In these matters the only certainty was that nothing was certain.
And the matter on hand was Tai and his hunt. Well, it would've been a hunt if he could stay close enough to the darn prey beasts in the tall grass. But no - he was always stepping on a twig or something at the wrong time. A frustrated sigh escaped the canine's mouth as he debated with himself whether to continue on or just give up for the afternoon. It was blazing hot anyway with only a slight breeze once in a while; not to mention he wasn't feeling very ambitious today. He'd call it a day and hope to find luck elsewhere later.
The brown and white dog looked about him, looking for anything that would provide some form of shade until the sun began to set. Ah, there.
A lone Umbrella Thorn tree stood behind him, a pool of darkness beneath it. Panting just a little, Tai trotted towards the tree and sat, enjoying the temporary relief from the sun rays and heat. His fatigue and irritation died away as he smiled to himself.
"One of you will be my dinner tonight," Tai gazed at the herd before him. He released another sigh.

Quite content with himself, the large lion male headed for home. It had been a fairly long day of hunting, ending in a good meal for himself. His stomach was content and he was feeling rather good about his skills. No one hunted like Jethro. Okay, maybe he was just petting his self esteem, but he couldn’t help himself. It had been a boring day other than the kill and he had no one around to pet his ego for him.
So he had to take care of things himself.
It was hot though. He hated feeling hot. That damn mane of his just absorbed heat, his deep gray coat not exactly helping matters either. Indeed, it seemed as though his coat was made specifically to hinder his existence in a sun-soaked realm. Not great, really. But it wasn’t like he could change his fur. Getting used to it was the only thing he could do. Then again, he had grown up with his fur and still wasn’t any more settled with it than if he had just been given it yesterday.
He spied a tree not too far ahead of him, though also noted it wasn’t void of inhabitants. There seemed to be a dog resting there, but Jethro had no problem sharing a space so he ventured over nonetheless.
“Hello,” he offered to the smaller animal, “mind if I sit with you? I mean, not –with- you, really. Just… under this tree. It’s hot today, isn’t it?” He chuckled mildly, taking a seat near the other even though he had yet been given clearance for parking. Following the animal’s gaze, he looked out at the herd. “Ah, hunting, are you?”

Tai'ruka's gaze turned towards the gray lion, eyes widened momentarily in surprise. Most lions he'd met had been territorial of their land, chasing the dog off the chance they got. But this one, he didn't mind sitting with someone like him. Seeing no threat at the moment, the brown dog relaxed his muscles, nodding in agreement to the notion of heat.
He gave a lazy chuckle at the next statement, regarding hunting.
"Heh, luck's not with me today I'm afraid," he replied, shaking his head to and fro.
It was probably the heat, Tai thought, panting. He stretched his front paws before him and yawned. He hated to feel lethargic, being lazy was being uncharacteristic. Normally, the canine prowled the jungle, the grasslands, and roamed all over, but today. Today just made him feel completely tired.
Deciding it was best to put these thoughts out of his mind, he broke his gaze from the prey beasts and turned to the lion. He examined the thick, healthy coat of gray and other various dark colors. Quite the big lion he was.
"I go by Tai around here," he said. "And you?"

At the wild dog’s response Jethro heaved a sigh. “Ah, well, I’m sorry to hear it.” He decided then not to brag about his success in hunting. Just because he had managed to fill his belly with meat to spare didn’t mean he had to rub it in a stranger’s face.
This time.
Too bad he had left the remains more than an hour ago. Had it been a bit sooner, and indeed a great deal closer, he might have offered the rest of the meal to the dog as both because he wanted the male to have food and as a sign of friendship. But by now the carcass was being picked at by scavenger birds. Nothing really worth going back for.
“I’m Jethro,” he responded at the offering of the other’s name, almost missing it in his thoughts or the meal that had been abandoned, “it’s a pleasure to meet you, Tai. I don’t see many wild dogs around these parts.” Looking back to the animals grazing not too far away from them, Jethro was struck with an idea like a tree with a lightening bolt.
“You know, if you need some help, I’d be happy to try and take down one of those guys with you,” he volunteered. Wasn’t like he had anything better to do. And hunting was fun, no doubt about that. He would do it all day if food wasn’t in such short supply.
Prey beats needed to reproduce more often.

{OoC} Holy crap did it not go through?! D| -shoots self-
{BiC} Tai's ears perked up at the lion's offer, greatly considering the possibility of food in his stomach. But asking for such a favor was like having his pride crushed under a massive boulder. But what did he care? It was technically free food after all.
He made a face - a look of confusion and frustration as if arguing with himself - which he was. Free food with a broken pride or no food with his pride in tact. There had to be a better way than this. The brown dog stared out over the plains and then realized: he was thinking much too hard. Well, that was unusual.
"How about I join you in the hunt Jethro?" Tai asked, facing the lion once more. His muscles were beginning to itch now - the thought of hunting successfully did that to him.

Watching the inner turmoil of the wild dog was an oddly entertaining circumstance, Jethro found, though he would never say it out loud to the poor guy. It would be the same for him, were their situations switched. He didn’t like accepting help from others either, especially not males who were bigger than him. Maybe it was just a guy thing.
“That sounds like a plan to me,” he chuckled, “I think we’d have a much better shot at things with the two of us. I’m a little slow from, well…. Eating.” He chuckled softly, shaking his head. No intention of bragging was in his tone, it was just him stating the truth; the male had a full belly.
It made him a bit more sluggish.
“I can follow your lead,” he offered quickly.

Tai found the lion to be oddly considerate for his species, but appreciated the suggestion without hesitation. He got off of his hind legs, tail wagging like a frantic pendulum. He lolled his tongue out, trying not to think of the heat as he felt quite confident in the imminent hunt.
It wasn't catching the prey beasts that was the problem: Tai was gifted with a sleek body built for speed - he could run almost as fast as a cheetah. It was not getting caught that was his downfall. He smiled at Jethro's last statement; so the lion understood the dog's torn emotions.
That was nice for a change.
"Alright then. How shall we do this?" He thought aloud. "Because I can't get close enough to them by sneaking up, how about I round up a couple and you can use your strength to catch one?" He thought the idea made sense to him, but he didn't know how Jethro would react.
Tai gazed at the prey beasts who were beginning to move away to graze elsewhere.

“I like that idea,” Jethro replied after a short moment of thought, “you bring them within range and I’ll try to take one down. Just don’t laugh at me if I end up with a mouth full of dirt for my efforts,” he chuckled lightly.
Confidence always had its drawbacks, he knew that. Too much of it always meant something going wrong in the end. And Jethro was a very confident solo hunter. He had never hunted with someone else before. Thus was the chance relatively high for something to go wrong. At least on his end.
His gaze shifted to the prey as well, his large body moving slow and he inched his way closer to them into a better position to catch one thrown his way. Skepticism over how well things would go still hung over him, but there was no point in dwelling.
Just go for it and see what happens.
Once he was ready to go, he waited for his smaller companion to get in on the action.

Once ready, Tai glanced at Jethro before speeding off in the general direction of the herd. He didn't plan on making noise just yet - not until he got closer to them. Like a bolt of lightning, the brown dog blended in with the savanna grass long enough to remain hidden here and there. Once the first few were in sight, he began to bark, herding a few of the confused prey beasts into a circle. He snarled and snapped viciously if any tried to fall out of the circle; such was the nature of a hunting dog.
"A'ight! Go!" Tai sped around the four animals, studying them each round. "Three adults, one calf. Take your pick! But hurry!" He could only hope that the lion would hear him.

Jethro was rather impressed by the wild dog's speed. He hadn't expected such a burst from something so much smaller than him. It was quite awe-inspiring. He had no time to watch, of course, there was work to be done.
Though confidence was indeed a bad thing, he wasn't about to settle on going for a baby kill. The drive to do well pushed his large frame forward as he sprang into action, claws extended to create traction in the dirt as he made for one of the adults. They tried to scatter, but each time they moved to flee it seemed that something else was there, something that wasn't the blood-thirsty gray lion, ready to harm them.
Bewildered, they really had no choice but to be caught by Jethro.
He launched himself at one that had just turned to get away from Tai, long fangs latching directly into the animal's neck. While the other prey beasts squealed and jumped about in an utter panic, none of them had the mental capacity to try and help their now dying friend. The could but watch as the animal was brought down, kicking frantically before its energy seemed to fail and it went still. Jethro kept his fangs in the animal's neck like he had become fused with it, letting the blood run into his mouth. Only when he was convinced it was dead did he release the animal, snarling lowly at anything that came close to his catch.
With the exception of Tai, of course.

"Whoa, great kill!" Tai exclaimed as he trotted over, panting heavily.
It truly was. Tai could barely compare himself to the massive size of the hoofed animal and yet here was Jethro, bringing it down with visible ease. He was only glad that he wasn't the victim during this hunt. The wild dog sat down on the other side of the lion, studying the dead animal, looking for a place to begin.
But wait, where were his manners? Or what he had of manners...?
"Please, help yourself first," Tai nudged the animal to Jethro, wagging his tail furiously.
His stomach would soon be filled with warm flesh and just imagining it made his belly flutter. He stared momentarily at the calming herd which was moving at a much quicker pace. Tai enjoyed the feeling of being superior and boosting his ego once in a while. This was what he lived for - the thrill of it all and feeling good about it.

Grinning, embarrassed and proud all at the same time, Jethro took a few steps to the side of the kill, taking a seat to allow Tai access to the animal while he panted lightly. Such a bust of energy had left him a little hot and winded. The beasts that had been around had fled the moment Tai ceased circling them. There was nothing they could do for their buddy now anyway.
Getting out of their before they met the same fate was a tad more important. Once they were a ways away, they lingered about, too confused to know the best course of action.
“Oh, don’t worry about me,” Jethro replied, gracious for the offer regardless of how unneeded it was, “like I said before, I already had my meal for the day. So dig in! I’ll make sure no scavengers come around to pick at the meat before you’re done.” There was something oddly entertaining about swatting at buzzards.
That was fun.
Laughing lightly, he looked back at Tai. “Well, I must say I love hunting! I hope the meat is good.”

Nodding graciously, Tai bit into the animal's flesh, his teeth sinking into the thick meat and blood. Oh how nice it felt to feel food in his mouth once more. The canine tore off a flank and gulped it down eagerly without hesitating to chew. He figured it'd digest in his stomach later if it didn't give him somewhat of an upset stomach beforehand.
Hearing Jethro's comment about hunting, Tai shook his head jovially. "I'd enjoy hunting too if I had better luck with it," he grinned, leaning down to take another bite.
"I never did ask what a lion like you is doing out here on a day like this," Tai began. He hoped the lion didn't mind him asking. "Aren't you in a pride or anything?"

Jethro couldn’t help but laugh. Perhaps hunting was the kind of thing you would like only if you happened to be good at it. Like races or some other kind of contest. Most of the time they’re only fun if you manage to win at least a couple of times. But he didn’t think Tai was a horrible hunter. Probably just had a bit of bad luck every now and again, just as he had said. Far be it for Jethro to call Tai a liar.
“It is a bit of a challenging art. There’s too much chance in it. But I still find it fun, even when I don’t manage to catch anything. Although, admittedly I only find it fun in hindsight. When in the moment it’s a little more of a bitter emotion chewing on my stomach,” he chuckled lightly.
Lying down, he started to clean himself up a bit, stopping only when Tai presented him with something new to talk about. “Oh, well, no. I think I’m the kind of lions most prides would kick out, so I’m doing them all a favor and staying a rogue,” he laughed, “I rather enjoy the free time. What about you? Do you have anyone waiting on you?” He didn’t really know how it worked with wild dogs.

Tai tried to suppress a chuckle at Jethro's description of himself. He really didn't seem like the type to get himself in trouble with groups of lions. Then again, the wild dog knew that not all lions were as affable as Jethro was to him. But the free time appealed to Tai as much as it probably did to his feline companion. Still, he was a bit unsure.
"Have you ever tried joining a pride?" Tai inquired curiously. "I mean, I suppose it couldn't hurt to try." Or maybe it might. Who knew?
The canine thought about his own lifestyle momentarily. He tried to keep himself busy often times, or perhaps meet another animal to pass the time with - assuming that they weren't planning to be hostile later on. But he was alone and being social wasn't completely in Tai's nature.
"Nope. No one waiting on my end," he shook his head, a wide grin on his face. "Though I agree with you on the unlimited time to myself. I get to have fun, even it means starving at one point to do so." He quickly finished up the carcass, lapping up excess flesh around his mouth.
