That depends on what point in history you want to look into. There's Heian, Feudal, WWII, Heisei, Edo, not to mention the different sub-factions alive during that time, as well.

A People's History by Howard Zinn has a great chapter on Pearl Harbor and the nuclear bombings with ACURATE information on why things went down the way they did. That whole book is great. It talks about all the messed up things that have happened in American History and not just what the government wants people to know. I have seen video games and soldier interviews of the pilots who dropped the bombs and to this day they actually think that they were saving lives. It makes me sad that they were lied to.

I'm currently reading The Making of Modern Japan by Marius B. Jansen. It covers basically from the battle of Sekigahara (late 1500s) til basically 2002. It is a great source in reading about all the influences into modern Japan.

My ultimate goal would to be able to translate a book written in Japanese about Japanese history. I am a history nut, and that is why I bought a high school Japanese history book on things. Usually, the best sources on a country's history is written in that own country's language unless censorship is strong. If that's the case, it's still interesting how a country views oneself.
