't demand 10s. It's not really fair for someone with 500,000 friends that all give them 10/10 and win for a not-so-good ava when someone with 2 friends asks them to vote and they end up with a solid 8. You should rely on what the majority think to get a good consensus.
13. ALWAYS have ATLEAST one had having an object. It drives me MAD when I see an avatar with empty hands by their side. It loses all appeal and isn't up to it's full potential. There are hundreds of accessories on Gaia. There is no excuse for you to not fine atleast ONE that you could implement.
14. Think... spatial. In other words, don't be afraid to have bulky items. Generic
15. The sad but unfortunate truth. People will vote higher for shiny/expensive items. Kikis, devil tails, angelic staffs, demonic pitchforks, halos, scarves, 2k3 and 2k4 items, really anything over 100,000g would do. If it's possible to buy them or borrow them, try to.
I've not see a single winner that won without a monthly donation item (aka collectable) or that was worth less than 75,000g unless it was ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY Spot-on. Like, 100% without a doubt knew who it was and adored them like "Jamie The Mythbuster" (2005 Week 49 winners). That was more like... 30,000g.
If you have an awesome avatar or an idea for one, I'll gladly help you by lending you items or being your model and splitting the winnings as well as giving you credit in the "description" area.
Any comments?
