So, what does everyone listen to? I'm not talking about genres, I'm talking about specific artists. I like to listen to The Beatles, Paul McCartney Solo, ABBA, Elton John, U2, and a long list of other artists.

No, they're actually not like M.C.R. I'm not really good at saying any genres since I don't listen to music by genre but... I would say Children of Bodom is melodic death metal. As for Dir en grey, they started out as a japanese visual kei band so their earlier music was some kind of pop/rock combination. Their new music, however, is more like metal/rock.

I suggest you try and listen to those bands' older songs at first. Not the oldest ones - they're not very good, after all, they were just beginning to play then so... yeah. But their newest music is also... pretty hard.
Even I was like "Omg what is this s***?!" when I listened to Dir en grey's newest album for the first time. The album is great, though, now that I've listened to it more, but... their older material is easier to get into. ^^ Or that's my opinion, everyone can't feel the same.
