Okay, so this week we just had section leader (leadership) tryouts. We had to play six scales two octaves and sight read. Last year we did a speech, an interview, and conducting the band class.
For all those who have section leaders or leadership in your band, what do you have to do?

Well here at the middle school I'm automatically section leader of trombones because there are 2 trombones- me and my second chair. My second chair doesn't know how to read music very well which sucks because he plays bass guitar too.

At our school...there isn't like any specific tests or exams...the BD and other instructors just looks at the person and their characteristics, behavior, playing ability, etc. from the years that they've been in band, and chooses who he thinks is the most capable, qualified, and deserving person. But of course, the former section leaders do get a say and get to recommend who they think is the best choice.

I'm guessing that you're referring to marching band section leader try-outs, so this really belongs in the Marching Discussion subforum.

We had to teach a person how to march, play two random scales, interview, and last march for our panal of judges. Not in that order... I made it; I am one of the two FRENCH HORN secton leaders...I am considering backing down though...and just being a normal marcher...

In our band, you just write a paragraph on why you want to be a section leader (so those who say they want to beat up the freshmen are taken out of the running). And of course, your reputation as a marcher and as a person will influence the band director's decision. During the season, they teach new freshmen, mark spots, and play off their section members.

Well, we don't have to play anything, as our band tries to emphasize that musical talent and seniority doesn't mean you're a "leader."
All the leadership positions first have to get five people to sign a petition saying that they support them going for the position that they choose. After they turn that in, they then have to fill out this questionnaire based on reading materials on leadership that they are given. We turn that in, and then we have interviews coming up.
Also, for the drum major applicants, you have to attend a conducting clinic and then conduct the opener of the field show for the top group the following week.

We write essays about our experience in the band, why we want it, and what we will bring to the position. At least this year. In the past its just been seniority and whoever the director thinks will do the best job.
I like it better this way because I get a chance to show I want it, and not get passed over because its only my 3rd year, even though I'm a senior and just as qualified as anyone else.

Previously there was a 3 day lecture that all trying out must attend. On the last day, there was a tryout where we must call out commands.
This year there was no command tryout. I wanted to be a sl. I lost. I am quite upset that I didn't get a chance to prove myself at an actual tryout. =(

This year we did something new, we had to write a paragraph (nothing fancy, just something that says something serious instead of "LOL WHO CARES")
aaand you have to check in with the director to talk about soem leadership stuff. We don't really have an audition for it, that's more for drum majors.
Those who make it go to a leadership camp in the summer and then teach the newcomers how to march and keep their section doing what they're supposed to and such. 3nodding

Proud flute section leader fer 2 years and countin'.
I'm the only returning section leader too - I feel so... responsible. eek
