ok heres a question i have. every one goes on and on about how people are so stupid. this person cant spell, this person can think. even this person has no common sense.

now if you had to chose which would be more important? common sense? or book smarts? most people only have one or the other. there is the rare person that has both.

i personaly would chose common sense. ive seen what happens when some one has none. and it is scary. though most of those that ive seen that have non also have no social skills because they never leave their computer long enough to realize that there are real people out there.

me personaly i have common sense. im heavely dislexic, so i sucked at spelling.(if you havent noticed by now) i love to read but i do it slowly. people look at ,me and say wow what a stupid person.
yet when sat down with those same people that say im stupid and ask
them to make; say - anything with their hands, from clothing to leather worked goods to crafts ,painting, tatooing or other hands on things, they cant hold a candle to what i can do.
i can figure out a pattern fast and make the item quicker and with better finess then the one calling me stupid.( i know this as fact from thetests they give you in school)
yet because i still cant spell im the one called an idiot.
what i though was realy sad is my roommate is a very! smart person. bookwise. yet when she moved in she had no! idea how to use the toaster, waffle maker or griddle. she was afraid of the garbadge disposal( but thats ok so am i lol!) but heres a smart person totaly ignorant of common things. she says she wasnt sheltered yet she has no common experiances to have given her common sense. she had absolutly no social skills eaither. that was scary.( on a side note she is much better with people now and she just turned 23.)

common sense isn't common anymore. life experiance is a joke as well, when no one is interested in living life. they spend more time on the computer now, then talking to "real life" people.
this scares me....

so in my conclution to my ramblings. which doy ou thing is more important.?

I'd have to say common sense. It's more useful in almost all situations that a person might encounter. I also feel that common sense can help a person with gaining book smarts.
See thats the thing, in many cases you can learn 'book smarts', some will learn it faster than others, but I believe that with the proper amount of effort, anyone can gain it. Trust me, you don't have to be a geniuse to get a Ph.D., you just have to have the drive and desire.
On the other hand, common sense is usually something your born with or gain through experience in real world situations. Some times the consicences of not having common sense can be very bad.
I think I've got a bit of both, common sense and book smarts. Also a healthy dose of real world life experiences to round me out. Many people consider me a smart person, I'm good at developing solutions to problems and approaching things from different angles. Alas, I'm horrid at spelling though. Does being bad at spelling make some one stupid? No I don't think so. Not knowing that sticking a fork in a toaster thats plugged in is a bad idea could make you stupid or dead.

If I may say so myself, I have a generous dose of both. People regard me as intelligent because I often assist my friend with projects. My sense of humor helps too, witty jokes keep me on peoples good side.

Being bad at spelling does not mean one is stupid. However, having no common sense is just plain dumb. Life experience, as the name implies, accumulates through life.

Life experience can be gained in many ways, per say, I am more experienced with making friends of different religions (unlike my friend who by the way goes all, you're gonna go to hell for that.) than my friend.

Eventually, you will have to gain life experience in one way or another, but a person can choose whether or not they want to learn. If one chooses not to learn, they will not get smarter.

i think that life experience builds your common sense. So i think that life experience is the most important thing. With it you can talk to other people and build connections based on similar experiences.

book smarts are important though, since you can't really have a good understanding of where we are in the world today without knowing what's gone on in the past. You don't know if you're over-paying for something if you don't know your basic math skills, and so on.

really everything is a learned skill. even if it's using a toaster, or doing your laundry, all the way up to studying and how to write essays. you learn these things in different places through different people and it's those experiences that will build up your "common sense" and "book smarts".

I think common sense, because it can save a person a lot of trouble, and you can even manage to bumble through the other two with it - sometimes.

The way I understand common sense is not the way you describe it. I see common sense as knowing 'don't touch the fire, it's hot.' So, I'm not going to talk about that.

When it comes to 'life experience', I'm a big fan of it. I'm what I like to call a 'sensationalist', meaning I live to experience knew things. New tastes, smells, sights...I've burned myself to know what it feels like. I've also been out in the world, and I know how it works.

When it comes to book knowledge, I'm covered there. I'm an AP student who graduated top 10% in my class. So, in my opinion, both are necessary to get by. So is common sense, but that's default instinct that only the rare person does not have.

i personaly think that common sense is most important. most answers in life can be answered by it. book smarts are important yes. a must have in todays world.
but to have life experiance you muct life life. sitting at your computer or sitting in a cubical all day is not liveing life.
these days it seems the common sence is changing as what is "common"
is no longer what it was say even 5 years ago. much less 15 years ago.
the things the we thought of as common to us, the new generation has no clue about.
the difference of small town country kid vs city kids show the most in the difference of common sence. i use this only as an extream. the citty kid would make fun of the country kid for not knowing somehting as simple as the bus system.
and the country kid would make fun of the city kid for not know that the animal on the other side of the fence was accutaly a sheep. not a calf.

there are kids in the city that have never even been off the black top. never been camping or anyhting like that. were do the lines of common sense begin or end?
what defines common sense or book smarts? or even life experiance.
all i know is you gain them from sitting in frount of a computer and computing your life away. my little sister(shes 22) has no social skills at all because all she does is still and chat on the computer. when she talks to people in rl, they think shes stupid and rude because she speaks to people like she does those on the net. no tact, no sensativity, she see every one as "just words on a screen" they are real but not.
its damn near imposable to get her off the thing. and no amount of threatening her works.
she is a perfic example as to what our children are becomeing. shes lived with me for 4 years now and she has barely learned that you acctualy have to think before you speak. and she acctualy has rl friends now as well. shes made alot of progress but theres only so much i can do.
its this problem that has moved me to ask. whats more important.

Definitely the common sense is the most important. Life experience can help you to develop common sense, but some people certainly have more of it than others. I'm doing maths at college, and so a lot of my friends are very intelligent, but some have no common sense to speak of. I have a friend who when he started living away from home didn't know how to clean the bathroom, and one of his housemates basically can't cook. It's all very well being intelligent and being able to spell well and things, but unless you have some common sense, you're not going to get very far in life.

I would say common sense is more important. People don't really have to be book smart. You could be the the smartest person in the world, but if you don't have any common sense, then you are a social wreck, and you would be completely clueless to what you have to do.

Of the two, I would say common sense is by far the more important. I thankfully have both book smarts and common sense, though I hate to say it, sometimes I find that I don't use what common sense I have.

I knew a girl in school who exemplified this fairly well. She was extremely intelligent, had been skipped ahead 2 grades, taught herself several languages, and yet, if you put her in a room with people, she couldn't interact.
I can't remember any specific examples for her lack of common sense (it's been almost 10 years since I was in school, forgive me) but I do remember trying to help her with that and failing miserably.

I chose common sense, but only because it's the closest of the choices to what I believe is important; that is, inherent and inborn intelligence, manifested in understanding of the world and "how it works" (for lack of a better term), understanding of others (including feelings, thoughts, motivations, etc.), and capacity for abstract thought.

Although all of the listed forms of "smart" are important, I believe it to be difficult or impossible to attain these without first having some amount of inherent understanding and mental faculties.

What's life with out your experiences? Perhaps your experiences lie with you common sense and book smarts? its all relative to perception.
