Ok, so this isn't totally off topic, but I figure it's better off here than in the main forum.

When you take your dog to the vet and the tech draws blood, from the leg especially, what do you think goes through the dog's mind?
Do dogs know that they have blood and that's what you're taking from them?
Think about it, if you didn't know you had fluids rushing through you, would you freak out if someone suddenly stuck you with a needle and started drawing out this red liquid from your arm?

Better yet, what about subcutaneous fluids? For those who don't know, it involves sticking a needle into the dog's scruff and forcing fluids under the skin from an IV bag. Perfectly harmless and usually used for dehydration, but it leaves the dog with a big lump on their back for a few hours while it's absorbed. Do you think the dog thinks, "Oh my god! Am I going to have this huge lump forever??"

Or maybe I'm just crazy for even thinking about this.... xD

Dogs don't understand the concept since 'blood' is a human word and dogs don't see things the way we do. When they get their blood drawn, our moods are different and so is our energy. They are calm when we are so they sit there and let their blood be drawn because we aren't nervous but if we were, they would start to get nervous but they don't know why. Dogs are masters at reading the human body since they don't talk, they use smell first, hearing, and then sight to see things in the world. When we see a tree, that's what we call it. A dog sees a tree and smells it first then pees on it to mark it. They don't understand that it's a "tree" but something that has many smells on it. wink

Oh trust me, they aren't always calm! I have the scars to prove it...
This is just the sort of philosophical mind crap that my brain churns out while bored at work.
Moreso, I was wondering what that feeling would be like. Putting yourself in the dog's position. You don't know what they are doing/why they are doing it. It's gotta be one of the weirdest things in the world to a dog.... to not have the knowledge we have, yet to be put in that situation.

I think it's worse that some technicians are horrible at drawing blood! Then they yell at the dog for struggling after 5 different pokes....
It makes me wonder what people used to say to my dog before I started working at the clinic.
