I have to go to this thing all week and it's like pre-band camp for when we go up to marching band camp next week, and today was my first day.
They taught us all of the drills and stuff today and at the end of practice we had a Drill Down. Basically what we did was the band director ("Doc") called out drills/commands that we had learned and whoever didn't mess up and was the last one standing won.
I'm just a Freshman, so I was like, "There's no way I'm going to win. I'll probably get out really quickly," so I decided to just do what I could.
I wasn't really paying attention to who was still left, I was just responding to the commands and doing what I could, like I said. It was weird because out of the corner of my eye I saw my brother's friend, Daniel, still in and pretty much everyone else was out. I was thinking There has to be someone behind me or something, so I just kept doing the drills. When Daniel got called out, everyone was cheering and Doc pointed at me and smiled.
I was really confused, but I couldn't stop laughing because I had won even when I didn't want or try to.
And the funny thing is, Daniel is a Junior, so he knew the commands waaay before, and I just learned them today!

Who else does has Drill Downs/March Offs in their band?

xD that sounds like fun. every year in summer band we have a competition between sections of who can march the 'box' the best.

I have to work hard with my flutes because they're all underclassmen except for me. o_e

and every section always mixes it up by making some people march different directions, etc.

Oh wow, that's kinda funny.
I would probably get really confused if we had to do that xD

I love them!!! They're the best part of band camp (well, second best, to getting to know your section). I won the freshman drill down my freshman year, but after that, I became drum major, and we don't really get drill downs, we just get to call commands (although I admit, it is fun coming up with new and interesting ways to trick all the band members. My favorite is to wait before calling "Hut!" at a really fast tempo...). I've only been in a few since my freshman year, all at Drum Major Academy, with a bunch of drum majors who are all older than me (I'm young for a drum major). My first year there, I lost all the march offs, but my second, I nearly won the first one. I was a really close second, to a college student, and it was just the two of us for about ten minutes. I got out on an oblique from a backwards march (by the way, I'd never done obliques before that march off) and the other girl went backward, which confused me. So I got out, even though she was technically wrong. Anyways, congrats on your drill down win!

Ha, march-offs are amazing.
Our drumline always wins though, along with a bari saxophonist.
Yeah, it makes no sense to me either.
Although they're sadistic about it.
At the beginning our director will be like "Band horns down!" "Band horns up!" "Band parade rest!" (Cannot go from horns up to parade rest) and then we turn. A lot.

Man...drill downs are my favorite thing about band camp. I won once in my sophomore year and I got third in the next one. (Stupid silent drill.) I think our band isn't going to be doing too many of them right now though.

we do that in our band camp. and they have the guard compete too. which is kinda hard cuz we've just been told what all the commands are and stuff...

That happened to me last year at this pot luck we had for the parents. xD
We have a drill down every year for it to show the parents what we've learned and this one guy always got first and the other year I got out like in the middle of it all.
I wasn't paying attention much either except for getting the commands the and the next thing I knew it was just me and my friend Randy left.
I ended up getting second because our drum major was like "rii-left hase," And I did a right D:
but I still got second and this nice little fireman badge since our theme was fire. :'D

We've got drill downs, and they are probably the most annoying, though oddly enjoyable, thing about marching band to me. This year our BD decided to allow us to try getting away with mistakes, since recovery is just as important as being able to march and play well. That made the drill downs even longer (and slightly less bearable). We just covered turning and marking time today and he decided it'd be fun to go "Mark time, hut" followed with several left-abouts which made me slightly dizzy even when I was already out. He also likes to set us to parade rest and give maybe 2 or 3 commands that we're not supposed to do, and people still get out on the 2nd or 3rd command.

They're interesting. Shows how well some of your fellow band members know how to listen, and how well they know what commands can be done at different positions. I usually win them, or come close.

We were having a march-off in a block a couple days ago, and my whole line got out all at once. xd We all were a little behind the yardline, but we all were in line with eachother. I think we should've been allowed to stay in. >_> xd

We had drill downs everyday at band camp. I always came in 2nd or 3rd everytime. The one time I came in 3rd I was trying to get out but I couldnt. This was my freshman year. I was against a senior only once.

Drill Downs are the bestttttt!
I haven't won one yet sadly but i was pretty close.
It's usually the drum majors or one of the seniors that always win.
I always screw up at the combos ex: forward march, backwards march backward left slide hut.

My band has what's called Preview Night, which is the friday after band camp is over where we show our parents what we've learned so far.
During this we have a march off every year. The tradition is that whoever wins gets the Golden Dinkles. I was doing my best and it ended up between me and one of my good friends that plays trumpet. We told each other good luck. By this time they were making us march with our eyes closed and when we marched the box it was horrible xd They couldn't make up their minds who was closer forever and we both just wanted it to be over. Eventually they just made us take 8 steps to the next yard line with our eyes closed. They told me I was closest and then I was mobbed by band members everywhere. I'm a senior and this was my last year to do anything so it was really cool.
So now I have the Golden Dinkles (in my siggy) that I have to bring to every competition so we can all touch them before we perform. (tradition/superstition thing).

Drill downs are so much fun! =]

We don't do commands like that in our band (we don't compete in parade or anything) so we didn't do a drill down this year.

However, I went to DMA this year, and they have drill downs every night. Those ones are crazy!
