This may sound harsh but, the way I see it, there's no point in "beating around the bush" you might as well just tell her straight up that her dog passed away. If you really think you shouldn't you could tell her that the dog went to sleep and will be asleep for a really long time. However I would just go with the first option.

Yeah, kids are smart. She'll understand. You should probably also tell her to talk to her parents about it, they're best for this kind of thing.

You'd be surprised at what a two year old can understand. I used to be in nursery in my ward, and once they're two, that is about when they really do start to grasp things like that. If I were in your position, based on what I personally believe in, I would tell the child that her dog has gone to live with God, and that Heavenly Father will take good care of him/her until she can go and see them again. Just keep it simple so she can understand the premise of what happened.

we finaly told her what happened and to my suprize it seens that she understood. i had no idea a child so small could deal with the loss and sadness. the truth be told i think i had a harder time dealing with the death sweatdrop i think it is a little to soon but they are looking for a new dog

Well, death doesn't really mean anything to kids until they're about four. Before then they can understand in their heads that someone is gone or is with God but the emotional impact of it isn't there yet.

kids really are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. I lost my friend when I was a kid and really that was when I started to understand the plan of salvation. Just don't present death as a bad thing and tell them about the gosple and everything's easier. It really is. Having the truth makes things easier for everyone.
