Koiyuki
I think this guild is one of, if not the best on Gaia, and I moderate there, so i know what I'm talking about. Why? You may ask? Well...

    biggrin We're intellectual
    ninja Perverted
    cool and nOOB free

Need I say more?

I'm sure some of you are thinking, "I wanna write like that, too!" crying Well today is your lucky day, 'cause I'm here to show you how its done, step by step.
I'm here to help you learn BBCode *the coding used in these here forums*

And make your words and thoughts come to life! And I'll also give you the ability to use fancy fonts colors and whatnot. A quick note before i begin:

If you'll notice, a lot of the instructions you see here will look like this:

[*insert instruction here*]I'm the man![/*insert instructions here]
*used in the bold(b)(/b), italics(i)(/i), underline (u)(/u)and code (code)(/code) tags

or this:

[*insert instructions here=""]Whats your problem, bud?[/*insert instructions here*]
*used in the Quote(quote)(/quote) tag

or this:

[*insert instructions here=*][*/insert instructions here]
*used in the Code(code)(/code)URL(url)(/url) and Image(img)(/img)(imgleft)(/imgleft)(imgright)(/imgright)(imgmap)(/imgmap) tags

If you understood all that, congratulations, you don't need me teachin' ya this.

If you could figure out that you could substitute these()(/) for these [][/] and just type in the words to get what you want, good job and good eye.

If you feel still feel lost and confused, don't worry, you're not alone, and I'll be here to show you the ropes. I'm also here to answer any questions you may have about my teachings.

Now then, if you'd be so kind as to follow me...

How to create bold, italic, strikethourgh and underlined text
BBCode includes tags to allow you to quickly change the basic style of your text and make your words have that much more impact. This can be done in the following ways:
To make a piece of text bold, enclose it in these formatting tags:

[b][/b]

Any words within these automattically becomes bold

[b]This is what it could look like typed out before posting,[/b]

And this the result

For underlining certain things these tags would be used:

[u][/u]

[u]This is what underlined words would look like before posting...[/u]

And this is afterwards

Strikethrough can be used in joking statements or in certain words in anothers quote you may wanna take out, or even substitute for another, Example:

Before posting
I think your a [strike]damn moron![/strike] friggin' genius!

After
I think you're a damn moron!friggin' genuis!

Italicized words work much the same way, and their tags look like this:

[i][/i]

[i]before posting...[/i]

After!

Note that each of these word affects is designed to bring attention to what your saying and are not meant to be used in every single word you write, so use as needed

How to change the text color or size
To alter the color or size of your text the following tags can be used. Keep in mind that how the output appears will depend on the viewers browser and system:
Changing the colour of text is achieved by wrapping it in . You can specify either a recognised color name (eg. red, blue, yellow, etc.) or the hexadecimal triplet alternative, eg. #FFFFFF, #000000. For example, to create red text you could use: the name or number in the instructions. either way, they come out the same.

[color=red]Hello![/color]

or

[color=#FF0000]Hello![/color]

they both give you Hello!

Changing the text size is achieved in a similar way using . This tag is dependent on the template you are using but the recommended format is a numerical value representing the text size in pixels, starting at 1 (so tiny you will not see it) through to 29 (very large). For example:

[size=9]SMALL[/size]

will generally be SMALL

whereas:

[size=24]HUGE![/size]

will be HUGE!

you can also combine forming tags*thatd be the things I'm showing you* to get someones attention. For example, you may write:

[size=18][color=red][b]You friggin' moron![/b][/color][/size]

this would output You friggin' moron!

I don't recommend you output lots of text that looks like this, though! *unless you feel like getting your point across wink * And you can also use this to put multiple colors in your post.

Of course
, these kinds of sentences take a little while to make, so only use when absolutely necessary.

And also, there are a lot more to choose from than the ones in the color list, so just use your imagination and let your creativity run free and experiment with all the different color names to see what suits you.

(in case you were wondering, the colors i used *in order* were

    Dodger Blue
    Dark Violet
    Teal
    Gold
    Sky Blue
    Pink
    Drak Orange
    Dark Green
    Midnight Blue
    Orange Red
    Royal Blue
    Crimson
    And my personal favorite, Silver
    *the two worded colors are typed together as one, if you want to use one of those, and they don't need to be capitalized, or any of that*

And also, if you want to use gradiant and rainbow text, visit this site
Does all your dirty work for you, and saves you from catchin' Carpal Tunnel tryin' to make that kind of text xd
Remember that it is up to you, to make sure that tags are closed the right way. For example, the following would be wrong:

[color=indigo][b][u]This is wrong[/b][/color][/u]

Quoting text in replies
There are two ways you can quote text: with a reference or without.
When you utilise the Quote function to reply to a post on the board you should notice that the post text is added to the message window enclosed in a quote block, which looks like this:

[quote][/quote]

This method allows you to quote with a reference to a person or whatever else you choose to put. For example, to quote a piece of text Mr. nOOb wrote, you would enter:

[quote="Mr. nOOb"]The text Mr. nOOb wrote would go here[/quote]

The resulting output will automatically add: Mr. nOOb wrote: before the actual text. Remember that you must include the quotation marks "" around the name you are quoting -- they ain't optional.
The second method allows you to blindly quote something(a quote with no name attached). To utilise this enclose the text in quote tags with no name.

Quote:
a nameless quote

Creating an Un-ordered and ordered list
BBCode supports two types of lists, unordered and ordered. They are essentially the same as their HTML equivalents. An unordered list ouputs each item in your list sequentially one after the other indenting each with a bullet character. To create an unordered list you use
[list][/list]
and define each item within the list using
  • . For example, to list reasons why you wouldn't and shouldn't be called a nOOb you could use:

    [list]
    [*]I'm considerate
    [*]Literate
    [*]And i don't use chatspeak
    [/list]

    This would generate the following list:

    • I'm considerate
    • Literate
    • And I don't use chatspeak

    for an ordered one, just add a 1 or a in the first list instruction

    [list=1]
    [*]I'm considerate
    [*]Literate
    [*]And i don't use chatspeak
    [/list]

    These would be the results

    [list=a]
    [*]I'm considerate
    [*]Literate
    [*]And i don't use chatspeak
    [/list]

    You can also substitute emoticons or any other pictures for the bullet points, if you're feeling creative.

    Linking to another site
    The first of these uses the tag; whatever you type after the = sign will cause the contents of that tag to act as a URL. For example, to link to Star Cross'd
    Destiny you could use:

    [url=http://www.starcrossd.net/]Read me![/url]

    If you add the bold and other tags before you put the URL, you can also color the text and give it different effects.

    Before...
    [url=http://www.starcrossd.net/][color=indigo][b]Read me![/b][/color] [/url]

    After

    Read me!

    if you feeling lazy, you can put the URL, like so

    www.megatokyo.com

    Just putting the URL links it automatically, and the same goes for E-mail addresses, so if you feel like getting some random e-mails, just put it right up (unless you have common sense)

    Adding an image.

    A simple act of the IMG boxes and adding the URL for the image.

    Before...
    [img]http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/Koiyuki/IPGBanner.jpg[/img]

    After
    User Image

    To link an image to a URL, add the url image to the IMG boxes

    Before...
    [url=http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/index.php?page_mode=4&guild_id=6544][img]http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/Koiyuki/IPGBanner.jpg[/img][/url]

    After

    User Image

    This also works in your sigs if you want to link it back to somewhere.

    An Image map works much the same way, expect that you'll have many links contained in one image. Unfortunately, I have no idea how the process works confused Ask someone that does make this stuff, like this guy. When do you get one(or make one yourself *points to link*), however, you use the Imagemap command to place one in your sig.

    This is what it looks like typed out
    [imgmap]and this is where the URL for it would go[/imgmap]

    And another thing, if you want a lot of things in your sig at once, get the URL for what you want, go to tinyurl.com and paste it there. Once you shrink it, paste in back in your sig. You'll be amazed at how much space you'll have in your sig for...other things... ninja

    It was mostly a good review for me. I don't use a lot of the BBC markup often, but it reminds me a lot of HTML.

    Yes, they're both relatively easy to get into once you know what you're doing. Now making it pretty, theres a whole 'nother story...

    I was wondering, though. There's a text color that actually transitions smoothly from one color to the other. Do you know about it?

    There is such, but i have no idea what it is. Next time i see it I'll have to quote it and see what it is. most likely a special command of the BBCode

    Good tutorial here, reminds me a lot of HTML so it's not really new, but BBC does have seemed to simplify itself here in Gaia. I was trying to figure out how they did the listing, without doing using the ul's and li's and what not. the asterick was key!

    so, nice job, i'm loving it ^_~
