Okay, I'm atheist, yes. I wanted to get other's veiws on religion because, although I don't have a religion, I'm still interested in it. Personally, I think that God is almost like a fairytale. No offense. God is something that gives people hope, I understand that. But I don't believe in God and yet I still hope for things. God gives people restrictions and the greatest "reward" which is Heaven. What if there is no Heaven? Morals should be set because of yourself, not to please a God.
According to the bible, Non-believers and People who believe in more than one god will go to Hell. So does that mean that people should CHANGE their belifs just so they dont go to Hell? Or does that mean that Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, etc. will go to Hell? Isn't God supposed to be all forgiving? This topic isn't supposed to offend. It is supposed to open a discussion about religion and what it means to you. I am very sorry if I've offended you in any way.

It Can't Be Helped...

Well, I just might have to be the first one to jump into this reduction.

Well, as I see it, there is a greater being. In my own knowledge it is god, but others may view him as another form, as he does to please who he can, when he can. Unfortunately, that is not where my faith ends.
In a side note to your statements, would it not make more sense if we all believed in the same god, just different forms?
God can be all things, so what stops him from changing his appearance to lead different nations? Maybe he sets forth a test to believe, not just in him, but a greater being that allows salvation and mercy if you live your life according to his rules. Maybe its all a hoax to let you know that opinions are the real belief, that if you belief in something whole heartedly, there is something to see in it to the very end if you stay true.

I'm an agnostic myself, essentially meaning I don't believe in God per se, but I'm open to the possibility that a higher power exists. I largely agree with Perofain in that God isn't restricted to one form, that it (I prefer not to give God a gender) changes depending on the culture that worships it. In fact, I don't think it's even restricted to a personification. The Chinese, for example, particularly the Taoists, don't believe in a being or creature called God. They believe in a driving force that both created and will eventually destroy the universe. That's putting it in simplistic terms, of course; it's much more complicated than that, but I don't think an extensive explanation is needed for my point, which is that if there is a higher power at work, it doesn't necessarily restrict itself to human, animal, or any other specific form.

So you want a God (that you say is nonexistent) forgive you and let you go to a heaven (you say does not exist) ? Thats pretty convenient, like live freely going crazy and when time comes IF tehre is a god he must forgive me and let me in, cause god forgives and if there is no God well 'ha ha i told you so'?

I dont know, maybe there is not God and no heaven, but im happy thinking there is, it makes me feel somehow safe, plus the idea of heaven as a reward is good to me, people are evil by nature and thats a fact, we ned to hold to soemthing, i dont care if youre good because you think god is watching, i just care if youre good, so believeing in something that is not hurting anybody wont kill me, and if it is making me a better person thats a plus.

I heard once that God is like a diamond sitting in the middle of the table. I can only see one facet of the diamond and the person sitting on the other side of the table can only see their side of the diamond. I call my side "God" and they call their side "Allah" or "Buddha" or whatever. We're just not big enough to see the whole thing at once. And the guy sitting under the table can't see it at all... I guess I thought that was as good an explanation as any.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 19, 2008 5:54 pm

Uh huh, then I suppose I'm the one sitting under the table.

I'm an Athiest myself. What really ticks me off is that those who believe often think they're better than those who don't.

We're blind, or we're doomed to hell, or we're silly. Shun the nonbelievers, etc. etc.

I prefer the metaphor that the diamond is life and its meaning and its creation and everything else, not just the higher power, because that's bull. If there isn't one, then over half the world is wrong, and we have to be open to that possibility. I'd prefer an all-encompassing diamond than one that might not exist. A diamond that's good for all life, except those who don't want it; the ones who... commit suicide and stuff are the ones under the table.

For no creatures under God are as we are...

If there is a god, as described in the old testament I believe there should soon again be a massive killing.

So if there isn't a massive killing soon I guess I'll stick with my non-belief.

...none so like him as ourselves.

The new testament isn't as much fun to read as the old.

So I don't know about it.

I think of God as love, even thou according to my religion God's probably sending me to hell rolleyes i dont believe that, and, like steph said, if it makes you do good, well why act all 'rebel' about it...that in my case, of course.

I dont really see why people ask for proof, that's pride, plus it's not like God's dying to get our approval, one believer more one believer less, they really feel the world revolves around them, all this to say:

If you believe and have faith well cool, but if you dont..well you dont, but dont go asking the world for proof... at least be a good atheist rolleyes

I'm gonna have to say I'm agnostic. I don't believe in any religion and I don't believe in the bible because I think it's a bunch of nonsense. I'm not gonna believe in some dude that lives in the clouds just because people tell me it's good and right and true.
I don't care if you believe in whatever religion. It could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how people use it.
BUT I hate it when people hate each other over beliefs. That's....the every opposite of the point D:
I DO believe there is a higher form of power.
And I believe in reincarnation. If I do a bad job in this life maybe I'll turn into a rock or something.

*sniffles* my religion wasnt on the poll. im wiccan! and i am polytheistic. i remember back when i was agnostic (not aethiest) so i didnt believe that there was one god. i had trouble trying to believe that one being was our creator and controled EVERYTHING!! so i basically found a religion that fit the ideas i already had.

im a christian and i think the best way to answer the question "if god is all forgiving, then why does he send people to hell?" is that it's like a gift, say you got a gift for your birthday and its sitting there all prettily wrapped up, but you dont open it. it cant do anything for you like that, you have to open it and accept it first.
