This might not seem like an intelligent discussion, but I've been debating this with my boyfriend for the past month or so now and there's been alot of fun discussing this....
I think that they're all different words for the exact same thing, while my boyfriend believes that they're all different.
He thinks that a geek is someone who is overly passionate about a particular subject of no real importance. (comic book geeks (my boyfriend!), computer game geeks (me!), otakus and so on)
A nerd, he believes is slightly different, overly intelligent and lack the ability to be cool or laid back.
A dork is supposed to be someone who is socially awkward and takes interest in things most people don't think are cool anymore (or were never cool in the firstplace)
I actually think these are all valid points, but I strongly believe they are all just the same thing. Just like there's so many different words for cool, awesome, bitchin', far out, groovy, top, hip, rad......etc....
So what are your thoughts? Do you agree with me that they're just words with the same or similar meaning? Or do you believe that they are in fact completely different categories? Do you have more words to add to the list? Do you already have your own meaning for them? Inquiring minds want to know!

most of my friends were/are basically within those categories.
Anyway, those deffinitions work very well. I never had a good definition for dorks, depite knowing one when I see one, but I like that one.
But yes, they are all different, though many of them DO cross back and forth, as they (like my case) tend to be friends with fellow dorks/nerds/geeks.
Me, I never really gave a crap about popularity, and found these ppl to be MUCh more interesting than other groups.
I am a computer/otaku/comic geek and proud of it!!!!

Here here! I tend to use the term "geek" as mark of coolness among my friends. I class myself as a geek, not just for my love of computer games but because of geeky things I claim to be proud of....like knowing all the words to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air rap and singing the theme tune to Captain Planet.
I also get referred to as a dork or a saddo by my parents! xp

I agree with your definitions. I always had dorks and nerds as one step up from geeks on the widely accepted "popularity scale". I'm not saying it's right, but that's what I always thought. I think dork and nerd are more interchangeable than geek.

There's an OKCupid! personality test called "Nerd, Geek or Dork?", and it is very popular. In the test introduction, they give exactly the same information/distinction your boyfriend gave. Are you sure he just didn't see that there? Ask him. That test is like... in the top ten all time most popular OKCupid! quizzes, so it's not impossible that he saw it.

They're pretty much the same in that mostly they fall in the same categories and people get them mixed up... Nut there is a difference.
Nerds are those super smart people that know everything (seemingly).
Geeks are those who are obsessed with video games, technology, stuff like that.
And Dorks are people who just act dorky. Like, try to get you to laugh and stuff. Basically, they're the class clowns.

Symbolism of number One There's an OKCupid! personality test called "Nerd, Geek or Dork?", and it is very popular. In the test introduction, they give exactly the same information/distinction your boyfriend gave. Are you sure he just didn't see that there? Ask him. That test is like... in the top ten all time most popular OKCupid! quizzes, so it's not impossible that he saw it. Sounds cool, might have to take that one! But no he's never seen it, he very rarely on the internet and when he is....he's usually deciding which Green Lantern or Flash T-Shirt he should get..... stare This all started because we started watching The Big Bang Theory and because "geek", "nerd" and "dork" are mainly American terms, we were wondering what actual difference was or whether or not there even was a difference, because they're just interchangeable here. In High School we never had cliques as such. everyone just hung out with who they liked. I mainly hung out with my Choir Posse! xd Mainly talking about the newest episode of Friends or Buffy! I mainly get called a "saddo" by everyone, to which I usually reply "So I'm sad, leave me alone" I don't know exactly how a word to describe an emotion became a mark of "uncoolness" but there ya go! A dork is a whale's p***s? Cool! ((why did I just find that cool????)) OK, if we're going with technical definintions, then a geek is someone who used to bite the heads off chickens! xd Hehe! Thank you Kevin Smith! xp

geek i believe has two definitions. One is of course the who" chicken heads " thing (not saying i have, not saying i havn't......LOL) but the second definition , I believe, is somrthing along the lines of " a person who is knowledgable in technology" or something like that......
Of course, this doesnt really cover all that a geek is, but it is a start.
but basically, nerds are the "know it alls" who often times give WAY to much care to school. (teacher pets, unpopular straight A ppl, etc...)
geeks are into many of the following things: manga, anime, star wars/trek, computers, RP (WOW and such), magic cards(and other battle card games), D&D, comic books, physics, movie trivia, and science fiction. (more too, but this is my current list)
dorks are rather different from the other two, as they are not neccisarilly at the same level of intelegence as the other two. these ones are just all around oddballs. They may sometimes be class clowns, but not the popular ones and not on purpose.
nerd: sacrifice popularity for knowledge geek: sacrifice popularity for other subjects of their interest dorks: naturally unpopular.

Lord of the pumpkins if you want to get technicall about it a dork is a whale's p***s. but yeah, Dork, Nerd, geek, there all the same thing, I should Know I am one XP. lol, I was just going to point that out. I can't keep a straight face when I remember what my cousin used to call forks.... Anyway, I think the definitions you gave are pretty good, and well thought out as well, although I'd never really thought about making the distinction between the three. I fall into those categories as well.

I think they are similar so I think the meaning of those words commonly intersect within context. xD
