I'm having a bit of trouble with my tuba and was wondering if anyone here had some suggestions.
The First valve is sticking so bad I can't play. When you depress it, it sticks in the down postions and won't come back up. You have to fully unscrew the cap to pull it back up.
I've tried oiling it, but nothing works. A couple fellow brass players tried to help with no success. Anyone here got some ideas?

I may not be a Tuba player or a valve brass player, but try taking yiur Tuba to your local music center. Special Tuba specialists can fix your tuba, they may even find the problem and give advice. What kind of valve oil do you use? Like slide oil, theres only one that will work on your instrument. You should test them. smile
Hope I helped, HM

it sounds almost as if you have a dint in the valve somewhere...even a small one will cause it to stick horribly and not work. or perhaps you should try actually cleaning the inside of the valve and valve hole it may have some gunk in it that's causing the stick to happen. talk to a band director or music care specialist and see what they might think too.

Is the spring still in there? I only ask this because this problem happened to me and I found out the when I oiled the valves I dropped the spring out.

these both have been said but first you can try cleaning all the "gunk" out of it, or the spring may be missing.
i had a friend who lost his spring on th field and we had to find it at the next practice. it was pretty funny

You may have to buy some expensive oil,or just take it to a shop to get fixed.

Another tuba player told me that if things start sticking and oil doesn't work, fill a bathtub with lukewarm water and undo everything (valves, slides, horn). Leave it there for a half hour and then dry it out. I tried it on my sousaphone and it worked! It might work for tuba. Hope it helps ^.^

I got it fixed. We took the valve out, washed it, and took a brush to the inside, then re-oiled it.

Just talk to your instructor- he might need to send it in for repairs. the other 2 tuba players were having sousa troubles and both needed new valve parts. hey SoraStarChan- how did you get a bathtub big enough to fit a sousaphone in it?

Ok, so I had a problem like this with my 4th valve and i noticed that like the part that the button screws into...you know, the like stem lookin thing well i noticed it was screwed in wrong so that it was slanted and that was enough to cause the problem for me...but i had to take mine to the shop to get it fixed....hope i could help!
hey uhh XxVenomForFree, i saw your siggy and have to say this....its cool that you have eight sousaphones and all but beat this ours are actually silver METAL sousies and we have eight...which is better than you cuz everyone and their mother knows that a metal sousie sounds better than a fiberglass sousie.
