is it a sin?
PostPosted: Thu Apr 24, 2008 8:38 pm

For me? Yes, I consider it sexual activity, which I believe in abstaining from before marriage and not doing with out my hubby (when I get one). But different people feel differently, obviously.

Yes, they do. Not to be overly critical, but since when does one's personal opinion constitute biblical principle?

I never claimed it WAS a biblical principle, actually.(though I imagine I COULD find some biblical backing, if I tried) I said FOR ME, I consider it sexual activity.

Can't we have differing opinions without attacking? redface

I consider it a sin. If gluttony can be a sin, I think this can be a sin. Masturbating is kind of like a pleasure-trip, completely sensuous. There's no point to it other than to please yourself.

1 Corinthians 6:12-20

12"Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13"Food for the stomach and the stomach for food"—but God will destroy them both. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh." 17But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

18Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. 19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Romans 13:13
Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.

2 Corinthians 12:21
I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved over many who have sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery in which they have indulged.

Galatians 5:19
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;

1 Peter 4:3
For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.

Interpret these as you will. However, the entire New Testament really gives off a consistent message about abstaining from things that only bring sensuous pleasure, like drinking too much, eating too much, sexual immorality, orgies, etc. I do not think that masturbation is far different than any of those things.

Of course, I do not speak as an outsider condemning all who partake in such a detestable activity. Masturbation is honestly my biggest struggle. It has done nothing for me except draw me away from God and harden my heart. I truly cannot understand how it could not be sinful. However, in the end, it is God's judgment, not mine.

However, as Paul said, even if it is permissible, whether that means by God or by man, it is not necessarily beneficial. Our bodies were made for God, not for sexual immorality.

For those of you who disagree, please understand that I am in no way trying to argue, I am simply stating my opinion as you may state yours. This is not a debate. It's a discussion. Please keep it as such. biggrin

Great examples! I agree, and to add to that:

Leviticus 19 - "Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy."
Hebrews 12:14 - "Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord."

James 1:21 - "Therefore, rid yourselves of everything impure and every expression of wickedness, and with a gentle spirit welcome the word planted in you that can save your souls."

Philippians 4:8 - "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is fair, whatever is pure, whatever is acceptable, whatever is commendable, if there is anything of excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy-keep thinking about these things."

In other words, don't meditate on porno mags and films/hentai/lolicon/shotacon/other things of a sexually perverted nature. Because even if these are just little things that are completely harmless, they do have a way of screwing with your mind.

Don't fill yourself with images and thoughts that you don't need, that are not good for you. People have a way of getting addicted to "harmless" little things such as these. Believe me, I know!

Garbage in = garbage out.

Proberbs 4:23 - "Guard your heart more than anything else"

Philippians 2:15b - "... that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe"
That verse is beautiful ^_^

There's also Matthew 5:27 which mentions that adultery and sexual immorality begins in the heart and in the mind. Not just the act, but even the thoughts can be sinful!

If you struggle with this, don't feel bad about it. Work on it and God will work with you. We are no one to judge one another, but we should be supporting each other the way Jesus would want.

I hope that helped a little. Remember, no one is perfect. But God's love and kindness is greater than any sin, great or small. His forgiveness surpasses all understanding and He is the one who makes us holy even when we feel unworthy or unfaithful. =)

Our body Is God's Temple. Whenever God gets mad at early Isrealites it's because they have brought sexuality into the temple.
