My band director just announced today that he is making a FRESHMAN drum major for next year! A FRESHMAN!! This means he will most likely have the same person for 3 years, skipping over my class and the one above me. I just can't believe it! I mean I'm not angry for me, I wasn't even in the running because I'm newish (one semester). But I can't believe he would pass over some incredibly talented people for a freshman! A freshman for drum major? I can't believe it!

I am sorry. That is a little weird. I can understand it, though, especially if the freshman is talented and there are no promising drum majors in the higher levels. Really, I have nothing against freshmen becoming drum majors, considering that is kinda what I did. If they deserve it, there is nothing wrong.
I actually feel bad for that freshman. The looks and whispers I got will be nothing compared to what they'll get.

when i was in school, there weren't freshmen. they were still in "jr. high"...so the band was only 10-12 grades. but we had three drum majors. two in front, one in back. so i don't know what the big deal is. although we did always have a jr. and sr. as the fronts and another sr. in back.

In my school, the director usually chooses drum majors who are at least a junior, but sometimes, this year he is starting to accept sophomores. But...what I don't get is...who COULD a freshman be a drum major? I mean, he just got out of middle school probably. He wouldn't know how to do anything! They don't have middle school marching band where i'm from, so..I don't know how that's possible for a freshman to get the position. There's more to being a drum major than just standing up there keeping the beat. They have to be organized and help the band out a lot. It's a big thing to be a drum major at my school.

Eh, I've see nothing wrong with a freshman being a drum major. Perhaps they've just got a natural talent for marching band, or maybe they're middle school had a band. Unless you mean a freshman from this year being drum major, meaning you'll have a sophomore? Well, that's still fine.

We have a sophomore drum major, and next year we'll have 2 juniors. But our drum major (here at the middle school) should be the drum major at the high school her freshman year because she got 3rd place drum major at the Strawberry Festival out of every band, and 1st in our class. She's easy on the eyes too wink

Well he certainly must be very talented! Personally, there really isn't anything wrong with that. If the guy's got the abilities, then you should be able to welcome him as drum major. While you may be shocked from it, you have to wonder what that freshman's thinking. Perhaps he/she will be feeling mixed emotions of excitement and fear. If that's the case, try talking to them and get them comfortable.

If he's a freshman for 07-08, but a sophomore for the next season, there's not much wrong with it, especially if said freshman is a good marcher, conductor, leader, and musician.
Now, as for an incoming freshman...that'd be absurd.

Make the new drum major feel comfortable and welcome.

OK. I am a freshman and even I say that is totally wrong. In our band to be a drum major you have to have been in 3 complete seasons. (not counting the upcoming year) and you have to be in high school. I guess that would work if you joined in 7th grade, but anything before 8th grade dosn't really count...really though. It's not fair to all the people who had to wait till their older years to be drum major and the freshman probably isn't experienced. I feel sorry for you guys. Just...try your best to make them a good drum major cuz there's not really anything you can do...

I'm a freshman right now, and I made Drum Major at my band for the 08-09 season. Well, we have 3 "field conductors" this year and 1 band captain. When the season begins, I will be a sophmore. I also made section leader of flutes/clarinets. That's because all our clarinets suck and the good ones are switching instruments.

I may be a bit biased, but that could be do to the fact that I'm a freshman right now going for drum major for the 08-09 season.
However, I must emphasize the fact that musical talent and/or age =/= leadership. Your band director obviously must've seen something in the freshman in question. Just because someone is talented doesn't mean they can lead. It's kind of like how a person can be an amazing musician, but they can't tell someone how to play better.
I wasn't even considering trying out for drum major, but I was asked by my directors. (Despite people saying: "there's no WAY the band directors would ask a freshman to be a drum major.") This freshman will no doubt feel pressure from the band, and that's the LAST thing they need.

I believe that talent comes before age, grade, race or sex. If the person has great talent, then they deserve it.

All I gots to say is don't be a baby. If they were talented, theres no reason that they shouldn't have gotten it.
