Akagi Rin belongs to the noble Akagi family. An esteemed house of master swordsmen. Trained in the Akagi sword arts, Rin is a competent sword wielder in her own right despite her blindness. Unwilling to let her disability be a hindrance, Rin has put her all into her studies as well as her work. Regardless, Rin disdains to kill and has vowed only to draw her blade when absolutely necessary much to the chagrin of her family; Her family feels that her prodigious talent is being wasted with her pacifistic nature.

Akagi Rin takes no joy in the slaying of hollows, unlike some of her peers. Instead only finding solace in the fact that hollows slain by a zanpakotu are purified and reintroduced to the soul cycle. In this, she is appalled by the Quincy methods that destroy the soul. She has come to believe through her practices that everyone deserves a second chance. This has come due in part from Rin's time reflecting on the nature of the soul. With her blindness, she has had not much else to do other than practice the blade and to contemplate existence; She, however, does have a garden that she tends to in the division headquarters.
