well...if the queen is white...that must represent edward...and the pawn in the back must mean Jacob...right?
so Edward must win over Jacob?
it is weird that this cover is more symbolic compared to the other books...that must mean that it's the last?

I don't know if we should read so much into this.
A ribbon was a ribbon and a tulip was a tulip, remember?

Alisox I don't know if we should read so much into this. A ribbon was a ribbon and a tulip was a tulip, remember? Only half right: the tulip was the tulip but the ribbon symbolized how Bella was ready to cut off basically all of her life for Edward except for her family (the single strand). I read it in an interview with Stephenie. She said she had a lot to do with the cover of Breaking Dawn, as well as the one for Eclipse, so there must be some symbolism.

Personally, I believe there is a lot of symbolism on the cover. First, is the white queen. White usually represents purity, cleanliness, and innocence. Queens in chess are the most powerful piece in the entire game. Basically, this could represent Bella (maybe as a newly turned vampire with powers?). Now, the red pawn in the background. It looks ominous doesn't it? Red could symbolize a passionate love for someone to an all out rage. Jacob comes first to mind for me. Also, the word pawn could suggest someone using Jacob's rage/love for Bella to do something irrational (maybe to save her from having Edward change her?). Or, maybe, Bella might have to save him from someone because of his irrational actions.

the tulip did have some symbolism, it looks like its bleeding or dipped in blood or somethin... im guessing that has to do with Bella's pain when Edward left. If you think about it all the covers have to do with Bella. I definatly think the Queen is Bella and maybe the pawn is not really someone, but Bella's fears? The apple was her giving herself, the tulip was her pain and the ribbon was her cutting off her life for Edward like Alisox said. They all really have to do with her emotions/feelings/actions... so.... i dont think that the pawn represents a person. It's also interesting how the pawn is red... because on every cover it kinda represents blood in a symbolic form or whatever... so yeah i dont think that the pawn is a person but maybe a part of Bella that she's trying to ignore or fight emtionally. Like maybe her bloodlust or her fears for maraige... or leaving her family.
yeah sry i rambled on so much lol

Everyone's take on the cover is really good. Either one could be true...it really depends on what angle the cover is taking: Bella vs. herself, Edward vs. Jacob, or principle vs. principle. I'm curious to see what it its, but unfortunately we will have to wait until the book actually comes out to tell...

i actually think all these theories are awesome. when i first saw it i was like OMG Edward vs. Jacob... btu reading all your theories i think all of them have a fact or two thrown into the real meaning, whatever it may be. but i think the white queen represents edward and bella together and strong and jacob is the red pawn in teh background. always there in love with bella unwilling to really let go. as in a jacob in pain, bleeding, hence the red color. but i ahvea very whole out of whack theory on this whole thing...so.

one theory i like is that the red pawn represents bella as a human, all red and warm and weak, etc.
then the white queen represents bella as a vampire - all hard, white and cold.
also, the pawn can sometimes become the queen in chess, hence bella's transformation.
also, the whole queen thing- it implys that bella will be reeeally powerful as a vampire- is it hinting towards volturi status?
